I guess it goes without saying, but today has been a pretty slow news day. But even if it wasn’t, I like to imagine we’d still give this our attention. When something as rare as Bob Sapp being involved in a competitive fight happens, it’s worth a few cheap laughs seconds.
Sapp headlined Super Fight League 1, which was live on Youtube earlier this morning, against robbery victim James Thompson. While weighing in for his fight against “The Colossus”, Bob Sapp landed one of the most beautiful backfists I’ve ever seen. His technique was flawless, like it was a something he had actually been practicing. Even Phil Baroni, who was on hand to introduce fighters, seemed shocked at the technique on display from “The Beast”.
Of course, it would have been far more impressive if it actually landed on James Thompson. Or if it, you know, was intentional. But it’s probably for the best that the move was an accident. If he had been trying to do that, he probably would have missed, taken a dive and immediately started tapping.

As for his actual fight against James Thompson, picture his fight against Rolles Gracie. Now imagine he had mounted an actual attack at some point during the fight. And imagine that he tapped after awkwardly landing after a takedown a little less than two minutes into the fight. Yep, that’s how he lost this time.
Also of note from the card, Jimmy Ambriz defeated Satish Jha via TKO just fourteen seconds into their bout. Your move, Todd Duffee.

Former Strikeforce Women’s Featherweight Champion Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos will appeal her one-year long suspension handed down by the California State Athletic Commission at their next meeting, scheduled for April 9, according to MMA junkie.
CSAC Executive Director George Dodd confirmed the news on Monday when contacted by MMA junkie, though he also mentioned that an agenda for the meeting was not set yet.
Santos was suspended on January 6 when she failed a CSAC post-fight drug test for the anabolic steroid stanozolol.
Cyborg briefly improved her winning streak to 11 after knocking out title challenger Hiroko Yamanaka just 16 seconds into their Dec. 17 fight that took place in San Diego, California.
However, the result of the bout was changed to a no-contest and Cyborg was stripped of her title as a result of the positive drug test.
The female fighter took to her official website the next day offering an apology to the fans, although she ultimately blamed the failed drug test on an over-the-counter diet supplement, which she did not name.
A source from within Santos’ camp said the 26-year-old fighter hoped to have the length of her suspension reduced so that it will be possible to book her next fight.
In the past, fighters such as then UFC Lightweight Champion Sean Sherk and then Strikeforce middleweight Phil Baroni, both in 2007, successfully appealed CSAC issued suspensions.
In both cases, the suspensions were cut down from one year to six months.
After a year in the pokey, War Machine finally returned to competition Saturday night at Ultimate Warrior Fighting 1 in Pharr, Texas, where he faced off against former UFC lightweight darling Roger Huerta in the event’s welterweight headliner. And even though prison ring-rust has to be the worst kind of ring-rust — nutraloaf and sandwich masturbation don’t exactly make for an ideal fighter lifestyle — Mr. Machine handled himself admirably, out-hustling Huerta in a gritty back-and-forth scrap.
Unfortunately, Huerta broke his rib during a scramble in round three, seemingly when War sneaks in that knee at the video’s 15:10 mark. War Machine took advantage of Huerta’s weakened state and laid on punches from the top until the match was stopped. And so, War Machine writes the first chapter of his unlikely comeback story, while Huerta picks up the fifth loss in his last six attempts.

Special props to the always colorful Phil Baroni, who was particularly qualified for his commentary gig considering he’s trained with War Machine at Xtreme Couture, and used to drink snake-blood in Thailand with Huerta. But he’s an even better TV director. (“There’s a ring card girl with a nice ass; put it on her, not on me, dude…The camera guy’s telling me to look at him! Shut up camera-guy before I knock you out!”)
Lord knows the broadcast needed the help. You know you’re watching a second-rate MMA production when they show fans in the crowd while the fight is happening. Check out the portly cowboy at the 2:59 mark. Even he’s like, “bro, of all the people to film right now.”

Much the excitement for the event came from the comparisons to PRIDE. According to ONE’s website, they utilize “a combination rule set of global MMA best practices, blending Asian and non-Asian rules”, meaning no restriction to elbow, knee, or kicking attacks on a grounded opponent. We didn’t see any at the first event, and I’m still not entirely clear on how the fighters were instructed.
They didn’t get Lenne Hardt (AKA The Crazy Screaming PRIDE Lady), but they did get Yuji Shimada (AKA “I don’t care, kill him. Do you want to win?”) in to referee.
It does seem that ONE is shooting for high production values as PRIDE did, but there were no grand displays. No elaborate entrances, although there was an amusingly eclectic mix of music chosen for walkouts, which led to the revelation that Bas Rutten digs Lady Gaga and Johnny Cash. The crowd was relatively sparse in the 12,000 capacity stadium, but they were an enthusiastic bunch.
And with good reason: the card was full of good action throughout.
For the grappling fans:Kelly vs Chilson, BJJ aces vs South Koreans named “Kim”. Both Gregor Gracie and Leandro Issa outpointed Kims, and there was jits popping out all over the place. Gracie’s opponent Seok Mo Kim had outstanding submission defense, escaping a triangle and surviving multiple arm triangle chokes from Gracie, who is going to be catching hell from family for failing to finish a fight in which he scored and maintained mount for minutes at a time. Kelly took home a $5K bonus for sub of the night for sleeping Chilson with a standing RNC.
For the KO junkie: Sityodong vs Mashamaite, Ng vs Bo, Colossa vs Yu, Rahman vs Ghosh. Both Ng and Bo are generally favorites of livebloggers everywhere. Beats the hell out of Magomed Sultanakhmedov, Georgi Karakhanyan, and Jadamba Narantungalag, is all I’m saying.
For the “PRIDE mismatch to make the home team look like a ninja” fan: Rahman vs Ghosh. Raheem Rahman picked up the $5K knockout of the night bonus after plowing through his opponent in the first.
For the sadist: Moreira vs Wang. Not a gory fight, but painful nonetheless. Yuji Shimada has seen some world-class ass whoopings in his lifetime, so don’t expect him to stop a fight unless someone’s ear falls off. If a fighter wants to continue to soak up punishment in the second round, Shimada is willing let him. And the fighter does. So Shimada does.
Fight of the night: Folayang vs Kwon. Supposedly a mismatch on paper, this was a fast-paced, even contested fight with lots of fun kick technique and some wild exchanges. Go watch it.
Notes to Victor Cui (ONE CEO): Can you hook up with HDNET? That would be great, then we can watch these in high def, and rewind when Folayang and Kwon are moving to damn fast for us to follow. Also, a little pyrotechnics never hurt nobody.*
All in all a fun event, albeit short of rivaling PRIDE’s inaugural event or UFC’s current dominance. If the first broadcast is any indication, ONE FC will be the leader in MMA in the eastern hemisphere in short order. I know I’ll tune in again.
