Conor McGregor and his team prepared extensively for their match-up against Floyd Mayweather last month, but in the end, the undefeated boxer reigned supreme with a 10th round TKO victory over the Irishman.

McGregor’s striking coach, Owen Roddy, recently joined The MMA Hour to discuss the match-up and what surprised them from it. Roddy explained that they weren’t expecting Mayweather to press forward and walk McGregor down – something they didn’t prepare for (quotes via MMA Fighting):

“I felt the game plan that we came up with and the strategy we had for the first four rounds was really good. Conor was doing well. It was a tight fight,” he said.

“Conor was landing shots that we worked and he was landing them often enough. In my opinion, when Mayweather switched it up and he kind of walked Conor down with the hands high and elbows in and just kept walking forward and let Conor throw shots at the arms – when we saw that we hadn’t prepared for it.”

Roddy claimed that they tried to switch up the game-plan on McGregor midway through the fight, telling him to throw less combinations and instead stick-and-move. Roddy expressed disappointment in himself for not being aware that Mayweather could’ve come out so aggressively:

“We tried to switch it up from rounds six or seven. We were telling Conor, ‘just keep popping one or two shots, don’t throw any more combinations – just keep it single shots, enter into the clinch and try to push him backwards.’

“I should have been aware of a game plan like that from Mayweather and that probably should’ve been done in camp. It’s hard to change things when you’re in the fight, so I’m a bit disappointed in myself that I didn’t predict that he would walk forward and let Conor catch him on the arms and walk him down,” Roddy said.

“I honestly thought (Mayweather) was going to pop shots, sit back, work the shoulder roll and Philly shell. He did play that game for the first couple of rounds. Conor was having success with all of that, but unfortunately I didn’t have the stuff in place for the walking down strategy. We’ve learned from that.”

Team McGregor was very pleased with the shots that they were able to land on Mayweather, but they just couldn’t get the one shot they needed to finish it off:

“I watched hundreds of hours of Floyd, and the thing about him is, he never really gets hit clean and he did get clipped a good few times in those first four rounds,” he said.

“He took the shots really well. When you’re fighting for so long and you’re not damaging your chin – and Floyd hasn’t damaged his chin – even when the shots do land clean you can take them well because your brain has not been damaged over a period of years.

“All the switches, the working the body, the lead uppercut – all of those shots that we worked in camp landed and I was very happy with that, just the big shot didn’t land where we wanted it to.

“From rounds five to seven, Floyd won those. I think we might have got round eight too…and then in nine and ten, we all know what happened in those.”

McGregor’s gas tank simply gave out late in the fight, allowing “Money” to pour on the punches and finish the Irishman off in the 10th round. When McGregor began to gas out his corner wanted him to tie up with Mayweather and push him backwards, but they were simply unable to do so:

“When it’s that intense, and you’re constantly being pushed back, it doesn’t matter how fit you are. From nine and ten, Floyd managed to put Conor on the back foot for those two rounds and kept walking him down.

“I know from experience, when someone is constantly pressuring you like that and you don’t have a second to get a breath, fatigue sets in really quick.

“It doesn’t matter how fit you are, that just happens. It was hard for Conor to get that breath back and recover. We were trying to get him to tie up and push Floyd backwards in nine, but we just couldn’t get the opportunity.

As for the stoppage, Roddy believes the first shot of the flurry that ended things did land, but the rest didn’t. The referee was simply just trying to look out for McGregor’s longterm health:

“The one shot did land, but then the two or three shots after it didn’t land. The way I look at it is, the ref is in there to look after the fighters…to protect the fighters,” he explained.

“I honestly think that because it was Conor’s first professional boxing fight, the ref could see that Conor was on edge.

“I’m sure he was thinking, if Floyd knocks him out and there was some serious damage done to Conor it would have been all on the ref. You have the critics saying that Conor shouldn’t have been in there.

“You have all of this and I’m sure in the ref’s eyes he thought, ‘I’m not taking the risk. He looks a bit wobbly and he looks a bit on edge, I’m going to call it.’

“If the ref believes the fighter is in danger then he’s going to do what he has to do.”

Conor McGregor’s stint as a boxer has come to a close – for now. So who will “The Notorious One” be fighting against next?

All signs point to McGregor returning to the world of mixed martial arts (MMA) to defend his UFC lightweight title. Top ranked 155 pounders Tony Ferguson and Kevin Lee are set to compete for the interim lightweight championship, with the winner likely to be the one to welcome the Irish knockout artist back to the Octagon.

While McGregor’s next appearance has yet to be confirmed, his striking coach, Owen Roddy, recently joined The MMA Hour to give his two cents on who he’d like to see his fighter take on next. If it were up to Roddy, he said he like to see the rivalry between McGregor and Diaz to come full circle in their highly-anticipated trilogy bout (quotes via MMA Fighting):

“I would probably like to see Diaz 3, but obviously you’ve got (Tony) Ferguson and (Kevin) Lee fighting for the interim belt,” he said. “If he’s to fight MMA again, it will probably have to be the winner of (Ferguson versus Lee).

“In my opinion, the reason I say Diaz is because those fights are so exciting. The build up is so exciting; the back and forth…there is nothing like it. It’s just a mad scene.

“The two fights against Diaz were probably the most exciting camps that I’ve been part of. To do that again would be unbelievable. As I see it, the fans would like that over everything else.”

While MMA may seem like the likely road for McGregor, there’s still the possibility he returns to the boxing ring. If McGregor does return to the UFC, Diaz would be his likely opponent, however, in a boxing return Roddy claims he has heard rumblings of McGregor possibly stepping in to fight Jeff Horn who was recently left opponentless after Manny Pacquiao was forced out of their scheduled Australia bout:

“If I was to pick MMA, I would definitely like to see the Diaz fight. Boxing, who knows?” he pondered.

“I saw today that there was talk about him fighting in Australia against the lad that beat (Manny) Pacquiao, Jeff Horn. Who knows? It’s an unbelievable spectacle whatever Conor does, so I don’t know.

“I like the idea of the Diaz fight, but I’m sure if it doesn’t happen next, I’m sure it’s down the line.”

Interestingly enough, Roddy didn’t bring up the name Paulie Malignaggi as a possible opponent for McGregor in boxing. When this was mentioned Roddy showed virtually no interest in the fight, claiming to have seen McGregor do ‘easy work’ on the former two weight world champion in sparring already:

“I saw that already…I saw that twice,” he said, laughing. “It was easy work.”

McGregor comes fresh off an August 26th TKO loss to Floyd Mayweather in the 10th round of their boxing fight. There has been speculation that McGregor could fight once again before the end of 2017, but Roddy could neither confirm or deny that:

“I’d like to think so, but who knows? I can speak when I’m told, ‘we’re about to sign on this’, or ‘we’re about to sign on that’, so until I see that I can’t really comment.

“For me, I’d like to see him fighting as often as he likes to fight because it’s just an unbelievable adventure. I’m happy to go wherever he wants to go and I’m to do whatever he wants to do. If he wants to take time off he takes time off, if he wants to go again we’ll go again.

“I’ve always been behind Conor in whatever decisions he makes, and I’ll be behind him for the next one, most definitely.”

McGregor was TKO’d in the tenth round after a spirited showing in the first few frames. In fact, McGregor took the first two to three rounds, landing a nasty counter lead uppercut in the first.

For an 0-0 professional boxer going against an undefeated legend in the sport, Team SBG has plenty to be proud of in how their teammate acquitted himself in the ring when he usually does his work in the octagon.

How do you feel about McGregor’s performance against Mayweather on Saturday night?
