Renowned boxing trainer Teddy Atlas has predicted how a blockbuster crossover showdown between UFC Heavyweight Champion Francis Ngannou and WBC and The Ring titleholder Tyson Fury would play out.

Tyson Fury’s stock in the boxing world further rose last weekend. For the third time, he met Deontay Wilder inside the ring. The pair first clashed At Los Angeles’ Staples Center in 2018. The bout ended in a controversial split-decision draw, setting the stage for a 2020 rematch. When they ran it back in Las Vegas, it was “The Gypsy King” who left the ring with the belts after securing a seventh-round TKO.

Despite targeting a huge match against his compatriot Anthony Joshua, Fury was forced to grant “The Bronze Bomber” a contractually obliged trilogy fight. On October 9, the heavyweight stars collided inside the T-Mobile Arena. After trading knockdowns, Fury secured the knockout win in the penultimate round. The fight was praised as one of the best in recent memory.

While Fury will likely face the mandatory challenger Dillian Whyte next, should he defeat Otto Wallin later this month, and has the unification challenge of fellow champion Oleksandr Usyk lying in wait, talks of a potential crossover clash still float around “The Gypsy King.”

Earlier this year, Fury suggested he would fight the UFC Heavyweight Champion following bouts against Wilder and Joshua. “The Predator” has also been open to the potential battle of behemoths in the past. With the likes of Conor McGregor, Vitor Belfort, and Anderson Silva all crossing over to the ring in the past, a fight between Fury and Ngannou isn’t that far-fetched.

During a recent appearance on Submission Radio, boxing personality Teddy Atlas gave his take on the potential MMA vs. boxing contest. In his mind, there’s no debate over who would have the edge inside the squared circle.

“I think the making of that is really all based on money. Let’s be honest with ourselves, if it’s not gonna be based on MMA rules, if it’s gonna be with boxing rules, the guy who’s been boxing since he was 12 years old, the guy who’s had 200 amateur fights, the guy who’s trained in a gym for all those years to be a top boxer, he’s gonna have a huge edge, maybe an insurmountable edge to be quite frank.”

Despite the likely uncompetitive nature of the matchup, Atlas believes the demand for it would be there amongst fans and pundits. He thinks that’s because they like to make themselves believe the mixed martial artist, or lesser experienced boxer, has a puncher’s chance, similar to the build-up to Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather.

“We probably fool ourselves because we want to fool ourselves. We want to be entertained, we want to believe it… If you’re gonna support this fight, you wanna believe that the big monster from Cameroon can land a punch and knock the guy cold, even though he’s an MMA fighter and not a boxer… How often does a guy who’s not as developed, not nearly as developed as the top fighter, how many times have we really seen where he’s got a puncher’s edge… not too often.

“It would be a big money fight. Would it be competitive? Most likely not… Fury is a pretty complete package, besides having the advantage of years and years of boxing training.”

Before considering a venture to the ring, Ngannou will have his hands full at UFC 270 when he faces Interim UFC Heavyweight Champion Ciryl Gane. The pair, who have trained together at Paris’ MMA factory in the past, will headline the opening pay-per-view of 2022. “Bon Gamin” recently suggested he’ll look to replicate Tyson Fury’s victory over powerhouse Wilder when he takes on the champion.

Should “The Predator” successfully unify the titles, and see off the likely challenges of Stipe Miocic and Jon Jones, perhaps a crossover showdown with “The Gypsy King” will await him soon after.

How do you think UFC Heavyweight Champion Francis Ngannou would fare against WBC Heavyweight Champion Tyson Fury?

Teddy Atlas predicts that Jake Paul will win via knockout against former UFC Welterweight Champion Tyron Woodley.

The YouTuber looks to keep his record perfect and improve to 4-0 this Sunday.

Atlas believes that Paul has the mental advantage against a “shot” fighter in Woodley.

“I like Woodley…he’s maybe the greatest Welterweight Champion of all time in the UFC. I mean, he’s that special.,” Atlas said on the latest episode of his podcast THE FIGHT with Teddy Atlas. “Woodley’s 39 years old, he lost his last 4 fights and lost them by KO and submission… he’s shot.”

That isn’t the only advantage Atlas believes Paul has over Woodley. The boxing pundit is also convinced that Paul has the physical advantage over a smaller Woodley as well.

“He’s (Woodley) going to be the smaller guy, the lighter guy. Paul’s the bigger guy. He’s strong. He has that advantage and he got the opportunity to throw, which is a decent right hand that he possesses. He got the opportunity to throw it and land it because of the mistakes of Woodley. He stands straight up and is predictable.”

Atlas explained that Woodley’s jab is what will be the downfall of him in the fight and allows Paul to time it easily and land that big right hand he possesses.

Atlas went on to compare Paul to Floyd Mayweather for how he picks his opponents in such a smart fashion. Atlas explained that Paul, “Picked this fight for a reason and because he can sell it.”

Paul, so far in his boxing career has fought a YouTuber, a retired NBA fighter, and an MMA fighter known for his wrestling.

Atlas admires the two fighters and even enjoys the spectacle that they will be putting on for viewers around the world.

“Sometimes it’s about capturing the people’s imagination and I know the imagination goes bonkers. It goes coo-coo, coo-coo for Cocoa Puffs.”

Do you agree with Teddy Atlas? Will Jake Paul KO Tyron Woodley on August 29?

The debate and discussion regarding Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor has reached new heights, and recently one of boxing’s big name trainers weighed-in on the contest.

That trainer is Teddy Atlas, who helped coach Mike Tyson when he was a teenager, and was a driving force behind the success of former heavyweight champ, Michael Moorer. More recently, Atlas has worked with Timothy Bradley, who took out Brandon Rios with him in his corner. Atlas has also spent time as an analyst and commentator.

Well, following the news that Mayweather and McGregor will box on August 26th, Atlas appeared on ESPN to discuss the massive fight.  While doing so, Atlas had this to say about McGregor and his chances of scoring a win, over the undefeated Mayweather (quotes via MMA Fighting):

“At the end of the day, myself, most boxing people that have been around the business think it’s a caveman in there with a defensive genius,” Atlas said. “And usually cavemen don’t win those matches, because in this case they’re not allowed to bring a club. Even if he brought a club, you know what? There would be a lot of strikes. I don’t think that he’d be catching Floyd too easily with that.”

“You got a guy, that yeah he’s a good striker,” Atlas added. “He might be one of the better strikers in the MMA world, I don’t know. I don’t rate him that way. But in the boxing world, he’s a ‘C’ class fighter. And I’m not knocking him. Because if it’s MMA rules he wins. Because he comes in low, he gets under his legs, he gets him on the ground, he ground and pounds, he grapples and Floyd’s got no chance. But strictly standing, you know Marquess of Queensberry Rules? Nuh uh. Not happening.”

Now, while McGregor supporters and his camp likely won’t care for these comments, Atlas isn’t the only one who’s made this argument. Sure, they might not have referred to McGregor as “C class”, but in the boxing community, it certainly doesn’t seem like any pundits are expecting this to be a competitive bout. In fact, amongst most MMA experts, the pre-fight narrative is pretty similar.

As Atlas noted, we’re talking about one of the greatest defensive boxers ever in Mayweather, who will face McGregor in an environment where he can only throw punches. Where his feared left hand will be padded by a 10 ounce glove…So, landing that big, KO punch is going to be tough sledding.
