Former UFC heavyweight and Ultimate Fighter competitor and current Bellator ‘star’ Kimbo Slice is coming off one of the most bizarre fights in MMA history. Fighting fellow street fighting/Youtube sensation Dada 5000 (real name Dhafir Harris) at Bellator 149, Slice (real name Kevin Ferguson) won with a rather sloppy knockout. The two brawlers stood toe to toe for the entire fight, but the problem was they’d swung out of gas by the end of round one, and so the ensuing rounds were void of technique and chock full of almost comical exchanges.

The story didn’t end in the Bellator cage though, as it was later revealed that Dada 5000 had suffered various life threatening injuries during the fight. They were not as a result of the punches he took though, and they included his heart stopping twice during the fight. So we’ll put this weird fight in to the reaches of our distant memories, we thought, but alas it was still far from over for Slice at least.

The news then broke that both Kimbo Slice and Ken Shamrock, who had fought Royce Gracie in a similarly poor fight on Bellator 149, had failed drug tests. Slice had a T to E (Testosterone to Epitestosterone) level of 6.4-1, well over the 4-1 allowed ratio by the Texas Commission. Shamrock had tested positive for a number of performance enhancing anabolic steroids, to the surprise of no one, as the 52-year old appeared to have discovered a fountain of youth before his recent MMA return. Anyway, despite his rather lacklustre performance at BMMA 149, Slice still got a high level call out from one of the biggest names in all mixed martial arts, Wanderlei Silva.

‘The Axe Murderer’ is poised to make his return under the Rizin banner, run by the same Sakakibara who owned Pride FC, in a tag team grappling match. He recently declared he’d fight twice under MMA rules this year too, at least once under the Bellator banner:

“In Bellator, one guy I want to fight is Kimbo (Slice) and I want to fight in his area. I don’t want it to go to the ground, I want to make a good show for the fans, when I can’t do that then I will stop it.”

Kimbo Slice reacts to Wanderlei Silva’s challenge, and also reveals how he thinks the commissions should allow fighters to take ‘extra vitamins’…

It’s a rare occurrence to see a corner throw in the towel in the modern era of MMA, despite the fact there have been clear cases where it seemed like the right thing to do to save a fighter from an unnecessary beating.

However, there’s a stigma attached to a fight being stopping this way, not to mention confusion among some about the legality of throwing in the towel and fears over how the fighter will react to it, which means that it’s generally just left to either the referee or the fighter themselves to make the final decision on when to call it a day.

That being said, there are times when the towel has been thrown in, both in the ‘dark ages’ of the sport when it was actually one of the few ways to legitimately stop a fight, right up to the modern day.

In this article we’ll highlight some of the most memorable examples of the towel being thrown in (both literally and metaphorically) in the two biggest MMA promotions of all time, UFC and PRIDE.

MMA legends Royce Gracie and Wanderlei Silva will be part of the upcoming Bellator 153 event, just not as active competitors.

Instead, the two will appear at a special “Meet & Greet” for ticket holders on April 22 inside the Mohegan Sun Arena. The event goes down later that night, with Benson Henderson making his Bellator debut vs. Andrey Koreshkov for the welterweight title.

Fans attending “Bellator 153: Koreshkov vs. Henderson” on April 22 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. will be able to meet two of the sport’s most popular athletes: Royce Gracie and Wanderlei Silva.

The highly anticipated event features the debut of Benson “Smooth” Henderson (23-5), as he challenges welterweight champion Andrey Koreshkov (18-1) for his belt. Former featherweight titlist Patricio “Pitbull” Freire (24-3) meets John “Macapa” Teixeira (19-1-2) in the co-main event while other bouts on the card include Connecticut’s own “Irish” Brennan Ward (13-3) and British striking sensation Michael Page (9-0) fighting Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos (20-16) and Jeremie Holloway (7-1) respectively in welterweight attractions.

The name Gracie is synonymous with MMA, and that is largely in part to Royce Gracie, the man who is considered to have invented the sport as we know it today. The winner of the first several UFC events, Gracie would dismantle multiple opponents in a single night, many of whom were much larger than him. For many years there was no answer for the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu technique that he brought into a fight, today, it’s hard to find an MMA fighter who hasn’t trained in the art of jiu-jitsu. This past February, Gracie defeated Ken Shamrock in a record-shattering fight that was witnessed on Spike by over 3.5 million viewers.

Having first fought in the sport almost twenty years ago, very few men have a more legendary resume than Wanderlei Silva, who was recently signed to a Bellator MMA contract. “The Axe Murderer” is a Pride and UFC veteran, who brings an intimidating and imposing presence with him every time he steps into the cage. Silva hopes of adding to an already-impressive list of wins that include: Guy Mezger, Dan Henderson, Kazushi Sakuraba, Ricardo Arona, Kazuyuki Fujita, Michael Bisping, Cung Le, Brian Stann and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson (2x).

Royce Gracie On Ken Shamrock Testing Positive For Steroids: “It Made No Difference”

royce-gracie

When Ken Shamrock was popped for steroids in his drug test for his Bellator 149 fight against Royce Gracie, the MMA world wasn’t exactly shocked. When Royce Gracie himself found out, he didn’t even seem to care.

“I don’t think too much about it,” Gracie told MMAFighting.com when asked about Shamrock’s drug test failure for their long-awaited trilogy fight. “It doesn’t make any difference. It made no difference.”

In 2009, Shamrock also tested positive for steroids after a win over Ross Clifton on a smaller MMA event. Apparently Gracie wasn’t aware of that fact either.

“I don’t follow Shamrock,” he said, “so I didn’t even know he was caught (for steroids) before.”

Regarding the controversy surrounding the finish to their Bellator 149 fight earlier this month, Gracie feels there was no controversy at all. Instead, it was simply a case of Shamrock being Shamrock.

“Shamrock was always famous for complaining and making excuses,” said Gracie. “He was kneed in the stomach, it wasn’t a low blow. I told him after the fight, ‘if you want to complain, complain to the referee’. But when I saw the replay, it wasn’t a low blow. The second knee hit his face and he kind of went out. He was lost, and woke up when he hit the ground.”

Sean Sherk Wants Fight With Royce Gracie In Bellator

sean_sherk

Former UFC Lightweight champion Sean Sherk (36-4-1) is making headlines again after being out of the fight game since 2010. He officially announced his retirement in 2013 but is now having second thoughts and wants another chance to step inside the cage. He wants to fight a specific opponent and went on his personal Facebook to share his thoughts.

“I’ve turned my focus elsewhere setting goals and chasing them but it doesn’t have the same feel, ” Sherk wrote on Facebook. My heart is still with mixed martial arts, if given the opportunity to step in the cage one more time against Royce Gracie I’m going to take it.”

Royce Gracie is coming off of a 1st round TKO victory over Ken Shamrock at Bellator 149. The fight over Shamrock was his first bout in nine years. Bellator has been known to make interesting fights, and a Sherk vs. Gracie fight seems feasible.

Furthermore, Sherk told Sherdog that he has no desire fighting in the UFC.

“I don’t really have any interest in fighting in the UFC. I think there’s a lot more opportunity outside of the UFC organization at this point in time,” Sherk told Sherdog. “I don’t want to be told who I’m going to be sponsored by and make little to no money.”

Sherk was of course referring to the UFC-Reebok sponsorship deal. So fans, what do you think? Could this be a fight people would want to see?
