Thiago Silva claims strike he received Chelsea would not be allowed in the UFC

Chelsea center half, Thiago Silva has hit out at fellow Brazilian international, Vinicius, claiming a strike to the back of the head – resembling almost a rabbit punch during their match last night against Fulham in the Premier League, claiming such a strike would not even fly in the UFC or in mixed martial arts.

English Premier League side, Chelsea managed to register just their second league win of the season from seven matches this campaign last night at Craven Cottage against fellow London-side, Fulham – with goals from Mykalio Mudryk and Armando Broja enough to see off the home side in the second half.

However, controversy surrounded an incident involving the above-mentioned, Thiago Silva and his compatriot, Fulham forward, Vinicius whilst the two were contesting for a loose pass.

Chasing the ball down, Vinicius appeared to strike Silva in the back of his neck with what almost appeared to be a rabbit punch, sending the former AC Milan and Paris Saint Germain central defender to the pitch in agony.

And despite calls for the VAR (Video Assistant Referee) to look into the incident with the view of possibly dismissing Vinicius from the remainder of the match and issuing him with a red card, the Brazilian emerged unpunished.

Thiago Silva claims last night’s incident would not even be allowed in the UFC

Taking issue with the incident, Brazil international, Thiago Silva hit out on social media, noting his knowledge of the unified ruleset of mixed martial arts – claiming such a blow to the back of an opponent’s head would not be allowed in the sport.

“This is not even allowed in the UFC,” Thiago Silva posted on his official Instagram story. “But it’s cool.”

Eagle FC

Khabib Nurmagomedov’s Eagle FC has announced three new high-profile signings.

On Wednesday, ESPN confirmed that former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos had inked a deal with the promotion. He’ll make his opposite Yorgan De Castro on May 20.

It was also revealed that Thiago Silva had signed with Eagle FC and would be making his debut on the same night in the co-main event against Hector Lombard.

Dos Santos suffered four consecutive knockout losses before being released by the UFC in 2021. The Brazilian was expected to make his first post-UFC appearance at Triller Triad Combat 2 against Kubrat Pulev on February 26 but the event was called off due to concerns about COVID-19.

Lombard will be returning to MMA for the first time in six years when he squares off against Silva in May. The Bellator champion hasn’t competed in the sport since suffering a decision loss to Thales Leites in September 2018, his sixth straight defeat. Lombard has been more active and more successful in bare-knuckle boxing as of late.

Silva exited the UFC in October 2013 following a unanimous decision win over Matt Hamill. Since then, he’s fought for numerous MMA promotions and has been pretty inconsistent with his performances. Silva is currently riding a two-fight losing streak and hasn’t fought since May 2019.

Eagle FC Keep Signing UFC Veterans

Khabib’s approach to acquiring talent seems very clear at this point. The lightweight legend appears to be picking up UFC veterans who have a big name. Diego Sanchez, Kevin Lee, Rashad Evans, Ray Borg, Impa Kasanganay, and Irwin Rivera are just some of the names already signed for Eagle FC.

Will you be watching Eagle FC 20 on May 20 after hearing Junior dos Santos, Thiago Silva and Hector Lombard will be competing on the card?

10 MMA Fighters Who Wasted Their Careers

These 10 fighters had the MMA world in the palm of their hands but wasted it away.

What if the last day you have on earth, the person you became met the person you could have become?

It’s a heavy question, but if you are honest with yourself, it’s an excellent barometer to gauge how fulfilling and productive your life was, or could’ve been. One of the saddest things in life is seeing wasted talent, or worse yet, watching someone self-destruct right before your eyes.

This scenario seems to play itself out time and time again in sports and is an equal opportunity destroyer of lives. Take John Daly, Darryl Strawberry, and Ryan Leaf for instance. All three of these athletes wasted their careers away to varying degrees and never came close to reaching their perceived ceiling. Unfortunately, mixed martial arts (MMA) is no different when it comes to athletes wasting their careers away.

This year, the sport celebrated its silver anniversary. In that time the growing number of fighters who have squandered otherwise promising careers is staggering. We here at LowkickMMA compiled a list of the 10 fighters who wasted their careers away.

The list starts here, enjoy:

Jon Jones

We start the list off with none other than decorated-yet-troubled former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones.

Jones is still in the process of writing his story, but if history has shown us anything, it’s that athletes that continually mess up usually continue to self-destruct unless a comprehensive lifestyle intervention takes place.

“Bones” makes this list because he is perhaps the best and most recent example of an MMA fighter wasting their potential away. Once considered the unquestioned greatest of all time, Jones is, unfortunately, more likely the butt of a joke than in the running for the GOAT conversation nowadays.

Jones won the UFC light heavyweight championship on two occasions; he would also become the first fighter in company history to be stripped of the same title both times.

Couple that with “Bones” well-documented controversies that include a hit-and-run involving a pregnant woman, multiple failed drug tests, and a seemingly never-ending stream of generally head-scratching outside-the-cage trouble, and it’s no wonder Jones makes the list of fighters that wasted their careers.

Kevin Randleman’s Fake Penis

If nothing else, the late Kevin Randleman gets an A for effort when it comes to his wacky attempt to cheat the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC)’s urine test when PRIDE hosted a rare event outside of Japan in Las Vegas back in 2006.

“[Randleman] basically used a fake penis, put on a pair of bike shorts, had a cup and came in to take pre-fight urine,” Former NSAC director Keith Kizer recalled in an interview with Reuters.

“He lifted up the leg of shorts, took out the fake penis and did the test. We checked on temperature, sent it to a lab, and we found it was fake urine.”

NSAC banned Randleman from fighting for a year as a result of the incident, but his actions also ended up impacting on every other fighter’s privacy from that point onwards.

”We said ‘look, now you guys have to pull down your shorts so that whoever is administering the test can see everything,” Kizer said of their efforts to stop something like this happening again in the future.
