The rise of the internet and social media, together with the explosion of mixed martial arts (MMA) as a major global sport, has meant that today’s fighters are under intense scrutiny not just in the cage, but at all times – 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

As such, some fighters have managed to ignite a storm with politically motivated remarks and motivations, while others have infamously gone as far as to rub shoulders with some of the world’s most powerful and influential leaders.

In this article, we’ll take a closer look at 10 MMA stars that have courted controversy and hit the headlines by stepping out of the Octagon and into the all-too-often murky waters of politics – for better or worse.

Tim Kennedy

Kennedy captured global media attention earlier this month when he became the willing participant in a demonstration about the controversial interrogation technique known as ‘Waterboarding.’

Kennedy, a special-forces soldier and ex-UFC contender, live-streamed himself being waterboarded off-and-on for 40 minutes in an attempt to prove that it was not a form of torture, and instead was simply just ‘uncomfortable’.

There was a political motive behind the demonstration though – to support Gina Haspel, who was coming under fire for having overseen ‘black-sites’ in which waterboarding had been used during the ‘War On Terror.’

“Right now, an amazing hero has been appointed to be director of the CIA and because of that, some of the things she has done are being attacked,” Kennedy wrote alongside the video feed.

If I can change one person’s mind about what torture is and what I would do to protect American freedom, I will do this for years.”

Best Fights To Make Following Bellator 200 & UFC Liverpool

Check out the best fights to make following Bellator 200 and UFC Liverpool:

The post Best Fights To Make Following Bellator 200 & UFC Liverpool appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

This weekend was full of action in the combat sports world from the UK, with Bellator 200 taking place Friday (May 26, 2018) from the SSE Arena in London, England and UFC Fight Night 130 taking place yesterday (May 27, 2018) from the Echo Arena in Liverpool, England.

Starting off with Bellator 200, the main event featured a middleweight title fight between Rafael Carvalho and Gegard Mousasi. Mousasi ended up dominating the fight and scoring a first-round finish to become the promotion’s new 185-pound champion.

In the co-main event, welterweight standout Michael “Venom” Page outclassed opponent David Rickels, as Rickels verbally submitted in the second round.

Moving on to UFC Fight Night 130, the main event played host to a highly-anticipated welterweight bout between Stephen Thompson and Liverpool native Darren Till. The fight, which was rather uneventful, may not have delivered in the eyes of many and Till ended up winning a somewhat controversial unanimous decision.

The co-main event saw veteran Neil Magny score a first-round TKO victory over late replacement Craig White.

With both events now in the rearview mirror, let’s take a look at some of the best fights to make moving forward:

Gegard Mousasi vs. Rory MacDonald

Former UFC welterweight title challenger and reigning Bellator welterweight champion MacDonald has previously expressed his interest in moving up in weight to challenge for another title.

Following his first-round victory on Friday, newly-minted middleweight champion Gegard Mousasi called out MacDonald in his post-fight interview. The “Red King” then took to Twitter to share his continued interest in the bout.

Ultimately, Mousasi and MacDonald are two of the best fighters in the world and without question two top fighters in their respective weight classes. Both appear to be in the prime of their respective careers and are interested in fighting each other.

A bout between the two would be one of the biggest Bellator could possibly put together and with neither champion having a clear challenger awaiting him, the timing makes sense too.

Book it.

Six Times Jon Jones Thought The Rules Just Didn’t Apply

It cost him millions of dollars, but Jon Jones did whatever he wanted to do:

The post Six Times Jon Jones Thought The Rules Just Didn’t Apply appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

Disgraced former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones has always done whatever he wants despite the rules in place – whether it’s using performance-enhancing drugs or breaking the law, “Bones” has proven time and time again that he believes the rules don’t apply to him.

And the resulting inability to compete simply a massive loss for mixed martial arts fans and the sport as a whole.

Perhaps it’s the fact that Jones is still the youngest ever UFC fighter to win a belt, or maybe it’s because he’s never truly been beaten throughout 24 professional MMA bouts. Whatever the reason, Jones clearly plays by his own rules despite the consequences.

We broke down the six times Jones thought the rules didn’t apply to him, and it wasn’t easy paring it down to six, either. Check them out.

6. Jon “Scarface” Jones

Who would have known that Jones was a fan of the ol’ booger sugar? Well, at this point it’s hardly a surprise, but at the time, Jones tested positive for cocaine metabolites, the young champion’s reputation was still relatively intact.

Throughout the early portion of his meteoric rise to the championship, Jones frequently professed his faith as a Christian and came across as a good role model for young fight fans.

But that made the revelation of Jones’ cocaine use all the more shocking. It just didn’t jive with the wholesome persona “Bones” had cultivated over the years. It was the beginning of a long, arduous downward spiral for Jones that continues to this very day.

Jones made his typical excuses when the news surfaced and went to rehab for an impactful one day, but the damage to his reputation had already been done.

10 UFC Fighters Who Quit On The Stool

These 10 UFC fighters decided to quit on the stool in between rounds:

The concept of quitting is a taboo subject in mixed martial arts.

But in the heat of the battle in the Octagon, even some of the toughest human beings on the planet can be brought to their physical and mental breaking point.

To prove it, in this article, we’ll tell the stories of 10 UFC fighters who came to the painful conclusion that they had no other option left but to cast the stigma aside and quit on their stool.

Chris Leben

Leben is one of the toughest fighters to have ever set foot in the Octagon, which made it all the most shocking when he waved the white flag following the first round of his fight with Uriah Hall at UFC 168 in late 2013.

The already bloodied Leben, who had a reputation for possessing a granite chin and having the ability to take ungodly amounts of punishment, was attempting to take the fight to Hall in the dying seconds of the opening round when he suddenly ate a lightning-quick right hook flush to the face that floored him with a few more shots connecting cleanly on the mat before the bell saved him.

Leben rose back to his feet like a zombie afterwards and staggered back to his corner dazed and confused, asking his corner if the fight had been stopped.

They assured him that wasn’t the case, but that fact didn’t seem to put his mind at ease.

”I’m done man, I’m done,” Leben suddenly said. “Stop it.”

It was a poignant moment to see such a battle-hardened warrior admit that he had nothing left, and even more so in hindsight given that it would later emerge that Leben really was done.

After all the wars he’d been in over the years, both inside and outside of the cage, ‘The Crippler’s’ memorable career came to an end that night.

Five Biggest Takeaways From UFC Chile

A lot happened during the UFC’s first-ever event in Chile…

The post Five Biggest Takeaways From UFC Chile appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

The UFC’s first-ever event in Chile ended up being better than initially advertised, as the relatively low-key card delivered in terms of excitement.

Contenders put on huge performances, prospects emerged to become contenders themselves, and the entire card featured a handful of brutal finishes. What more can you ask for from a free card on FOX Sports 1? Not much, but overall the event most likely didn’t drive the needle in terms of exposure.

Regardless, there were some great finishes and some great victories from many of the less heralded fighters on the card. Let’s take a look at the five biggest takeaways from the UFC’s first foray into Chile.

5. Vincente Luque Makes Huge Statement

Brazilian-American Vincente Luque scored another emphatic first-round knockout victory against Chad Laprise to open up the main card, sending the Chilean crowd into a frenzy.

Luque has somewhat quietly stayed under the radar at welterweight, despite the fact that the man is a known finisher who sports a 6-2 UFC record. Luque has a penchant for D’arce and anaconda chokes and knockout power in both hands, and seems destined to become a contender at this rate.

Luque’s first-round KO over Laprise was a big statement for The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) alum and he should be inching his way to a top 10 opponent with performances like this.

Luque vs. Mike Perry seems appropriate for both men.

MMA’s Top 10 Strangest Pre-Fight Rituals

These MMA stars have the strangest pre-fight rituals in the fight game:

When it comes to mentally preparing themselves to be locked inside the Octagon with another highly trained fighter, UFC stars have tried all kinds of weird and wonderful methods to get in the right frame of mind for the battle ahead.

In this article, we’ll look at 10 of the strangest pre-fight rituals adopted by MMA stars over the years; from those born out of superstition and habitual behavior, through to those undertaken just for the sheer hell of it!

Matt Lindland

Matt Lindland went to extreme lengths to try and gain an advantage over his opponents during both his wrestling and mixed martial arts career’s.

‘The Law’ would avoid showering in the week leading up to his fights in an attempt to repulse his opponents and make their lives misery whenever they got near to him in the cage.

Given that Lindland was an expert grappler who once won an Olympic wrestling silver medalist, that meant that a lot of fighters ended up being forced to get up close and personal with him over the years, whether they wanted to be or not.

Most competitors just grinned and bore it, silently suffering through the stench, but after earning a split decision victory over Lindland at WFA: King Of The Streets in 2006, Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson couldn’t resist calling out the wrestler over his hygiene, or lack thereof.

”Man, that was like fighting a big-ass smelly skunk,” Rampage declared in his post-fight interview. “Matt you need to take a shower man.”
