Each year, a new class of prospects catch the attention of fight fans.

With Conor McGregor and Ronda Rousey, the biggest stars of the past few years – and perhaps ever – now gone from the sport for the time being, the UFC is in a transitionary period as Endeavor attempts to build new dependable pay-per-view draws.

Fighters like Sage Northcutt and Paige VanZant initially made a big impact and the expectations were high, but not all prospects pan out in the cage. Those once-hyped prospects are still around, but they’ve given way to a new crop of potential future stars who are performing in the cage in addition to having their own highly marketable qualities.

So the UFC has potential stars in their midst, but with PPV sales slumping as the promotion seems to be waiting around for McGregor to return, the time is now for them to build for the future as they cannot afford more down years by failing to promote their best chances at box office success.

With the majority of a new year of MMA ahead of us, let’s take a look at six future stars the UFC simply can’t afford to miss promoting throughout this year.

6. Sean O’Malley

O’Malley captured UFC president Dana White’s attention and the exec quickly signed him.

‘Sugar’ certainly has delivered thus far, winning both of his UFC fights with stylish striking and adept grappling.

He even won his last fight after severely damaging his leg in the third round. With his charisma and fighting style, it’s no wonder the company wants to push this kid into star territory.

As O’Malley works his way up the bantamweight division, he’s certainly a fighter to watch out for. At just 23 years old, the Montana native could be a star in a post-McGregor world.

But let’s see him against a step up in competition before the hype train really starts to start. A fight against Rob Font or Thomas Almeida is a perfect test to really see where O’Malley is at, and if he wins that, the UFC should seriously consider pushing his promotion into high gear.

Back in 2013-2014, a fighter named Fallon Fox stirred up great controversy as she racked up a 5-1 record on the regional MMA circuit.

The controversy arose from the fact that Fox was born a man and had undergone gender reassignment surgery, prompting many in the fight world such as UFC octagon commentator Joe Rogan and veteran heavyweight Matt Mitrione to question if she should truly be allowed to fight women inside the cage.

But even though Fox is now 42 years old and has not fought since September 2014, she’s somehow still in the crosshairs of a rising UFC contender.

Hulking middleweight Paulo Costa recently sounded off on Fox’s MMA stint in a Facebook video chat (quotes via Bloody Elbow), going so far as to challenge Fox to a fight he said would be over in a few minutes:

“I would love it if this Fallon Fox fought a man,” Costa said. “A well-prepared fighter. In fact, I’m making myself available to fight him for free, just so I can beat him up. I wouldn’t even need much time. Just a few minutes.”

Noah K. Murray for USA TODAY Sports

Considering that Costa is widely considered one of the most dangerous rising male fighters who has finished all of his 11 pro fights in the first two rounds at a weight class many pounds above Fox’s, there’s little doubt about that, and it’s pointless to speculate.

It was indeed questionable that Fox was allowed to fight women in MMA, as it was a grey area that had never been dealt with before, and may have been used to get some controversy and attention brewing for the smaller promotions she participated in. Costa continued to berate those who allowed her to fight females, noting that the women ‘he’ faced put their lives on the line:

“He was born a man, and he is a man, even though he calls himself a transsexual”, Costa said. “It’s absurd cowardice, not only by him, but also by the promoters of any event that has accepted this kind of absurdity. He has simply annihilated the girls who have fought against him. They were slaughtered, they put their lives at risk, they put their physical integrity at risk.”

Ultimately, Costa wouldn’t go off on Fox’s life choice to change her gender, but focused on his view that fighting women after doing so was simply wrong:

“I don’t want to get into [the personal aspect] of his choice, to be transsexual or not, homosexual or not. What happens here is that a man is fighting against girls, against women, as if he were one. This is absurd, and it can’t be accepted.”

Many have shared his view on the subject; however, they haven’t really done so for four or even five years, making it seem like his outburst is a bit dated and irrelevant, especially considering that it would seem like Costa has much, much bigger fish to fry in the talented middleweight landscape.

Fox has been out of action for some time, and at 42, it’s doubtful she ever returns to the cage, so the hulking Brazilian will have to settle for the top contenders in the storied UFC 185-pound division, which should suit him just fine.

The UFC has become a star-driven business over the years, and as we move into 2018 there are a number of fighters who are vying to become the next big thing in the promotion.

In this article, we’ll home in on ten fighters who have shown the potential make a big impact in the coming year, from breakthrough prospects poised to take the next step towards stardom to established talents who are on the verge of becoming major draws for the UFC.

Brian Ortega

Brian ’T-City’ Ortega has been tipped as a star of the future for some time now, and 2018 looks like being the year that could see him fulfill that destiny.

Ortega breezed through 2017 with his unbeaten career record still intact at 13-0-1, while also earning the biggest victory to date by submitting Cub Swanson via guillotine choke in December.

That fight proved to be another Brazilian jiu-jitsu masterclass and it marked the 26-year-old’s fifth win in a row inside the Octagon, taking him to No.3 in the featherweight rankings and on the verge of title contention heading into the new year.

Ortega also has the kind of look and laid-back personality that suggests widespread popularity could be within his grasp, and Dana White is known to be a big believer in his ability to become a big star.

”The kid is incredible and he is absolutely, positively the future,” White declared after his latest victory, while also praising him for being a “grounded, humble, down-to-earth kid,” who told the UFC president immediately after his latest victory that he wants to use his growing reputation to do charity work.
