The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) may have come under fire recently for allowing Kevin Lee to compete at October 7’s UFC 216 with an obvious staph infection, but the state of New York won’t be having any similar problems with light heavyweight Patrick Cummins.

Cummins announced on social media (via MMA Fighting) that he had acquired a ‘mutant’ staph infection that was so resilient even IV antibiotics would not kill it, making it impossible for him to make it to his scheduled bout against Corey Anderson at November 4’s UFC 217 from New York City. The infection was so bad his foot swelled up to almost twice normal size.

Check it out here:

It’s a significant setback for ‘Durkin,’ who rebounded from two TKO losses to Glover Teixeira and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira to win decisions over Gian Villante and Jan Blachowicz in his last two bouts.

In a division as talent-starved as light heavyweight, title contention is truly only a few wins away, but Cummins will obviously need his foot to go back to normal size before he can even consider a return.

Based on the toughness he’s displayed in the octagon since debuting as a late replacement for Rashad Evans in 2014, he should be back sooner than later.

Boxing is often credited with having given many a troubled youth an alternate path away from a life of crime, as well as an opportunity to make something of themselves – and the sport of mixed martial arts is no different.

Researching this article, there were many tales to be had of the rough childhoods, thuggish behavior, and poor choices that had led to 10 current UFC stars having been sent to jail at some point in their lives.

However, one recurring theme that cropped up more often than not was of these individuals then discovered MMA upon their release, and they were then able to use that as a springboard to move beyond their criminal past, channel their energy and attention in a more positive direction, and it ultimately lead to them competing in the Octagon.

It’s a positive take on what is otherwise a dark collection of stories that demonstrate just how close some of these stars came to throwing away any chance they had of making something of their lives. Let’s take a look back at how 10 current UFC athletes turned it around after going to jail.

Mark Hunt

Some of heavy-handed heavyweight Mark Hunt’s many fans may be surprised to discover that in his younger days before he discovered MMA, he had a reputation for violence and criminal behavior in his home city of Auckland, New Zealand.

Hunt and his siblings suffered horrific physical abuse at the hands of their father growing up, and the anger felt as a result of that led to him regularly getting into trouble himself for fighting on the streets.

Hunt also became involved in petty crimes and admits to having stolen dozens of cars in his early teens, before finally being sentenced to nine months in jail at just 16-years-old after mugging a man for his Dr Martens shoes.

Hunt didn’t learn his lesson though and was later put behind bars again for assault.

It was only when a bouncer convinced him to try martial arts after witnessing him knock out several people outside a nightclub that Hunt finally started to get his life on track, and in the two decades since he’s gone from living a pitiful existence to earning $750,000 every time he fights in the Octagon.

UFC Fight Night 210 is an event that is highly anticipated thanks to the fight card and the fervor excitement just keeps growing with every passing day as we edge closer to the fight night which is now just around the corner.

One fight that has kind of been shadowed by the other more nig name match ups is Patrick Cummins vs. Jan Blachowicz. However, if you were to actually take a closer look at the fighters and the potential this fight has – you will realize it can actually turn out to be one of the most interesting and highly competitive fights of the night.

Cummins (8-4) did not really get the UFC career start that he was hoping to when he lost out to Daniel Cormier, but he made up for it quickly and really sent out a strong message when he bounced back with three straight back to back wins. However, his recent form has gone south again and he has suffered three knock out losses in his last four fights.

On the other end of the octagon, we have Blachowicz (19-6) who also started his UFC career of with a bang after knocking out Ilir Latifi with a well landed body kick. Just like Cummins, Blachowicz’ recent form has not been on point as he has suffered three losses of his last four, but by decision.

So who will be able to turn things around and get back to winning ways? Even though Cummins is at a 2 inch disadvantage, we is better on the ground and we think he will be able to muscle his way to a victory via unanimous decision.
