It’s not easy to be a role model in a sport where your primary job is to take advantage of the weaknesses of your opponent, sometimes including beating him or her to a bloody pulp. This type of violence is generally viewed negatively by the main stream which has taken its fair share of jabs at the sport of mixed martial arts throughout the years.

However there are competitors and ambassadors for the sport who have broken the perceived mold of being beer-chugging thugs who have anger problems. It’s not an easy thing to do, but these people have taken it upon themselves to not only place themselves on a level of physical superiority, but also conduct themselves in a way that would attract positive attention to the sport.

Sure, there will always be the Nick Diaz’s and Brock Lesnar’s of the world who sometimes make questionable decisions outside the cage, so these MMA role models will have to continue to do their job while hoping that their actions rub off on others if they hope to change the way that MMA is perceived in the mainstream media.

With so much emphasis always being placed on the negatives in sports and the world in general, I thought it would nice to take a look at the good guys of MMA. So in this slideshow, we’ll examine eight MMA role models who should be viewed as examples of how both physical and mental preparedness come together to create some of the best athletes and all of professional sports.

Mixed martial arts was piggybacked by the likes of these proverbial legends in the sport, who reigned dominant in their heyday as champions or notable figures.

However, like with every reign, all good things must come to an end.

Case in point: Chuck Liddell, who is arguably the greatest light heavyweight to have ever lived. The prestigious honor is no stretch, as “The Iceman” was an early dominant force in the organization, having bested several world-class opponents in devastating fashion.

However, the knockout artist would later succumb to his own lopsided losses at the tail end of his career and blemished his legacy because of it, much like these men who called it quits just a little too late.

According to a report from TATAME, Brazilian light heavyweight standout Glover Texeira will take on former UFC heavyweight champion Ricco Rodriguez on November 27 in the main event of a show titled “MMA Against Dengue.”

The event, which is being organized by the municipal government of Rio de Janeiro to educate residents about the deadly Dengue Fever, will take place at Pacificador Square, in Duque de Caxias.

Where I live, we’re lucky if the local government organizes a flu shot clinic.

Undefeated in his past 13 outings, Texeira (15-2), who trained at The Pit with John Hackleman and Chuck Liddell before running into visa issues, has not lost since 2005 when he dropped a unanimous decision to Ed Herman at Sportfight 9. Since then the 32-year-old has finished all but one opponent, notching ten knockouts and two submissions in that span. His biggest win came against Thierry Rameau Sokoudjou under the WEC banner prior to the “African Assassin” making a name for himself in PRIDE.

Rodriguez (47-12) is winless in his last two bouts, but prior to the slide was 12-0 in as many fights, however the streak came against less than stellar competition. Plagued with addiction for a large portion of his career, the 34-year-old former Lion’s Den and Team Punishment fighter’s last notable win was nine years ago when he finished Randy Couture with a well-timed elbow at UFC 39 to win the vacant UFC heavyweight strap.

No other bouts have been announced for the card.

With fan favorite mixed martial arts legends like Randy Couture, Chuck Liddell and Mirko Cro Cop recently hanging up the gloves, there is definitely a changing of the guard happening with MMA in 2011. Many people are also saying that the time is right for Wanderlei Silva to follow suit.

It is the brutal question in any aging and declining professional athlete’s mind: When is the right time to retire from the game you love with no regrets?

Nick Diaz’s destruction of BJ Penn this weekend has prompted the 32-year-old Penn to look in the mirror and ponder that very decision. Penn hinted at his retirement in the cage immediately following his loss but common belief and hope is that Penn steps back and takes his time with the finality of that decision.

Here are  Penn and five fighters who retired too soon.
