Ask any professional fighter and they’ll tell you the same thing – injuries are inevitable in MMA.

No-one who goes toe-to-toe in the cage is going to emerge unscathed, and it’s an all-too-common occurrence for pro fighters to be dealing with niggling injuries on an ongoing basis, while most will have had spells where they’ve had to go under the knife or sit on the sidelines for months at a time due to more serious ailments.

In the majority of cases these are not career-threatening issues, but as you’ll read in this article, there are some stars who have had to face up to the possibility that they may lose their livelihood due to brutal injuries they’ve sustained either in competition, in training, or sometimes just in their normal everyday lives away from the cage.

We’ll also take a look at rare examples of fighters who have been competing for years, only to suddenly discover that they have an underlying medical condition that could bring their career to an abrupt halt.

At times it’s tough to read what these guys have gone through, but this the reality of being a fighter, and nobody who sets foot in the Octagon emerges unscathed.

Over the course of its 23 years in existence, the UFC has become the ultimate proving ground in the sport of Mixed Martial Arts, building a rich history along the way.

With that in mind, we decided it would be a good idea to delve deep into the record books in search of some of the greatest accomplishments in the Octagon over the years, including discovering which fighter enjoyed the longest title reign, who compiled the longest winning streak, and who’s knocked out more opponents than anybody else in the history of the sport.

We’ll also look at other record breakers too, so if you’ve ever wondered who the tallest fighter to ever set foot in the Octagon was, who was the oldest (hint: it’s not Randy Couture), or just want to know who banked the biggest pay cheque, then we’ve got you covered!

According to a report by MMA Fighting, two more bouts have been set for UFC 204, as Jimi Manuwa takes on Ovince Saint Preux and Stefan Struve battles Ruslan Magomedov.

Manuwa (15-2) has yet to fight this year as he has been recovering from an injury. In his last appearance, he was knocked out by top contender Anthony Johnson.

Saint Preux (19-8) stepped in on short notice and fought Jon Jones for the interim UFC light heavyweight title in April, losing via decision. He has recovered from a broken arm suffered early in that fight.

Struve (27-8) knocked out Antonio Silva in 16 seconds this past May, while Magomedov (14-1) is on a nine-fight win streak.

UFC 204 takes place October 8 from England and is expected to feature Michael Bisping defending his middleweight belt vs. Dan Henderson.

UFC heavyweight contender Antonio ‘Bigfoot’ Silva had a pretty rough night at UFC Rotterdam this past Sunday (May 8, 2016). He faced fellow heavyweight giant Stefan Struve in the evening’s co-main event, in what proved to be a very quick and brutal fight for the Brazilian. After rushing in on the initial exchanges, Silva got caught with a nice two-piece combo before eating a knee to the chin that appeared to take his legs out from under him. As the fight went to the ground, Silva’s head was left exposed as he looked to take Struve down, and ‘The Skyscraper’ rained down elbows in the style of Travis Browne to get the stoppage.

Silva instantly appealed the KO loss, which officially came in at 16 seconds in the first round, but the referee’s stoppage was now in the books. Struve celebrated the victory, erasing the memory of his frustrating decision loss to Jared Rosholt at UFC 193 last November, but it was disappointing at best for the fallen Brazilian Bigfoot.

A tough loss to swallow, and the second of the sort in a row for Silva, as he drops to five KO losses in the last seven outings. There was a lot of talk about possible retirement for Bigfoot among fans, but the giant Brazilian heavyweight who holds wins over Alistair Overeem, Fedor Emelianenko and many other big names wasn’t making any announcements regarding the subject of his future.

But there’s been something else going on behind the scenes featuring Silva’s following in his native Brazil. It looks as though many of his home country’s fans have begun to turn tides on the well travelled MMA veteran, and it has infuriated Silva to the point he’s gone on a wild rant over social media.
