Legendary heavyweights Fedor Emelianenko and Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic are now both competing under the Bellator banner, but according to “Cro Cop”, don’t expect a rematch between the two to take place:

“People are asking me all the time about that, but I don’t think about that right now. And I don’t think that fight will happen,” Filipovic said Thursday on a Bellator 200 conference call (transcribed by MMAFighting.com).

“It’s hard to say. There is no — I don’t have some special desire to fight him anymore, like I had before. Never say never, but I don’t think that fight will ever happen.”

The two first met in 2005 at a PRIDE event at the Saitama Super Arena in what, at the time, was the biggest heavyweight fight in MMA history. And in the end, Emelianenko ended up winning the bout via unanimous decision.

Now years later, both men have followed different paths, but both remain highly recognizable names in the sport.

“Cro Cop”, for example, has spent the majority of the last few years competing under the Rizin banner in Japan. Currently, he’s riding an eight-fight winning streak and will next rematch Roy Nelson in the main event of Bellator 200, which is set to take place on May 25 in London England.

Emelianenko, meanwhile, recently scored an impressive 48-second knockout over former UFC champion Frank Mir in the first round of the Bellator Heavyweight Grand Prix tournament.

As far as that fight goes, Filipovic seemed as if he was impressed by “The Last Emperor”, although he also said that the bout was far too short to take much away from it:

“Well, it was a good fight. If he’s back or not, I don’t know,” Filipovic said. “It was too short. The fight was too short, but good for him.”

Given where each fighter is in his respective career, it doesn’t sound too outlandish to think that a rematch could take place in Bellator, although it’s also unclear how much longer “Cro Cop” will stick around the fight game:

“It’s hard to say,” Filipovic said. “In this business, it’s hard to say. I said a few times already, ‘I’m done, I’m done,’ and at the end day, I always decided to extend my career.

“I will just do it as long as it makes me happy, and as long as my health allows me to keep fighting. So it can be one or two fights, it can be three, I don’t know.

“There are a lot of injuries in this sport, so you never know, especially at my age. I am 43, but I feel so good right now.”

Would you like to see Filipovic and Emelianenko run it back at some point in the near future?

The upcoming heavyweight slugfest between Roy Nelson and Mirko Cro Cop has just become even more important.

Bellator CEO Scott Coker has confirmed to the media at a press conference this week (transcript courtesy of Bloody Elbow) to promote Bellator 198 that the bout will serve as an alternate bout for the Bellator Heavyweight Grand Prix.

Cro Cop makes his way to Bellator in the midst of an eight-fight win streak. During that run, he holds wins over “King Mo” Lawal, Gabriel Gonzaga and Satoshi Ishii.

Nelson made his Bellator debut at Bellator 183 in September with a hard-fought victory over Javy Ayala.

He then suffered a decision loss to Matt Mitrione in his quarter-final bout. Thus, this could give Nelson another shot at getting back into the tournament and possible shot at the vacant heavyweight title.

“That will be for the first alternate spot. Whoever wins will be the alternate for the tournament in case somebody gets injured.”

If you recall, this marks the second time that they will fight each other as they fought back in the UFC in 2011 where Nelson won by TKO.

Bellator 200 is set to take place on Friday, May 25, 2018, from The SSE Arena, Wembley. The preliminary card will air online at 7:00 pm EST while the main card will air on Paramount Network at 9:00 PM EST.

The two fighters join a stacked card that already includes middleweight champion Rafael Carvalho (15-1) defending his crown against Gegard Mousasi (43-6-2) in the co-main event. London’s own Michael “Venom” Page (12-0) takes on David “The Caveman” Rickels (19-4, 2 NC).  Also, former titleholder Phil Davis (18-4) takes on Linton Vassell (18-6) in a light heavyweight matchup.

The matchmaking for this past weekend’s UFC 223 headliner had more twists and turns than a Hollywood blockbuster.

However, it’s far from the only time in the promotion’s history that the UFC’s matchmakers have been left scrambling at the last minute to find short-notice replacements.

In this article, we’ll look back at 10 classic examples of new opponents unexpectedly materializing out-of-the-blue in the final days before a big event to ensure that the show could still go on.

Fred Ettish vs. Johnny Rhodes

You have to dig deep into the history books to find out the shortest-notice fight ever in UFC history.

The night before UFC 2 in March of 1994, alternate fighter Fred Ettish was informed that he wouldn’t be fighting on the show, but he was invited to help out behind-the-scenes to make sure that the other fighters had everything they needed and were ready to fight on time.

On the night, Ettish was working backstage when one of the UFC’s head honchos Rorion Gracie urgently approached and asked if he could step in at the last minute to replace Freek Hamaker, who had just injured his hand during his opening round victory in the tournament.

Ettish estimates he had as little as 10-20 minutes to prepare, in which time he had to gather his gear, cornermen and do the briefest of warm-ups, before heading out to fight his opponent, Johnny Rhodes.

Unfortunately for Ettish, his bravery that night didn’t pay off as a disappointing performance against Rhodes led to a first-round submission loss, while he then cruelly became something of a laughing stock among MMA fans at the time, though these days he’s become more fondly remembered and respected.
