Former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm had a bad night at UFC 196, much like Conor McGregor did. ‘The Preacher’s Daughter’ faced Miesha Tate in the co-main event of the March 5 pay-per-view event, in an attempted first defense of the title she’d won so convincingly from Ronda Rousey at UFC 193 just three months prior. It wasn’t to be Holm’s night, at least in terms of the result, as she was choked unconscious by ‘Cupcake’ in round five, although she had arguably won every round leading up to the finish.

Her performance was never really in question, it was just that Tate’s plan worked to perfection, and there was really nothing Holm could do once that choke was locked in. There was talk of an immediate rematch, then the rumours switched to Ronda Rousey somehow leap frogging Holm in the running, but eventually Tate was paired with Amanda Nunes for UFC 200 in July.

So where does Conor McGregor come in to the conversation? Facing Nate Diaz in the UFC 196 headlining bout, ‘The Notorious’ was also finished, but perhaps in more dominant fashion than Holm was against Tate. The ‘hype train,’ as it was labelled by many, had come to a screeching halt, and the consensus opinion was that McGregor would head back down to featherweight to defend the title he’d won from Jose Aldo at UFC 194. This was not to be, as just weeks later the news broke that McGregor and Diaz would fight once again at welterweight, and also at UFC 200, serving as the main event.

So why has Conor McGregor received different treatment than Holly Holm, or pretty much anyone else in UFC history? UFC president Dana White recently said it’s because he always shows up to fight and never drops out injured, take that statement as you will.

Holly Holm sounds a little frustrated during a recent interview, and makes an interesting point about the Diaz vs. McGregor 2 booking…

UFC lightweight/welterweight contender Nate Diaz has become an icon in the mixed martial arts world. A combination of years toiling at the lower middle end of the promotion’s payscale, facing the top contenders, his ‘real’ style of trash talking and recent performances have seen his stock rise dramatically. He faced Conor McGregor in his most recent outing at UFC 196, and the ferocious trash talk shared between the two during their 11 day rivalry was some of the best in the sport’s history.

It was only Diaz that could back up his talk on March 5 though, as he outboxed and submitted ‘The Notorious’ in two rounds. The resulting payday and media attention is much deserved in this writer’s opinion, but many believed the rematch at UFC 200 is wholly unnecessary. Once again taking place at welterweight, the featherweight champion McGregor is still leaving destruction in his wake, even after losing, as the interim title goes on the line between Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar on the same night.

All this said, and with Diaz experiencing a new high in his mainstream popularity, the Stockton bad boy is still up to his old and rather hilarious tricks. Check out his recent troll of Donald Cerrone and Anthony Pettis on Instagram. The former lightweight champion ‘Showtime’ and current welterweight fighter ‘Cowboy’ have been doing some sparring together recently, much to the interest of many followers on social media and in the Jackson-Wink MMA gym. Nate Diaz is not impressed though:

Classic Nate Diaz right there!

Another victory over McGregor at their scheduled UFC 200 rematch would surely see Diaz in line for a title shot at either 170 or 155 pounds, and would likely cause ‘The Notorious’ to head back down at least one weight class. Until the time they collide again in July, we no doubt have a myriad of hilarious trash talk to look forward to.

UFC lightweight and occasional welterweight Nate Diaz is once again heavily rumoured to be facing Conor McGregor. The blood bath at UFC 196 will go down as one of the most amazing moments in MMA history, as Diaz stepped in on short notice to rain on both McGregor and the UFC’s parade. The fact that he was not surprised (motherf*ckers) in the post fight interview was just the icing on the cake for most hardcore fans.

Now, with UFC 200 floating on the horizon, Diaz is all over the media. His victory over ‘The Notorious’ on March 5 has finally seen the Stockton bad boy receiving some much deserved attention. Boy, is he using it well! His most recent interview started off entertaining, but literally span out of control towards the end, and Nate Diaz hijacked Chael Sonnen’s podcast. Check out the best quotes, with the full audio segment at the end of the article!

Nate Diaz

“I don’t know if that fights official yet, but if it is they want to do it at 170. If you lose to somebody and you go and change the circumstances, then it’s kinda weak. He wants to try and win under the same circumstances, like if I lost, I wouldn’t say well next time lose 10 pounds and I’ll beat you. That’s lame. I’m a lightweight, and they want me to go up a weight class at 170? OK, I don’t care, it’s whatever they want to do.”

“They slept on it, and they were like ‘we don’t need this guy (Nate Diaz) in this position. We need Conor back in there to get his momentum back.’ So now they are just trying to get me out of here as quickly as possible, that’s what I think. (As for the featherweights) Those guys like Frankie Edgar are in a shitty position, if that was me, and I was just skipping out on the weight class, I would just leave the belt behind. Fuck, poor guys, they just want to fight for a belt, that’s their goal.”

“The reality of it is, I think I can beat anybody in the UFC, from lightweight to heavyweight. But if you don’t you could get beat by anybody too. In fight week I’m thinking in the back of my head I might get fucked up or knocked out, but I’m also thinking about what I can do if it goes well. It went down the way I expected it to go down against Conor. Just the cardio factor itself is a martial art, he fucked up…

The UFC news scene burst back in to life yesterday after a brief lull in a non-event week, with multiple headline stories breaking within hours of each other. Still no news on the heavily rumoured UFC 200 main event, which has been reported by multiple sources as being targeted for a rematch between Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz. Instead we learned of Jon Jones being involved in yet another traffic violation fiasco, but also and much more noteworthy was the news that Cris Cyborg has finally joined the UFC.

She’s been paired with Leslie Smith in a 140-pound catchweight fight, and will debut at the next Brazil based pay-per-view card in UFC 198. After years of feuding with former bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey, it comes as a slight anti climax that she’s fighting outside 135 pounds, but still the future is bright for Cyborg, we hope.

UFC color commentator Joe Rogan released the latest snippet from his popular Youtube podcast today, and he addresses both Cyborg joining the UFC, and breaks down the first fight between McGregor and Diaz at UFC 196, as well as giving his opinion on the proposed rematch. The video of the interview is on page 2, enjoy:

“I don’t know if it’s been solidified, I believe Conor asked for it to take place at 170. I think he felt great at 170, he just had a bad game plan and his ground game got exposed. Yes, it’s two weight classes above his title, but it’s not like he’s fighting Demian Maia who’s been at 205 and 185 and he’s cutting down to 170, first of all they both weighed in at 168 or 169. Nate Diaz takes the fight on 11 days notice, with no training whatsoever. He posted pictures afterwards of drinking tequila and eating tacos. He’s just in such good shape that he could get away with it. He’s just a damn good fighter, at 155 in his last fight against Michael Johnson, he put in the best fight of his career (before the McGregor fight). Nate and Conor are basically the same size, Conor didn’t have to cut anything.”

“There’s not even 10 pounds difference, when they got in the octagon I guarantee they were…

There was a whole bunch of questions being asked in the lead up to UFC 196, as UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor prepared to take on Rafael dos Anjos, in an attempt to make UFC history. The lightweight belt was on the line, and the Irish superstar was all set to duke it out with his Brazilian rival, until the injury bug struck again. With ‘RDA’ out, Nate Diaz was drafted in and the welterweight main event was made official on just 11 days notice.

The consensus opinion was that Diaz would be out of shape, and essentially feature as the bitter half of a pay-per-view squash match. How wrong the consensus was, as the Stockton native battered and submitted McGregor in the second round of a thrilling affair. We asked the question before UFC 196, what happens if Nate Diaz beats Conor McGregor? The obvious answer was that ‘The Notorious’ would be sent packing back to featherweight, to finally defend his belt, once again we were very wrong.

diaz vs mcg2

Less than two weeks after their first fight had transpired was the shocking news that the two fierce rivals had agreed to fight again, this time at the milestone UFC 200 card. Again at 170 pounds, the announcement came as both confusing and frustrating to many hardcore fans of mixed martial arts and the UFC. With the featherweight division put on hold yet again, it was clear that the McGregor effect was still a massively controlling factor for the promotion. And yet again, we ask the question, what happens if Nate Diaz destroys Conor McGregor (again)?

Here’s our highly speculative outcomes:

A. McGregor 1

Back to featherweight

So the first and perhaps most obvious outcome of another loss to Nate Diaz would be that Conor McGregor would head back to the 145-pound division to defend his belt. The championship he won from Jose Aldo at UFC 194 is begging to be once again legitimized, but let’s not overlook how rarely it was defended back when ‘Scarface’ was on top. Of course with Aldo now a contender, and also Frankie Edgar screaming for a crack at the whip, it’s no wonder some fans are in disarray at the current booking of Diaz vs. McGregor 2.

To illustrate the point on how often Aldo defended the belt, this:

So things could be a lot worse, and McGregor has not pulled out of a UFC fight yet.

It’s the rematch nobody expected, but UFC 200 is looking like the place it’ll go down…

Well, who expected to see this bombshell dropped this week? Not even two weeks have passed since Nate Diaz dispatched Conor McGregor in the UFC 196 main event, and already the promotion is working to book the rematch at UFC 200. The Stockton bad boy Diaz submitted McGregor after a thrilling slugfest at the March 5 pay-per-view extravaganza, exposing the holes in the Irish boxer’s game both on the feet and on the canvas. McGregor, it seemed, had been temporarily debunked.

With the hype surrounding ‘The Notorious’ remaining steadfast due to the fight being at welterweight, it looked as though he was being sent back to featherweight to defend the title that had been put on hold by his quest for two belts. After Rafael dos Anjos was injured and removed from the UFC 196 card, the reason the fight with Diaz was at welterweight was because Nate refused to cut down to lightweight on just 11 days notice.

So a highly unnecessary yet entertaining bout was born at the floating weight of 170 pounds, and fair play to McGregor for taking the loss on the chin in the post fight stages. But then the news broke just last night that the UFC was looking to book the rematch at their next landmark PPV show, and at welterweight too. The news was met with confusion, anticipation, and outrage from various corners of the MMA community, as many believed and hoped that the featherweight title would once again become active.

We can think of five reasons that the UFC shoud have avoided Conor McGregor vs. Nate Diaz 2.
