UFC President Dana White spoke with the media on Tuesday night after the latest installment of his Contender Series, which aired on the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass. While speaking with the reporters, he noted that he has “nothing against” Paulie Malignaggi.

The UFC boss revealed that they did offer Showtime some of their infamous sparring footage from the sessions between Malignaggi and UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor.

Malignaggi briefly served as a McGregor sparring partner to help the UFC champion train for his upcoming boxing match against Floyd Mayweather later this month. Malignaggi and White have offered different accounts of how the sparring sessions unfolded.

Following Malignaggi’s sudden exit from the McGregor camp, photos from their sparring sessions surfaced online. Then, White released 22 unflattering seconds of footage on social media.

“I have nothing against Paulie,” White told MMAjunkie and other reporters on Tuesday during a small media scrum. “I don’t even know the guy. I don’t know him. But you know me, man. When you start talking (expletive) – (with) how I get – I actually felt bad for the guy. I actually felt bad for him.”

There is a reason that Showtime didn’t want to use the footage and that is due to Malignaggi being a Showtime commentator and will provide analysis for the Aug. 26 pay-per-view telecast of Mayweather vs. McGregor.

“The last thing I want to do is get in a beef with Showtime, but we gave them a ton of the footage of the (Malignaggi vs. McGregor) sparring, and they denied it – because they didn’t want to make Paulie look bad,” he said. “They had a ton of the sparring footage, and they wanted to use zero (of it).”

“As far as his health goes, he made the right decision to leave that camp,” White said. ” … I think he made the decision for his health, and I think it was the right decision. And I’m not talking (expletive). What do I care? It makes no difference in my life whatsoever.

“This was a deal between Conor and this boxer and whatever. But I’m just telling you he made the right decision for his health, because it was a 12-round straight ass-whooping. It was as bad an ass-whooping as I’ve ever seen.”

There has been much debate within the combat sports world regarding the video of Conor McGregor and Paulie Malignaggi sparring that was released by UFC President Dana White.

Ahead of his Aug. 26 mega fight with Floyd Mayweather, McGregor brought in Malignaggi as a sparring partner, and him and his team have claimed that he scored a knockdown on the former world champion, although Malignaggi claims it was a push.

Tom Taylor, a licensed California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) boxing referee and judge, spoke with MMAFighting.com on the matter, and said he ‘wouldn’t argue it either way’:

“I can’t tell you how I would have scored it live,” Taylor said. “I may have called it a knockdown, because the last thing to land was a short right hand to the side of Paulie’s head. That could still constitute a knockdown.

“It’s a judgment call and I think it could go either way. I wouldn’t argue it either way if a referee said it was a knockdown or no knockdown.”

While he admits that it looked like a knockdown, Taylor said that after watching it time and time again, he would’ve labeled it ‘no knockdown’:

“Live, it looked like a knockdown,” Taylor said. “The first time I looked at the video — that quick six, seven seconds — it looked like a knockdown. But when you slow it down, you can see how he has him held down behind his neck, behind his head. Paulie pulls up and [McGregor] lets go, [Malignaggi’s] momentum is taking him. And then there’s that short little right hand that lands.

“So it would definitely be a judgment call right then and there. But looking at this video, I would say no knockdown.”

In the end, regardless of whether it was truly a knockdown or not, Taylor admitted that he was ‘very impressed’ with McGregor’s performance:

“I’ll tell you, I was very impressed,” Taylor said. “He surprised me. He surprised me with some skills, he surprised me with how he put his punches together, his combinations. Absolutely. It was much better than I anticipated what I thought I might see, if that makes sense.”

What do you make of the situation?

UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor claims that ex-boxing champ Paulie Malignaggi was concussed following their sparring sessions earlier this month – but that may not be the case.

Striking coach Angelo Reyes recently did an interview on MMA Junkie Radio to discuss the upcoming superfight between McGregor and undefeated 49-0 legend Floyd Mayweather Jr. that is set to go down in two weeks’ time (Sat. August 26, 2017), and claimed that he saw Malignaggi following his sparring sessions with the Irishman – and he seemed just fine (quotes via MMA Junkie):

“When I saw Paulie, there was no indication it was a hard sparring session,” Reyes said. “In fact, it was the complete opposite.

“Everything was happy,” Reyes said. “So in my head, when Conor was saying, ‘He’s concussed,’ I would know if a fighter is concussed the next day depending on how he looked.”

Malignaggi then chimed in on the call and stated that he had fallen down more form exhaustion and clinching up with “The Notorious One” rather than suffering the affects of his striking:

“Right now, they’ve managed to cover up everything with this video,” Malignaggi said. “I think that was the point of releasing it, so nobody would talk about (McGregor’s) realistic chances.”

Reyes then went on to deliver a message to the UFC 155-pound champ, urging him not to lie about the events that transpired between he and Malignaggi inside the squared circle, noting that the boxing world isn’t too fond of liars:

“Just don’t lie about it, Conor,” Reyes said. “Either say nothing, or say the truth. But don’t lie. You don’t have to go, ‘He was concussed.’ Dude, I was hanging out with him. If that’s what a fighter looks like (concussed). … In the boxing world, we don’t like liars.”

Conor McGregor could be setting up his next boxing match after his program with Floyd Mayweather is concluded.

The UFC lightweight champion is set to make his professional boxing debut against, arguably, the greatest of all time in undefeated 49-0 Floyd Mayweather in just two weeks (Sat. August 26, 2017). While Mayweather vs. McGregor has been getting most of the love as it pertains to promotion, another massive boxing contest is just over the horizon as well.

WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, and IBO middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin is set to defend his titles against boxing superstar Canelo Alvarez in a boxing purist’s dream fight from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on September 16, 2017. If McGregor is able to shock the world and pull off a victory against Mayweather, many have begun to ponder the possibility of the Irishman continuing his boxing career against the winner of Golovkin and Alvarez.

McGregor recently spoke to media ahead of his open workout last week and commented on the Canelo vs. GGG bout, taking a few shots at the pair of middleweights (quotes via MMA Mania):

“I’m not really too much of a fan of either of those,” McGregor said. “I think Canelo’s a little but stuck, a little bit flat on his feet. When I watch footage of him I just see him getting peppered — he has no feet under him.”

“Golovkin I think came into camp, for this preparation, badly out of shape. I’m looking at him badly out of shape up in Big Bear and I just see a drained individual,” he said. “So, although they’re supposedly up there as well, I don’t really think they are.”
