It Looks Like Michael Bisping and Tim Kennedy Might *Finally* Have a Date Set for Their Grudge Match

(Kelsoburn.gif via Kennedy’s twitter.)

For what has felt like years now, middleweight contenders Michael Bisping and Tim Kennedy have been locked in a (revolutionary?) Twitter war, throwing petty and occasionally hilarious insults at one another like the sweet burn seen above. For a while, the dispute held about as much credibility as your average internet argument, as neither man seemed truly willing to sign on the dotted line. With Bisping out nursing an ironic eye injury and Kennedy busy picking off Brazilians like they were members of Al Qaeda, the digital back and forth quickly began to lose steam amongst MMA fans with Twitter accounts and unlimited free time.

Earlier this month, however, Bisping was cleared by his doctor to resume fighting and was immediately offered a bout with Kennedy. Yesterday morning, Fox Sports broke the news that Kennedy and Bisping have finally set a tentative date for their grudge match: April 16th, at the TUF Nations finale (no, I don’t know what the fuck a TUF Nations is either). Kennedy confirmed the matchup via his Twitter, and barring the results of Bisping’s upcoming tests with the UFC’s doctors, this fight is all but a lock. At the risk of sounding jingoistic…(*clears throat*)…USA! USA! USA!!

At the risk of sounding jingoistic…(*clears throat*)…USA! USA! USA!!

As previously mentioned, Bisping has been out of action since picking up a technical decision win over Alan Belcher in *their* grudge match at UFC 159. As is typically the case in a Bisping grudge match, the fight featured its fair share of eye pokes, taunts, and probably a loogie or two. Kennedy, on the other hand, recently scored a first round knockout over Rafael Natal at Fight for the Troops 3 back in November, improving his UFC record to 2-0. Natal has yet to confirm or deny whether loogies were hocked during the main event matchup.

Will this be a slugfest for the ages, Nation? Or will Kennedy vs. Bisping suffer the same fate as the last great supposed grudge match, MacDonald vs. Ellenberger, and suck beyond all belief?

Tim Kennedy Was Apparently Not the Biggest Fan of Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela died yesterday, marking the end of a life lauded as inspirational and heroic by millions around the world. The first black president of South Africa, Mandela is hailed as a central figure in the fight against apartheid and its brutal legacy of racial segregation.

In case it needs to be mentioned, Mandela was not American, and as such, not all of his beliefs reflected traditional American values. He publicly supported Fidel Castro and Moammar Gadhafi, and was a ferocious critic of American foreign policy. By definition, he was a revolutionary, determined to tear down existing social structures in his home country. He wasn’t one of those non-violent types, either. The militant group that Mandela co-founded, Umkhonto we Sizwe, carried out guerrilla attacks that were aimed at government targets but resulted in numerous civilian deaths.

Maybe you didn’t know that stuff; the darker pages of Mandela’s story certainly aren’t emphasized in mainstream eulogies of his life. On the other hand, you can be an American patriot and still respect Mandela for the life he led, his indomitable spirit, the battles he fought and won for human justice. The world is a better, fairer place today because he existed.

The world is a better, fairer place today because he existed.

That’s why this tweet from UFC fighter Tim Kennedy bothered me. It dismisses all of Mandela’s accomplishments, on the grounds that his views on social justice didn’t completely mirror America’s. He’s a commie at heart, so he can’t be a hero.

Mandela’s death has inspired all sorts of questionable reactions on the Internet, ranging from the horrfying to the merely idiotic, and that’s fine. Everybody’s entitled to his or her opinion. (And we should probably include the mandatory disclaimer that Tim Kennedy is a hero in his own right.) But which part of Mandela’s life should he be remembered for? And what would the world look like without him?

Tim Kennedy Takes Shot at Both Vitor Belfort and Dan Henderson

UFC Fight Night 31 winner Tim Kennedy is one of the sport’s most outspoken personalities when it comes to testosterone replacement therapy. Therefore, he naturally had something to say about the UFC Fight Night 32 main event between Dan Henderson and Vitor Belfort.

Saturday night’s even headliners are both longtime users of TRT, and as Kennedy has told Bleacher Report in the past, the controversial treatment has no place in the sport.

As a result, it should come as no surprise that he couldn’t resist taking a shot at the two fight veterans when making his bout predictions.

The Greg Jackson’s MMA Fighter—who is No. 10 in the UFC’s official middleweight rankings following his knockout of Rafael Natal—was originally offered to fight “The Phenom” at the event.

However, Belfort turned the matchup down, stating he wasn’t fighting at middleweight again until a title was on the line, per MMA Fighting

Since losing a Strikeforce title bout to Luke Rockhold in July of last year, Kennedy has rattled off three straight wins – 2 inside the Octagon – and appears to be priming himself for a grudge match with Michael Bisping.

During an appearance on Ariel Helwani’s The MMA Hour, Henderson indicated that he doesn’t mind discontinuing TRT for a few months at a time, while Belfort has maintained his stance that he has never abused the treatment

Belfort has been a frequent target of Kennedy’s online taunts, so it is unlikely he will have anything to say this time around, but it will be intriguing to see if Henderson responds to the slight directed at him.

Poor Tim Kennedy tore his quadriceps muscle prior to his Nov. 6 bout with Rafael Natal in the most unlikely of ways. He wasn’t caught in a leg lock. He didn’t deliver a bad kick. Rather, he sacrificed his health for an old lady.

Per MMA Fighting

“I tore my quad coming into this camp,” Kennedy told the media at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. “The very last week of fight camp, just a stupid thing happened. A lady walked over the track and it was either run over a 65-year-old lady – probably kill her – or try to decelerate in about two meters. I chose to decelerate and just fell to the ground, grabbing my leg screaming not great words.”

Despite the injured quadriceps, Kennedy defeated his opponent Rafael Natal by knockout at 4:40 in the first round.

Hat tip to Bloody Elbow.

‘UFC Fight for the Troops 3? Video Highlights: Tim Kennedy Scores a Knockout for America, Rustam Khabilov Tries Some Spinnin’ Sh*t + More

(Kennedy vs. Natal finish, via YouTube.com/FoxSports)

Despite the enthusiastic and supportive Fort Campbell crowd, last night’s Fight for the Troops 3 event began with some bitter defeats for the handful of UFC fighters with military backgrounds. Army Staff Sgt./TUF 16 winner Colton Smith kicked off the main card by tapping to a rear-naked choke from TUF 15 winner Michael Chiesa — which earned Chiesa a $50,000 Submission of the Night bonus — while former Marine Liz Carmouche ate her second UFC defeat in a decision loss to Alexis Davis.

Luckily, Tim Kennedy saved the operation. The Special Forces vet fed off the energy in the room and tagged Rafael Natal with a long left hook that put the Brazilian’s lights out near the end of round 1, and won Kennedy a $50,000 Knockout of the Night bump. As he explained after the fight:

I had to wait for the crowd to stop cheering because I was afraid to emotionally commit to something and not do it for the right reasons,” he said. “They’re screaming, ‘Ranger up! Ranger up!’ And I want to start throwing overhands and blitz the guy. I was waiting for them to stop, and they didn’t stop. Then they started cheering ‘U-S-A!,’ and ‘Kennedy!,’ and I was like, ‘For the love of God.’

It had a negative effect on me because I was waiting and apprehensive. If there was any amount of pressure that could be put on a single fighter for a fight, I can’t think of a situation that would be more stressful than this.

By the way, Kennedy tore his quad in the last week of training camp, but as he told Ariel Helwani later, “There’s no way you’re getting me off this card. They would have had to shoot me. If they had to roll me up with a wheelchair, I would have got in that cage, I didn’t care.”
