UFC commentator and popular podcaster Joe Rogan does not like the idea of MMA superstar Conor McGregor crossing over into boxing for a second time to face eight-division world champion, Manny Pacquiao.

McGregor who is currently on the brink of signing a contract to face off against Dustin Poirier on January 23 has previously revealed a fight with the Filipino boxing legend is on the table for 2021.

Speaking on the latest episode of the ‘JRE’ podcast, Rogan compared McGregor’s credentials to that of his potential opponent, he said.

“You’re talking about one of the greatest boxers of all time against a guy with one professional boxing match.”

Tony Hinchcliffe, the comedian guest on this episode of Rogan’s podcast, highlighted the early success McGregor enjoyed during his lone boxing bout – a tenth round TKO loss to Floyd Mayweather in 2017.

Rogan then suggested that Mayweather was allowing McGregor to tire himself out before going in for the kill as the fight progressed, he said.

“Let me tell you something. The reason it was close is because Mayweather let [McGregor] blow his wad.

“Mayweather had to figure out Conor’s timing,” Rogan added. “Conor is not a professional boxer. Because he’s not a professional boxer, he’s not as efficient, and he’s going to get tired easier.

“[Mayweather’s] style is take the minimum amount of damage, find your openings and then establish your game and dominant,” Rogan continued. “Conor is a freak. He’s an explosive guy. He’s so fast, and there’s no remedy for that, other than getting [him] tired. What Mayweather was doing was boxing with him, but preserving [energy]. [He was] being safe, realized that Conor can punch, but drag him into deep water. That’s what a guy like Mayweather will do.” (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)

Former dual weight UFC champion Conor McGregor has openly admitted his desire to rematch Dustin Poirier is driven by a need to prepare for his upcoming boxing bout with Filipino legend Manny Pacquiao.

McGregor and Poirier recently agreed to fight. It was initially for charity before the UFC intervened and made official offer to both men. The Irishman accepted his employers offer on the condition that the bout take place in 2020 presumably so he is free to face Pacquiao in the new year.

In a recent interview, Poirier told boxing icon Teddy Atlas that the reason McGregor wants to face him next is so that he can get some rounds with a southpaw, before facing arguably the best southpaw ever in ‘Pacman’.

“Going back to why I think he wants this fight, it’s because he’s angling to fight Pacquiao. That was in the news,” Poirier said on “THE FIGHT” with Teddy Atlas (via MMA Junkie). “So I don’t know if the UFC wants him to fight one more time before they allow him to fight Pacquiao or if he just wants to get one more this year before starting next year with the Pacquiao fight, but what better way to do it against another southpaw?

“I think that might be his mind set. He wants to fight another southpaw before he fights another southpaw. I don’t know what’s going on, but I think that’s what the alignment is.”

McGregor took to social media to confirm Poirier’s theory to be true, he wrote.

“Correct. Southpaw box style. Continue to sharpen my MMA skills with some tough competition, while leading into my Manny bout preparation. It’s not easy going between both sports and then coming back to the one sport again. Just want to keep sharp guys, that’s all. It’s only fair.”

Dustin Poirier believes there is an ulterior motive in Conor McGregor wanting to fight him next.

McGregor recently claimed to have accepted the UFC’s offer for a fight with Poirier, but laid out the condition that it take place before the end of the year as opposed to early next year.

As of now, there is no update on the fight as all we can do is wait. But as for why McGregor wants this particular fight, Poirier believes it’s to help him prepare for a potential boxing match with Manny Pacquiao.

McGregor had previously hinted he was fighting Pacquiao in a lucrative boxing match, though that was before talk of a Poirier fight came up. However, it’s also possible that he wants to fight Poirier simply because of what UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov recently stated.

“Khabib, the current champion, said that if Conor or Tony fights me and wins then he’ll give him another title shot, so that’s in his head too,” Poirier said. “I think that’s creating a perfect storm, and it’s coming together that he’s coming out in public and saying, ‘Hey, I want to fight Dustin Poirier this year.’”

Whether it happens or not remains to be seen. But one thing is for sure — Poirier will not go into a potential rematch with strong emotions like he did for their first meeting with McGregor which saw him lose via first-round knockout.

“I’m not going to go in there and fight with anger,” Poirier added. “I’m going in there and fighting with skills. My last few fights I just felt something different happening in the lead-up to the fight. It was less pressure. In a weird way I care less.

“I cared too much before. I cared too much, and that blinded me, and I got in the way of myself. I care, but not like I used to. It’s hard for the average person to understand, but it’s important for me to keep that mindset. I’m going to be all right. Whatever happens I’m going to be all right.”
