Roy Nelson Scores Brutally Boring Win over Jared Rosholt at UFC Fight Night 82

UFC Fight Night 82’s Roy Nelson has been a fan favorite for years now. When “Big Country” grounded and pounded his way to victory over Kimbo Slice, rubbed his belly and angered the always divisive Dana White on The Ultimate Fighter Season 10, fans instantly gravitated to him for his uniqueness and everyman appeal.

That was six years ago.

In the time since, Nelson has faced future champions and fading greats. He hasn’t come close to title contention since 2010, but has nonetheless managed to remain one of the heavyweight division’s most popular characters.

Unfortunately, that recognizability has made Nelson a very good UFC enhancement talent. Pro wrestling fans would label him a “jobber to the stars,” as he soundly beat the riffraff but consistently flopped against top-10 names. That put him in a very difficult position in a thin heavyweight division, as he settled into a “rebound opponent” role.

That lead to five ugly losses in six fights and put Nelson’s back to the wall entering Fight Night 82. Riding a three fight losing streak, he was likely going to be released with a loss. His one hope for remaining in the UFC was defeating up-and-coming wrestler Jared Rosholt.

He managed to do just that…but may have hurt his brand in the process.

The first round was a prolonged feeling-out period. Rosholt was visibly reluctant to engage in a striking contest, fearing Nelson’s signature right hand while Nelson was content in maintaining the center of the cage. There was a brief moment of action when Rosholt appeared to tag Nelson along the fence, but neither fighter made a strong case to the judges.

The second round, however, was flat-out boring. Nelson and Rosholt were serenaded with boos from the get-go, but they remained content with circling one another. While the first round had a spurt of action, the second was nothing but coasting.

Neither man felt comfortable heading into the third but after an opening minute where they alternated cat-and-mouse roles, the third was more of the same. Nelson moved forward, Rosholt circled out and little of consequence happened, as Hunter Alek Homistek of MMA Fighting pointed out:

The decision was read to a chorus of heckling from the crowd with the scorecards all breaking in Nelson’s favor to the tune of 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28.

Here are some notes and thoughts from this fight:

  • Nelson desperately needed that win. Desperately. While this one will quickly be forgotten, it still ends a three-fight losing streak and likely saves Nelson from being released.
  • While Rosholt hasn’t wowed anyone in his career to this point, his 6-1 UFC record still stood out. This loss to an aging Nelson, however, locks him out of the top-10 for the foreseeable future.
  • That was actually Nelson’s first decision win in the UFC, and just the second time he has won a fight by something other than first-round knockout.

Heavyweights Roy Nelson and Jared Rosholt came into their fight in the co-main event of tonight’s (Sat., February 6, 2016) UFC Fight Night 82 from MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas at different points of their mixed martial arts (MMA) careers.

No. 11-ranked ‘Big Country’ was looking to prove he still belonged in the UFC after losing five of his last six bouts, while No. 12 Rosholt was seeking to show he deserved a spot in the Top 10.

The fight predicted to play out in Rosholt’s favor if it hit the mat, and obviously is ‘Big Country’s’ if it unfolded in the stand-up. Nelson began stalking Rosholt early, holding his trademark overhand right cocked. Not much was thrown in the opening moments, but ‘Big Country’ controlled the Octagon.

Nelson rushed forward with a combo that narrowly whiffed, but Rosholt landed two strong punches. A few seconds later, tagged Nelson with the fight’s most significant strikes after he caught him rushing in. Rosholt used a stick-and-move gameplan to avoid Nelson’s big power by staying out of his way in an uneventful first round.

In the second, Rosholt went for a takedown but missed, eating a counter left from Nelson. ‘Big Country’ landed a massive leg kick that appeared to hurt Rosholt, but Nelson didn’t take advantage. Rosholt continued to stay far from Rosholt, snapping a body kick while earning boos from the crowd. Finally, Nelson found a home for some big punches, unleashing two strong combos before a scramble resulted in the end of the second frame.

The third and final frame saw Nelson start with a second huge low kick, and he surprisingly went for a takedown that had little chance. Nelson swung wildly, landing intermittent shots and keeping his pressure of Rosholt high. Rosholt then went for a deep takedown but was stuffed, and the low-on-action bout came to an end with more wild swings from Nelson that failed to land.

It wasn’t pretty, but ultimately Nelson took home the fight by unanimous decision.

Final Result: Roy Nelson def. Jared Rosholt via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

Johny Hendricks vs. Stephen Thompson:

Mike Drahota:

There’s a likely outcome to this impromptu main event, and then there’s a second (and more unlikely) one. The first is the clear pick that sees former champion ‘Bigg Rigg’ use his NCAA Championship-level wrestling skills to grind ‘Wonderboy’ down, as that’s really the only way Thompson has been shut down in the UFC.

The second is Thompson using his striking and range to blast ‘Bigg Rigg’ with a surprising shot and/or piecing him up with fast, relentless combos to win a huge upset. Hendricks has taken the best shots current welterweight champion Robbie Lawler could dish out, however, and I don’t think he’ll get knocked out here. I envision a fight like Hendricks’ latest win over Matt Brown, who, interestingly enough, defeated Thompson with a similar gameplan I foresee Hendricks using. ‘Bigg Rigg’ via unanimous decision.

Rory Kernaghan:

Hendricks vs. Thompson is a very interesting contrast of styles. On one hand you have the wrestling base and power striking of Hendricks, and on the other there’s ‘Wonderboy’ with his karate base and crazy kicks. Once again this is a fight that will be won and lost in the range department. The longer reach and better arsenal goes to Thompson on the outside, but Hendricks will rule this fight in short range. The weight issue for ‘Bigg Rigg’ will hopefully be a thing of the past, but a rough cut could mean a sub par performance. Providing there’s no hiccups, I see Hendricks taking a decision here.

Mike Henken:

This was a tough one to call for me, but I’m going to go with the upset here. Hendricks is a former champion with one-punch knockout power and one of the best wrestling pedigrees in the game today. Looking ripped and in shape, it appears he has left his weight cutting issues in the past, but he has tired in five-round fights before. That being said, he will be going up against the rangy “Wonderboy” Thompson, a man amongst the very best strikers in all of MMA. In my opinion, if Thompson can stop the takedown, and he has trained with former middleweight champion Chris Weidman, it’s his fight to lose. I expect him to use his length, movement, and vicious arsenal of kicks to pick up the biggest victory of his career. “Wonderboy” by fourth round TKO.

Roy Nelson vs. Jared Rosholt:

Mike Drahota:

I just can’t seem to get motivated by this fight in the co-main event slot, as fan favorite as sputtered as a one-dimensional knockout striker (who really only uses one move, a thunderous overhand right), while Rosholt is a talented enough but middling prospect in the UFC’s most boring – and slow-moving – division.

This bout certainly isn’t going to change that, and outside of a huge fight-ending [punch from ‘Big Country,’ I see Rosholt largely controlling the rotund Nelson, who’s failed against elite grapplers in losing five out of his last six, to win the decision here. Rosholt by decision is the pick.

Rory Kernaghan:

Roy Nelson vs. Jared Rosholt is a strange match to say the least, with one heavy hitting knockout artist in ‘Big Country’ and a smothering wrestler in Rosholt. The truth to this one is I feel Rosholt has no place being in the Octagon with someone of Roy’s caliber, with notable wins over some legends of the sport to his credit and a missile for a right hand. Nelson, first round KO, take that one to the bank.

Mike Henken:

Nelson has looked, well, rather awful as of late to say the least. Losing his last three bouts, it appears as if Nelson may be nearing the end of his time, and he will be facing off with a hungry Division I wrestler here in Rosholt. I wouldn’t be surprised to Rosholt to tire Nelson, who has never had the best cardio, and grind out a victory, but “Big Country” does possess that one game-changing tool: the right hand from hell. With the ability to put a man to sleep at any given point, I think we see one more bomb from “Big Country” here. Nelson by second round KO.

Although fight fans love the back and forth, bloody wars that come around from time to time, there’s nothing that displays pure excitement quite like a knockout.

In a sport that adores finishes, multiple fighters have made a name for themselves by possessing an ability that most just don’t have: the ability to put another fighter to sleep with one shot.

In mixed martial arts (MMA) specifically, one well-timed, picture perfect punch can change a fight entirely, and we have seen this time and time again.

With a plethora of power punches inhabiting the UFC’s roster, let’s take a look back at five of the best one-punch knockouts of all-time:

Roy Nelson was in an absolute battle against former UFC heavyweight champion Josh Barnett on Saturday night. It should not come as too much of a surprise, then, that he is a bit worse for the wear—especially in the right hand region.

Check out this photo he posted on his Facebook page:

Back from the doctor, hand is broke. Will heal up with the love & support of the Country Club Fans

Posted by Roy “Big Country” Nelson on Wednesday, September 30, 2015

Now I’m not a doctor, but I’m pretty sure thumbs aren’t supposed to look like that.

Nelson, of course, was quite active Saturday night. Main eventing Fight Night 75 in Japan opposite Barnett, Big Country found himself in a war of attrition. While he is mostly known for his devastating punching power, he did strong work along the cage and on the mat with one of MMA‘s craftiest veterans. Unfortunately, Barnett’s catch wrestling and clinchwork proved to be the difference, and he came up shy on the scorecards to the tune of 48-47, 48-47 and 50-45.

Unsurprisingly, Nelson was given a hefty 190-day medical suspension (via MixedMartialArts.com). It will be interesting to see when, and where, he ends up returning.
