All these questions and more will be answered at 1:00 pm ET today during the UFC’s obligatory pre-fight press conference for Saturday night’s UFC 119: Mir vs. Cro Cop event in Indianapolis, Indiana.

During a media scrum ahead of his UFC 119 bout with Frank Mir, Mirko Cro Cop Filipovic was asked about his career, his future in MMA and whether or not chasing a title is in his plans.
When asked where he sees himself in the UFC’s heavyweight division, Cro Cop danced around the question like a politician.
"I see myself only Saturday night in front of Frank Mir. That’s where I can see myself so far."

Shortly after his heartbreaking loss to Anderson Silva via fifth-round submission, a dejected Chael Sonnen sat down at the post-fight press conference and made a simple proclamation to everyone who was eager to chalk the loss up to a lucky finish for the champ: “The better man always wins.”
At the time, it seemed like a magnanimous statement from the walking insult generator. Even though he won 22 minutes of the 23-minute fight, and even though he’d taken all four rounds on every judge’s scorecard, it didn’t matter in Sonnen’s eyes. Silva won, and that’s the only metric that matters when it comes to determining who the superior fighter is. So he said.
But as much as we hear about how anything can happen in MMA, how the four-ounce gloves are known to conjure a certain type of magic in the cage, aren’t there times when you just get lucky and win one you shouldn’t? Does the better man really always win?

Pat Barry could tell right away that he had a problem. He’d just floored his idol, Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic, for the second time in the first round of their UFC 115 bout with a beautiful right hand that landed flush on the Croatian’s skull, and he knew immediately that he’d broken his hand in the process.
“The world couldn’t see it because the camera wasn’t close enough to my face, but as soon as I broke my hand – that was the second punch I landed that knocked him down – as soon as it happened, my lip was starting to tremble, and for two reasons. One, it hurt terribly. And two, I honestly thought that was going to be the end of my career. I never would have guessed that it was only one broken bone. I felt like all the bones in my hand were, like, entirely disintegrated.”
The injured hand was a problem, Barry knew, but it wasn’t the end of the world. He’d come into the fight with a game plan that hinged on two main weapons: his right hand and his right foot. At least he still had one. At least he could still kick his way to a victory even if his hand was shattered.
You know how this story goes. It’s like that scene in a comedy movie where a beleaguered character remarks to himself that hey, at least it’s not raining. Cue the thunder and lightning, the sudden angry downpour. Or, in Barry’s case, the fractured foot.

Publicly, UFC fighters will always tell you that they don’t count on receiving an end of the night bonus check. Privately however, they’re looking at their counterparts on each fight card and calculating their chances of pocketing some extra cash.
UFC newcomer and Canadian MMA veteran Claude Patrick admitted as much in a post on the Underground Forum earlier today, where he wrote that he had sized up the lineup and concluded that the Submission of the Night bonus would likely be awarded either to himself or fellow submissions expert Mike Pyle.
Of course, that’s not how it went down, and the end result was both Patrick and Pyle going home somewhat disappointed after the UFC elected to award Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic the $85,000 bonus for Submission of the Night at UFC 115.

Sunday afternoon I was sitting at my desk, staring at my computer screen in the hopes that words would magically appear on their own, and my dog barked right behind me. It was a bit startling, so I swiveled around expecting to see either a burglar or a rabbit in the house, and that’s when I banged my knee against what turned out to be a really solid desk drawer.
I won’t lie: it hurt. It hurt a lot. Naturally, I began swearing. A lot. Then I limped around my office for a minute or two, wondering out loud what I’d ever done to my dog or the universe to deserve this.
That’s when I remembered Rich Franklin’s performance at UFC 115.
