UFC strawweight Cynthia Calvillo tested positive for marijuana following her fight at UFC 219, and the fallout has been confusing and disheartening, according to Calvillo herself.

Calvillo holds a medical marijuana card in her home state of California, and competed at UFC 219, which was held in Las Vegas, Nevada, where medicinal marijuana is also legal. However, USADA forbids it regardless of legality or medical permission, which has naturally caused some confusion for fighters like Calvillo.

She discussed the failed test on Monday’s episode of The MMA Hour and revealed that she has lost a sponsor due to the fallout:

“I really didn’t think I was doing anything wrong. I’m not trying to be a rebel, just, I don’t know. It just really, really sucks that I’m in this position right now.”

“They say you have to be literally pretty super, super high in order to test positive the day of the fight. There’s no way in hell I smoked or took any cannabis the week of my fight at all. Let alone the day of my fight.”

“They tell us, like, they’re comfortable about how much time you would need to be cleared for in-competition testing. The last time I had consumed cannabis was on Christmas Eve, which was the week of the fight. I usually use it for sleeping, I use it for inflammation, I have had my medical card for over two years. It’s something I’ve used especially because I had an injury where I broke arm my three times in a row, and so I use it for the medical component and cannabis, CBD does help heal your bones. I was also having trouble sleeping for a long time [and it’s] better than using over-the counter stuff.”

Many athletes have praised the use of cannabis and CBD oil for recovery after grueling trainings and workouts. Nate Diaz even boldly vaped CBD oil at a post-fight press conference, so it’s use is at least somewhat prevelant amongst MMA fighters.

Calvillo was retroactively suspended for nine months from the December 30 fight date and was fined 15 percent of her fight purse following her loss to Carla Esparza at UFC 219.

Do you think Calvillo’s punishment is too harsh considering she has a medicinal marijuana card in her home state?

Nate Diaz’s fighting future is highly unclear at the moment.

The Stockton native hasn’t competed since dropping a majority decision loss to Conor McGregor at UFC 202 in August 2016, although he did imply earlier this year that his return was on the horizon. UFC President Dana White, however, has continued to say that Diaz has been turning down fights.

With that being said, it’s hard to know what to expect, but UFC commentator Jon Anik feels as if there’s a good chance that we’ll see Diaz in the Octagon sometime this year:

“I do think you’ll see Nate Diaz at least once here in 2018, and we’ll pray to the masses that it happens,” Anik told MMAjunkie.

As far as Nate’s brother Nick goes, Anik isn’t sure if we’ll see the elder Diaz brother make a return to fighting, but he is confident that fans will see Nate again. The commentator also said that he feels as if the younger Diaz brother can be a legitimate pay-per-view (PPV) draw on his own regardless of an opponent:

“I’m not sure we’re going to see Nick again, but I definitely think we are going to see Nate Diaz. I think it’s interesting when you talk about him as a pay-per-view draw. What do the internal metrics say about how much Nate Diaz moves that needle relative to his opponent (in his first two pay-per-view main events), Conor McGregor? … I think Nate Diaz can carry a pay-per-view and do 400,000-plus pay-per-view buys on his own. I really do. Even in a non-championship situation. I don’t know if my bosses agree, but I’d love to see him be afforded that opportunity.”

Aside from UFC 202, Diaz also headlined UFC 196 in March 2016 with both events landing amongst the UFC’s best selling pay-per-views of all-time.

Do you think Diaz would sell as well without McGregor standing across from him?

Rising UFC bantamweight Sean O’Malley picked up a hard-fought win over Andre Soukhamthath on the main card of last weekend’s (Sat., March 3, 2018) UFC 222 from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, but it didn’t come without a price.

Dominating Soukhamthath in the stand-up game for the better part of the first two rounds, “Sugar” appeared on his way to finishing the bout with a varied offense of pinpoint strikes.

But in the third round, O’Malley injured his leg throwing a kick and was unable to even stand, a fact that apparently went over Soukhamthath’s head as he inexplicably ground O’Malley and laid on him until the fight ended. Because of the glaring mistake, O’Malley won by unanimous decision and promptly gave a unique post-fight interview to Joe Rogan.

In it, O’Malley said the injury was nothing that a little ‘medicine’ at his after party couldn’t fix, and he may have been referencing the custom strain of marijuana that he discussed in the week leading up to UFC 222. Either way, O’Malley was far from shy about chronicling his own medicating, even with a cast on his leg, at his after party.

He released a video online via Fancy Combat enjoying some sizable marijuana cigarettes, some healthy snacks, and even a golden weed boxing glove not unlike the one once gifted to Nate Diaz.

Max Holloway Has Another Classic Troll For Conor McGregor

Max Holloway is back with another jab at absent UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor. Max Holloway is back with another jab at absent UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor.

Last week “The Notorious” posted on Instagram that he was definitely returning to MMA, and had even offered to replace Holloway and fight Frankie Edgar in the main event of this weekend’s (Sat., March 3, 2018) UFC 222 from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

However, the bout never materialized due to the UFC supposedly not having enough time to promote the event, and that left Edgar’s manager Ali Abdel-Aziz and coach Mark Henry blasting the claims in their own respective social media tirades.

Andel-Aziz claimed McGregor did truly offer to fight at UFC 222 but only if he could compete for a newly-created 165-pound belt, a division that has never been in the UFC.

Edgar soon revealed that McGregor’s post was the first he had heard about it, offering his own doubts that it was ever a realistic possibility considering he hadn’t heard from his employers about the potentially massive fight. But McGregor’s longtime training partner and friend Artem Lobov insisted that their camp was preparing to train and that the fight was “very, very close.”

“The Russian Hammer” reiterated that stance on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani on Monday, but the featherweight champ isn’t buying it whatsoever. After recently trolling McGregor with a photo of him being stopped by Floyd Mayweather after “The Notorious” had posted a photo of their 2013 match-up where he defeated a young Holloway, “Blessed” fired back with another comedic response.

Although he’s injured and unable to compete this weekend, Holloway blasted McGregor’s claims that he would fill in on the card by offering a laughable scenario where he would amputate his leg in order to fight 125-pound champion Demetrious ‘Mighty Mouse’ Johnson for a newly-created 115-pound belt:

Solid work from “Blessed,” who was many fans and media members’ pick for 2017’s “Fighter of the Year” after two impressive third-round stoppages of all-time great Jose Aldo.

He no doubt wants a rematch with McGregor, and with stinging social media barbs like this, he could have an outside shot at getting one.

Of course, the infamous Irishman will have to commit to returning first, and even though he appeared to do just that on social media, nothing is close to confirmed.

UFC 222, meanwhile, will go forward with a short-notice women’s featherweight title fight between Cris Cyborg and Yana Kunitskaya from Las Vegas this weekend.

Earlier this year, fan favorite Nate Diaz took to social media to not only call out fellow fighters, but to announce that he’d be making his return to competition sometime this spring.

UFC President Dana White, however, isn’t buying it, as he recently told TMZ that Diaz isn’t interested in fighting:

“We’ve been offering [Nate Diaz] fights. Guys don’t just come out and say ‘I want fights’ and then we don’t react on it,” White said. “We’ve been hitting him up since the last time he fought, offering him fights and he’s not interested in fighting. I don’t know why he’s saying it.”

Diaz shook up the mixed martial arts world in March 2016 when he scored a shocking second-round submission victory over Conor McGregor in the main event of UFC 196. The two then rematched at UFC 202 in August 2016 where McGregor rebounded by scoring a majority decision victory.

The Stockton native hasn’t fought since, and White admitted that he’s not sure what Diaz wants to do, although he assumes that he would be quite open to a trilogy bout with the Irishman:

“I don’t even know what fight he wants. Obviously, if Conor [McGregor] was available, he’d take that fight. It’s a big money fight for sure.”

In regards to McGregor, the “Notorious” one also hasn’t entered the Octagon in quite some time, having last competed in November 2016 when he knocked out Eddie Alvarez to become the UFC lightweight champion. More recently, he took on Floyd Mayweather in a boxing match last August, suffering a 10th-round defeat.

What do you make of White’s latest comments regarding Diaz?
