Today’s GIF party features a couple of animated highlights from the TUF 12 Finale‘s unaired prelims, as well as the Spike broadcast. First up, the night’s only knockout — Pablo Garza’s flying-knee-KO of Fredson Paixao, which came just 51 seconds into round one and scored Garza a $30,000 Knockout of the Night bonus. As if the KO wasn’t impressive enough, check out Steve Mazzagatti flying in from 15 feet away to tackle Garza before he makes Paixao’s concussion any worse than it needs to be.

After the jump: The "Pace choke," the McKenzitine, and the stunned expessions following Phan vs. Garcia.

Reminder: ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ Two-Hour Semi-Final Special Airs Tonight at 9 p.m.

TUF 12 The Ultimate Fighter Brookins Phan Watson Johnson

After taking a week off for the Thanksgiving holiday, The Ultimate Fighter is playing catchup tonight with a two-hour episode that kicks off at 9 p.m. The four remaining lightweight hopefuls will be whittled down to two, as Jonathan Brookins takes on Kyle Watson, and Nam Phan rumbles with Michael Johnson. There will be a lot of time to kill in between, so hopefully Georges St. Pierre brings another celebrity guest-coach into the mix. (Kanye?) Tune in, and be sure to read our recap tomorrow morning…

‘World’s Fastest Growing Sport’ — Fact or Hype?

I always figured that calling MMA "the world’s fastest-growing sport" was mainly a promotional slogan, based more on allegorical evidence than actual numbers. So is the title deserved, or is it hot air? Using data mined from the Simmons Research Database, MMAPayout.com has published a new report breaking down the growth of the UFC in the United States over the past three years, compared to other major sports leagues — as well as information on age and gender demographics. We recommend checking out the whole thing if you have time, but here are some highlights:

– The UFC actually is the fastest-growing sports league in the country, pretty much by default. From 2007-2009, the NFL, MLB, NBA, NASCAR, and MLS (that’s soccer, you guys) actually suffered losses in their fan bases. The NHL’s fan base grew very slightly. By comparison, the UFC increasing their total number of fans by about 14% (and 30% among "avid" fans) seems like a monumental achievement.

Welcome one and all to 3am A-Hole, where we yell at each other drunkenly after last call in a belligerent manner and misspell stuff.  Now, this was originally conceptualized as a streaming major live event on CagePotato, with exclusive interviews planned with Alistair Overeem  and Dana White all simultaneous-like. Unfortunately, since neither of them are responding to the messages we Facebooked them, those plans were scrapped. To be honest, we hadn’t figured out the streaming-interview technology anyway, but whatevs, brah. Shit would have been dope.

Anyways, with a firm deadline looming and no White-Overeem love fest to carry us,  we decided to go with a Comments of the Week edition. CagePotato posts what it claims to be Comments of the Week, but friends, they are lying to you. We’ve examined documents known as calendars, and we believe we can prove that these jokers are going weeks, sometimes months, between comment reviews. Well, Potato Nation, you can believe that 3am A-Hole is going to pick up the slack. We’ll pick out some comments from roughly the last week for extra appreciation; really good ones might show up on a Comments of the Month column. Hell, we may actually reward you in some material fashion, but don’t hold your breath. Now, you may ask: Why? Oh great Potato, why would you shower us with more attention and entertainment? Well, Nation, it’s because we love you. Also, you love talking about yourselves, and it keeps you occupied while we’re hammered.
