There is one rising contender who has called out Chris Weidman for an upcoming fight.

That contender is Paulo Costa, who is coming off a big win over Uriah Hall on the preliminary portion of the UFC 226 pay-per-view event this past weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada.

As a result of this fight, it marked his fourth straight fight in the UFC with all of those wins coming by knockout or TKO. He has never been past the second round while under the UFC banner.

There were man fight fans that believed Costa would fight Israel Adesanya, who is fresh off a unanimous-decision win over vet Brad Tavares in the main event of The Ultimate Fighter 27 Finale the night prior to UFC 226. However, Costa made it clear that he didn’t know who Adesanya is.

“I don’t know who (he is),” Costa (12-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) told MMAjunkie after his win over Hall (13-9 MMA, 6-7 UFC). “I think when he comes to (the) top 10 or top five … I can think about him.”

Instead, Costa has his sights set on a showdown with former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman at the upcoming UFC 230 pay-per-view event.

“This is just one more victory on my way to the world title,” Costa said, according to the UFC. “Now I want to face a top fighter. I want to fight Chris Weidman. No one in this division can win against me. I’m the most powerful middleweight, and I’m showing that in every fight. Uriah had very good timing and connected the jabs, but I knew he would not be able to handle my power. I’m ready for the next battle.”

“Let’s fight,” Costa said. “Let’s make a great fight in his hometown in November to see who deserves to go to the next title shot in November, after (Kelvin) Gastelum.”

The UFC 229 pay-per-view event is set to take place on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan, New York City. The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET while the preliminary card will air on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass.

Six Biggest Takeaways From An Insane UFC 226

Check out the six biggest takeaways from last night’s blockbuster UFC 226:

UFC 226 was the crown jewel of this year’s International Fight Week. The landmark event delivered on every level – except for one horrific fight – despite losing the co-main event just days prior.

The fact that Max Holloway was supposed to defend the featherweight title against Brian Ortega last evening is an afterthought that no one is talking about; that’s how awesome UFC 226 was.

Dana White went so far as to say it could’ve been the best offering in the history of the UFC if the card would’ve stayed intact. Regardless, UFC 226 had something for everyone, from big knockouts to a slick “Showtime” submission, and finally, the return of Brock Lesnar.

So now that the dust has settled and the smoke has cleared, let’s take a look at the six biggest takeaways from UFC 226.

Paulo Costa Is Brazil’s Next Big Star

Brazil has had more than their fair share of combat sports legends.

Royce Gracie, Anderson Silva, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Shogun Rua, and Lyoto Machida, amongst others, all had tremendous careers inside the octagon and went on to capture UFC gold, and there’s no doubt Silva will take his rightful place in the HOF as soon as he hangs em’ up despite two recent drug test failures.

The latest in a long lineage of Brazilian phenoms, Paulo “Borrachinha” Costa. The undefeated middleweight destroyer will be leaving Las Vegas with another victory, as he looked incredible against Uriah Hall. Costa improved to 12-0 as he landed body blow after body blow, finally overwhelming a game Hall in the process.

“Borrachinha”, however, did show some holes in his stand-up game. Costa was far too willing to trade with the faster fighter, and Hall continually found a home for his lead jab. Oddly enough, “Borrachinha” means “The Eraser” when translated in English; if the 27-year old can “Erase” the holes in his stand-up game, he could become Brazil’s next big MMA star.

UFC 226 emanated tonight (Saturday, July 7, 2018) from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The card capped International Fight Week, the main attraction of which featured a heavyweight superfight between 265-pound king Stipe Miocic and light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier. DC would become just the second simultaneous two-division champion with a shocking first-round knockout of Miocic. Not only does he seem to have a money fight upcoming against Brock Lesnar, but he walks away $50,000 richer with one of the night’s four Performance of the Night bonuses.

Anthony Pettis picked up a much-needed win, submitting Michael Chiesa with a second-round triangle choke. Chiesa seemed drained after the first few minutes, perhaps hampered by the bad weight cut that saw him miss the mark. Pettis found his footing after a few scrambles in round one. At the opening of the second, Pettis hurt Chiesa, went for a guillotine, and eventually transitioned to the fight-ending choke. He banked an extra $50,000 for his efforts as well.

Khalil Rountree picked up the most significant and emphatic win of his career on the main card as well. Taking on decorated kickboxer-turned-MMA fighter Gokhan Saki, Rountree was undeterred. He dropped Saki with a counter left hand early, pounding with hammerfists to finish the job. Rountree will wake up tomorrow $50,000 richer for his Performance of the Night.

Lastly, the featured prelim saw middleweight hitters Paulo Costa and Uriah Hall go back and forth for about eight minutes. Costa consistently backed Hall up and smashed home massive hooks to the head and body. Hall jabbed, leg kicked, and hit several spinning back kicks to the body. Early in round two, Hall rocked Costa with a hook inside. The Brazilian quickly recovered, though, and resumed his assault with renewed vigor. Moments later, he collapsed Hall with a series of close-quarter power punches, earning the most significant win of his career and an extra $50,000 to boot.
