Let’s face it – after an international press tour and still a month’s worth left of promoting to do, Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather have learned a lot about each other in a short amount of time.

Mayweather may have not known much if anything about McGregor leading into the creation of their crossover boxing match, but he sure knows about him now. McGregor, who is known for playing mind games with his opponents, has treated “Money” no differently.

Of course, it’s going to be difficult to get inside the 49-0 boxing legend’s head, as Mayweather has seen it all when it comes to trash talk and mind games in the world of boxing. But in addition to the countless who believe Mayweather will win their fight with no difficulty, there are several out there in combat sports who are whispering that it’s actually “The Notorious” who is inspiring a sliver of doubt in the 40-year-old Mayweather.

Lets take a look at the ways “Notorious” has Mayweather shook by focusing on the moments that gave the boxing great pause…

SHOWTIME Sports

5. McGregor Going After After Showtime Exec Steven Espinoza

Boxing is a sport of tradition and oftentimes respect, both of which McGregor has openly mocked since the beginning of the press tour.

When McGregor set his sights on Showtime executive Steven Espinoza, it might not have scared Mayweather outright, but must have given him pause.

If McGregor is crazy enough to literally bite and mock the hand that feeds, what else is he willing to do? Will he mock the rules that Mayweather has imposed and throw an elbow? Maybe a head kick?

The unpredictable and mercurial nature of the UFC’s biggest star is certainly a selling point here, but could lead to disastrous results if he decides to take it further during the match itself.

McGregor always appears unhinged while on stage, which could leave Mayweather wondering just what this crazy Irishman is capable of when the two finally throw down.

Ask any boxing expert, or indeed most MMA analysts for that matter, and they’ll say the same thing – Floyd Mayweather is going to soundly beat Conor McGregor on August 26th.

After all, it’s just common sense given that Mayweather is considered one of the best of all-time in his chosen sport – an untouchable boxing legend with a perfect 49-0 record.

Meanwhile, McGregor may have won both the UFC’s featherweight and lightweight titles in impressive fashion, but the fact remains that he’s never had a professional boxing match in his life.

That’s not to say McGregor can’t throw a punch – he’s proven time and time again that he can do so with devastating effect – but there’s a world of difference between someone like Mayweather, who has spent his entire lifetime focusing purely on pugelistic perfection, and the Irish sensation, who has split his time training many different aspects of fighting, both on the feet and on the floor.

So, the odds are firmly stacked against ‘The Notorious’, and rightly so, but anything can happen in a fight and it would be careless to write off his chances of pulling off an historic upset without having looked at the fight from every possible angle.

As such, in this article we’ll do just that and explore no less than 10 distinct advantages that McGregor should enjoy against Mayweather when they step into the ring in Las Vegas in just two months’ time.

Age

When Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather step into the ring on August 26th, there will be an 11-year age gap between them.

McGregor turns 29 on July 14th, putting him firmly in the prime of his career as he heads into the biggest fight of his career.

As for Mayweather, despite his youthful appearance, he’s now 40 years old, and that’s sure to raise a question about whether time is finally going to catch up with him in the ring.

‘Money’ has now been fighting professionally for 21 years, and even though he’s racked up 49 victories without defeat, wear and tear is inevitable.

That’s particularly apparent with his hands, which Mayweather’s former cutman Miguel Diaz once noted the boxer has “all the problems in the world,” with, having suffered multiple fractures throughout his career, including in his last fight with Andre Berto, and that only becomes more problematic as the years roll on.

Some, like legendary coach Freddie Roach, have also spotted signs of Mayweather deteriorating in other ways, telling Sky Sports in 2015 that, “I don’t think he moves like he used to. His legs aren’t what they were – that’s the first thing to go with a fighter.”

Two years later, issues like that are only going to have become more pronounced.

The trash talk continues…

Since late 2015, combat sports superstars Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather have been locking horns. During a brief period after McGregor’s first fight with Nate Diaz, a boxing match with Mayweather was apparently happening in September. Once McGregor beat Diaz in the rematch at UFC 202, it was off to lightweight in New York. The talk about a boxing match with ‘Money’ would cease, but only to reignite again after ‘The Notorious’ beat Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight strap.

Bad enough was the situation at featherweight that McGregor was stripped of the belt. Although he still claims to be the two-weight champion, McGregor’s reign at featherweight ended with no defenses registered. The back-and-forth with Mayweather would again prove popular in the media, but set the lightweight division at unease. Would McGregor now hold up another division by pursuing his pugilistic rivalry with Mayweather?

Social Media Rounds

More than anything, it appears the McGregor vs. Mayweather rivalry probably won’t go past a social media war. What’s disguised as a genuine rivalry is far more likely to do with followers and money. All that said, McGregor responded to Mayweather’s recent $10K reward video with the following Tweet:

WhiteMcGregorHappy

White Russian

With UFC president Dana White recently hinting at McGregor vs. Khabib in Russia, the Irishman’s immediate future is likely to take place in a UFC octagon. Undoubtedly the biggest draw in the promotion’s history, how far will McGregor’s stardom take him? With movie roles and many other lines of work available to him, the brash striker looks to have his employers by the horns.

Here’s Stockton’s own Nate Diaz to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a happy new year! Thanks for sticking with us at LowKick throughout 2016, and we look forward to another crazy year of MMA action in 2017!

Following his historic win in New York, Conor McGregor was once again caught up in a whirlwind of rumours. Taking out Eddie Alvarez in dominant fashion at UFC 205, McGregor finally put to bed a long-standing debate. Not retiring, but taking ten months hiatus, ‘The Notorious’ was soon stripped of the featherweight title. With his newly acquired lightweight championship still intact, McGregor’s link to boxing great Floyd Mayweather was rekindled.

After the first round of rumours that a McGregor vs. Mayweather boxing match was happening, many felt it was little more than a publicity stunt. This time around, the Irishman successfully obtained a boxing license in California. Mayweather’s team scoffed that even a corn dog could get a boxing license in Cali, claiming McGregor didn’t have the jewels to make this fight happen.

$10K Reward

Publicity stunt or not, things took an interesting twist over on Floyd Mayweather’s Instagram. ‘Money’ is legitimately offering $10,000 for the best caption on Conor McGregor’s loss to Nate Diaz. Mayweather trolled McGregor for tapping out to Diaz at UFC 196 with the following remix of that iconic moment:

CAPTION THIS! Best caption wins $10,000.00. The winner will be announced on Monday, Dec 19. Stay tuned ! #TMT

The Saga Continues

Aside from his own personal satisfaction, what reason would Floyd Mayweather have for paying an Instagram follower $10K for mocking Conor McGregor? Perhaps this is yet another ploy between the two combat sports stars to build up a storm in their down time.

Whether they will ever actually fight remains to be seen, but everybody is talking about it. Vegas bookies again released odds for this fantasy fight, with Floyd opening as a huge favourite over McGregor. The song and dance surrounding the fight was further amplified last week by Dana White. The UFC president said he had ‘no idea’ what McGregor was going to do next. Just months ago he said the UFC’s biggest star would never fight anywhere else while under contract.

Freddie Roach: Conor McGregor’s Girly Punches Didn’t Hurt Diaz

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor continued his assault on the stars of MMA this week. UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor continued his assault on the stars of MMA this week. Talking to the stage at the UFC 205 presser, McGregor’s performance was almost a carbon copy of the ‘Go Big’ conference. Blasting just about anybody and everybody, ‘The Notorious’ also found himself a new rival in Jeremy Stephens. Since their back-and-forth on stage this week, Stephens has gone on to blast McGregor as a ‘ginger crackhead,’ claiming the Irish star hid from him backstage following their spat.

As we know, it’s not just the stars of the UFC that ‘The Notorious’ rubs up the wrong way. After feuds with the stars of the WWE and pro boxing surfaced, it was clear that everyone wants a piece of the featherweight champion. The 145-pound division seems to be seething in McGregor’s absence, leading to interim champion Jose Aldo’s recent boil-over. Demanding a release from his UFC contract, Aldo cited McGregor’s three fights in different weight divisions as one of many reasons. To the case in point, multiple divisions in the world of boxing is commonplace, and one man who recently said he’d fight McGregor in the squared circle is Manny Pacquiao.

Manny Pacquiao

McGregor vs. Pacquiao

Eight-division champion and modern boxing legend Manny Pacquiao recently said he’d be willing to fight Conor McGregor in a boxing match. Beef with Floyd Mayweather earlier this year lead to wild rumours of a fight with the Irish striker, and ‘Pac Man’ seemed open to join the trend. Discussing McGregor’s most recent fight with Nate Diaz at UFC 202, Pacquiao’s coach Freddy Roach says he wasn’t impressed. Here’s the famed boxing trainer’s comments to ES News:

“At least [he needs three years to get ready for a boxing fight]. He punched like a girl. I mean that’s why the other guy couldn’t get – he couldn’t hurt the other guy. Well, he did knock him down three times. Diaz is usually a bit tougher than that.”

Punches Like a Girl?

Acknowledging that MMA and boxing are two very different sports is a fair assessment. Even in terms of the striking, boxing specifically in MMA, it’s a whole different ball game. Did McGregor punch like a girl? You’d have to ask Nate Diaz. Roach continues, putting a damper on fans’ hopes of seeing McGregor in a boxing match with Pacquiao:

“MMA and boxing do not mix. What rules are they going to fight under? Whatever rules they fight under, that’s whose going to win the fight. I mean he’s (McGregor) not a boxer, he’s (Pacquiao) not a wrestler. It’s fucking two separate sports.”

Next!

Conor McGregor has a fierce striker to train for in Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205. We know the lightweight champion does hit with great power, so both McGregor’s defense and offense will need to be sound. At stake is promotional history both n the form of the first event in New York, but also in having their biggest star hold two belts at once. As for that ‘left field’ announcement Dana White recently teased, is a trip to the boxing ring what McGregor now has in mind?

The UFC of 2016 is a far cry from the early days in a lot of ways. One massive alteration in terms of production is the much more aesthetically pleasing and slick appearance of events. Both for the fans at home and those watching live in the arena, the promotion as a whole has become a well oiled machine, working like clockwork on the most part. For the past 20 years, UFC color commentator Joe Rogan has been on hand to see the promotion grow from a guilty sin to a legitimate mainstay in the sports world.

The likeable Rogan also reaches much further than the mixed martial arts world, with his own podcast and successful stand up shows, the 48 year old from New Jersey has his thumbs in many pies right now.

Rogan Goldberg

His partnership with the often clumsy and equally entertaining Mike Goldberg could not be scripted. Like something out of an 80’s US sitcom, Rogan and Goldberg make the perfect commentating pair, but with rumours of the UFC being up for sale rampant, there’s been a lot of talk about Joe Rogan calling it a day on commentating fights.

The larger than life Rogan discussed much during his recent interview with Rolling Stone Magazine, starting with the hot topic of the month; Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather:

joe rogan conor mcgregor

Do you think Conor vs. Floyd Mayweather could actually happen?
Um, I don’t think that it’s real. But, it could be. And it wouldn’t be a good fight for Conor. I can’t imagine a world where Floyd Mayweather doesn’t box as good as Conor.

Speaking of Mayweather – is it harder to go from MMA to boxing or boxing to MMA?
Boxing to MMA for sure, because there’s a far greater learning curve in the grappling, and there’s no grappling in boxing – but MMA does have boxing. MMA fighters have some knowledge of boxing, and some of them are much better at it than others. Like, there’s some guys that I think could go into boxing right now and be successful. Uriah Hall’s a perfect example. He’s got lightning-fast hands, he is a super athlete and his hand techniques are so sharp and clean. I think that he can go into boxing and actually do really well on a professional level. I think Anderson Silva in his prime probably could have done well as a professional boxer.

But, what do I think would happen if Roy Jones Jr. fought Conor in an MMA match? Conor would fuck him up…
