Controversial welterweight Colby Covington has made quite the name for himself both inside and outside of the cage last year, and this year appears to be no different.

Covington has his sights set on welterweight champion Tyron Woodley, and as usual, he won’t hold back while doing so.

The welterweight contender called Woodley out for ‘race-baiting’ and vows to be the champion the people want (via Submission Radio):

“He let’s things get to his emotions. He’s literally a prima donna. That’s the perfect explanation for Tyron Woodley. He tries to racebait. The people that don’t like him and don’t wanna watch him for or think he’s boring, ‘Oh, they’re racist’. That’s his only claim now.

“So, he’s just trapped, he’s in a corner and he’s defeated before anything. The fans have completely gotten in his head and everybody’s under his skin. He doesn’t know how to handle the position he’s in now, but it’s okay, I’m gonna take over his position as welterweight champ and you will see the division be made great again.”

Covington (13-1) most recently defeated Demian Maia in October and has kept his name in the press ever since. Meanwhile, Woodley himself beat Maia at UFC 214 and is due for a title defense after recovering from shoulder surgery for the torn labrum he suffered in the fight.

However, Covington will have to navigate his way around fellow contenders Rafael Dos Anjos, Santiago Ponzinibbio, and Darren Till in order to get a fight with the champion, and he may just have to face off with surging contender Kamaru Usman before he fights any of them.

Although it may not have gotten the best – or even good – TV ratings, last Saturday night’s (December 16, 2017) UFC on FOX 26 from Winnipeg featured a decent number of bouts containing pivotal rankings implications.

The most obvious move up the lists was made by surging welterweight contender Rafael dos Anjos, who rose two spots up to number two for his five-round dismantling of former champion Robbie Lawler in the main event. “Ruthless” fell two spots to number four for the loss.

But the most shocking and sudden move up the official ranks was made by featherweight Josh Emmett, who made a remarkable debut at number five on the 145-pound ranks after knocking out former No. 3-ranked Ricardo Lamas despite missing weight for the short-notice bout. Emmett could be headed for a huge fight at featherweight, with names like Cub Swanson or Yair Rodriguez perhaps next for him. Lamas dropped three spots to number six.

In other action, rising welterweight Santiago Ponzinibbio rose one spot to number nine following his impressive win over touted knockout slugger Mike Perry in a great fight. The Brazilian contender has quietly racked a strong six-fight win streak in a talented 170-pound arena.

From stunning upset knockouts to barnburners, Saturday night was everything a fight fan could ask for.

5. Josh Emmett Is A FW Contender – But Can He Make Weight?

Josh Emmett earned a career-defining knockout over perennial featherweight contender Ricardo Lamas in the nights co-main event but failed to make weight in doing so.

What does the UFC do with Emmett? Is it even possible for him to make the featherweight limit? He looked huge in there against Lamas, and although he took the fight on short notice, it may be too soon to crown Emmett as the next big thing at 145 pounds.

Let’s see him make weight at least once before pushing him into title contention. However, if he does make the weight, UFC featherweights have a serious problem on their hands in Emmett. His size, striking, and grappling will absolutely pose issues for the top 145 pounders.

A potential future fight against Jose Aldo or Frankie Edgar will accomplish that, as long as Emmett can make the weight.

Two of the talented UFC welterweight division’s most dangerous contenders locked horns when Santiago Ponzinibbio met Mike “Platinum” Perry on the main card of tonight’s (Sat., December 16, 2017) UFC on FOX 26 from the Bell MTS Place in Winnipeg, Canada.

It was billed as an entertaining “Fight of the Night” candidate, and the bout delivered early with Perry landing some big, thudding shots early while “Gente Boa” stayed more technical on the outside with his footwork and accurate jabs.

Perry landed his trademark power shots in the second as well, and indeed Ponznibbio appeared to be in early trouble in the frame. But Ponzinibbio was able to keep up a high pace of low kicks, following it up with some great left hooks, combinations, and a spinning backfist. Perry was in trouble but fought back with big shots at the very end of the frame as it evolved into an all-out war.

The third saw “Platinum” land a good jab to which Ponzinibbio responded with a few of his own. Perry poured it on with a huge shot that rocked Ponzinibbio, but “Gente Boa” dropped him with a picture-perfect spinning backfist to score a much-needed takedown. Perry got up but Ponzinibbio pressed the action against the cage and took Perry down again. The Brazilian contender closed it out with a flurry including a big head kick, and the judges ruled the bout a unanimous decision in favor of Ponzinibbio.
