UFC veteran Nate Diaz made headlines last night when he posted on Instagram that he was aiming to return this May or June.

Diaz has been out of action since his majority decision loss to Conor McGregor at August 2016’s UFC 202, but that didn’t stop two top-ranked lightweights from calling him out for a potential fight.

It’s unlikely Diaz would accept an offer to meet either of those combatants, however, as he’s made it clear he’ll only return for his highly-publicized (and lucrative) trilogy match with archrival “Notorious,” and only for a massive payday if he does. But that’s not going to stop the UFC from offering the popular Stockton slugger from a fight, as UFC president Dana White told TMZ Sports that he would offer Diaz a fight right away when asked about his comeback:

“I’ll tell ya what. I’ll call him today and make him an offer. I will make Nate Diaz an offer to fight today.

“I gotta look at the rankings and see where everybody is.”

As for which fight he’s going to offer Diaz, White said it most likely won’t be a trilogy match with McGregor because he believes fans want to see ‘The Notorious’ meet the winner of UFC 223’s Ferguson vs. Nurmagomedov – and well, they can do McGregor vs. Diaz III at ‘any time’:

“I think people would rather see Conor come back and either fight Tony [Ferguson] or Khabib [Nurmagomedov] — whoever wins — and the Nate Diaz fight isn’t going anywhere. We can do that thing any time.”

It may be a bit of a stretch to say the UFC can do McGregor vs. Diaz III at ‘any time’ considering the overall uncertainty present that McGregor will even fight in the UFC again after his reported $100 million payday to box Floyd Mayweather last August.

With confusion abound at 155 pounds, the UFC would most likely be lucky to get McGregor back in the octagon to fight the winner of Ferguson vs. Nurmagomedov given the recent circumstances.

That would leave Diaz to fight a lower – albeit elite – level of an opponent, something he’s most likely not willing to do.

Stay tuned to see if Diaz accepts White’s offer.

On April 7, 2018 in Brooklyn, New York, Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov will finally do battle in the main event of UFC 223 from the Barclays, Center.

The two lightweight titans have been scheduled to meet multiple times before, but injuries have always forced the UFC to scrap the bout. Now, however, both men appear to be healthy, and fight fans can only hope that remains the case as fight night nears.

And if the two do indeed finally enter the Octagon together, Ferguson, who currently carries the interim lightweight title, will be gunning for a finish akin to that of a former heavyweight champion boxer:

“I’m going to f*cking go Mike Tyson on this b*tch,” Ferguson said on a recent edition of The MMA Hour. “Go back and watch my old footage, man. Go back and watch my old fights. I knocked people out at 170 pounds. I’ve seen Khabib, I think he was wearing platform shoes when we were over there facing off. That dude has an issue if he’s trying to compensate like that, so he’s already lost. So I’m going to finish this guy in distinct fashion.

“I’m not going to try to hurt him too much. I mean, I think we’re past that point of animosity where we needed so much anger to f*cking train for this. Hopefully, we can have some fun and be a little bit more lighthearted in camp so nobody gets injured. Please, AKA, don’t hurt your f*cking boy, because you guys are notorious for that sh*t, and show up and make some weight. I know you have the world’s best weight-cutting guy besides myself, because I’m number-f*cking-one. So show up, dude, do your sh*t, and let’s have a good fight.”

That will certainly be a tough task, however, as Nurmagomedov has never lost in his professional career let alone be finished. The Dagestan native is one of the best wrestlers the sport’s ever seen and he holds a perfect 25-0 record, most recently dishing out a one-sided beating against Edson Barboza at UFC 219 last month.

Ferguson, meanwhile, also appears to be in the prime of his career, as he’s won an impressive 10 straight bouts. He’ll look to continue that winning streak come April, and he said it’d be nice to see Nurmagomedov ‘wincing in pain on the ground where he belongs’:

“It would be nice to finish Khabib via liver shots, wouldn’t it? I just want to see him wincing in pain on the ground where he belongs,” Ferguson said.

MMA fans anxiously awaiting Nate Diaz’s UFC return may have gotten the best news they have in months this evening.

That is if you’re to believe Diaz’ post on Instagram hinting that he was ‘tired of waiting’ for the ‘f**kers’ in his division to figure it out, so he would be back in a short time.

The UFC could certainly use the popular and polarizing personality, whose rivalry with absent lightweight champion Conor McGregor is arguably the most popular in MMA history.

But with the UFC 155-pound weight class stagnating with McGregor inactive, Diaz called out his lightweight foes for being boring. Check it out:

Sick of sitting around waiting for you fuckers to do shit there’s no excitement in this fight shit step your games up I’ll see u around may,June.
Sincerely The Real Champ”

The ‘f**kers’ he’s referring to are the top-ranked competitors in the UFC lightweight division, a supremely skilled class currently held up by the uncertainty of McGregor’s motivation to defend his title.

Interim champion Tony Ferguson will finally fight top-ranked Khabib Nurmagomedov at April 7’s UFC 223 in New York, but even the competitors themselves don’t know if it will be for the interim or actual undisputed championship as the UFC drags their feet.

Putting the Stockton slugger back into the mix would only further complicate things, although his once-red-hot rivalry with McGregor has cooled significantly with the two participating in only one MMA fight combined since their second meeting at August 2016’s UFC 202, which McGregor won by close majority decision.

It’s largely believed McGregor will now defend his title against the winner of Ferguson vs. Khabib, but nothing is clear. Could Diaz pull the ultimate slide-in once again and get his oft-rumored trilogy fight out of nowhere?

Fight Fans are not alone in being confused about the situation leading into UFC 223.

Fans, media, and even fighters do not know if Tony Ferguson vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov would be for the UFC’s official lightweight title or the interim title that Ferguson holds.

The UFC didn’t make it known when they announced this bout or at the introductory UFC 223 press conference last Friday in Boston.

UFC president Dana White has refused to reveal what the situation is. He has also not given an update on UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor but has said in the past that he would be stripped of the belt if he doesn’t defend it soon.

Keep in mind that the last time McGregor fought under the UFC banner was back at UFC 205 in November of 2016 when he won the lightweight title from Eddie Alvarez in the main event.

Ferguson has voiced his frustration about the confusion involving this bout, and he has every right to be upset considering he is on a 10 fight winning streak and should be fighting McGregor next.

“Yeah, it bothers me. It bothers the sh*t out of me, dude,” Ferguson admitted Monday on The MMA Hour. “Straight up. I’m the f*cking champ and we don’t know if we’re fighting for the real belt or not. What the f*ck is that? Dana White is telling us one thing on one [side] of the curtain and on the other side he’s saying, ‘No, Conor McGregor is the champion. Go and do your homework.’ And I love Dana, man, but I’m like, ‘What the f*ck, dude? Am I not the champ or am I the champ? Do you want to hype me up or do you not want to hype me up for this fight?’”

“As far as what they told me in the contract, that’s what they were telling me. They were saying, ‘Look, you guys are fighting for the undisputed title,’” Ferguson said. “That was right before they told me that I was going to fight Conor McGregor. And then just a whole bunch of sh*t just went down, and I was like, ‘You know what, I have a manager to help me deal with this.’ But in speculation, what happened was they offered me a fighter that didn’t want to fight. I don’t know if it was a contract issue or what it was, but the dude didn’t seem interested. He doesn’t seem interested, to the public and to anybody else, to defend his belt.

“Management presented me with the opportunity and the contract, and they told me the benefits and the negatives if I was going to sign up for it, and then I was like, ‘Well sh*t man, is this b*tch going to even sign up?’ They were like, ‘Probably not. Nope. He’s too busy,’ or some bullsh*t, whatever. Not even in their words.”

Ferguson also brought up the fact that it was difficult to get a real answer about this situation from UFC officials and White in regards to the belt that they are competing for come UFC 223.

“It was almost like they were kind of embarrassed to ask or to be questioned,” Ferguson said “They didn’t know what the f*ck was going on. It was kind of like, ‘Well sh*t, what’s going on?’

“Look, I understand that there’s business, and there’s probably big business to have to do with McGregor, but that has nothing to do with myself or my family. He does not make our world go around, that’s what I’m trying to say. I have 10 fights in a row that I have won via my coaches and my teammates and my family, not even in that order. Even before that, I knocked out everybody at 170 pounds. I’m a fight finisher. I’m a fan pleaser. And I go out there and I make people bloody. I’m the worst nightmare for anybody that steps inside that Octagon, and I am the f*cking champ.”

“Trust me, this whole situation … it kinda sucks,” Ferguson said. “But I’ve been excited about this fight for a very long time. I don’t want to fight against somebody that doesn’t want to fight, as I’ve said before. But once the fight was decided and my opponent was given, my main focus is on the guy in front of me. To me, this is the real fight, this is for the real belt. I’m the current champ. I might not always be given the respect that I should have, but it’s what fuels me. I can’t be ignored forever, and I’m going to derail this hype train. I’m going to clip that eagle’s wings.”

UFC 223 is slated to take place on Saturday, April 7 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET while the preliminary card will air on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass.

Interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson will be finally fighting Khabib Nurmagomedov at April’s UFC 223 from Brooklyn, but he claims that wasn’t the original idea.

Ferguson revealed at today’s UFC 25th Anniversary Series press conference from Boston that Conor McGregor was offered a fight against him, but he declined to do so. McGregor hasn’t fought or defended his title since winning it in 2016:

“Well they offered me Conor; Conor didn’t want to fight. So I wanna fight people that actually wanna sit there and fight, I’m not gonna beg somebody to go there and fight.

“This is the real belt; I’ve fought 10 fights. You guys all watched ’em. If not, you’re a casual. Go watch my fights, you’ll see exactly why I have this belt. I am the champ.”

“El Cucuy” stated that McGregor’s time was done and he was actually defending ‘his’ title to predictable boos from the many McGregor fans:

“Conor McNuggets is nothing, he’s lost his sauce. And this is defend or vacate. This is, right here, I’m defending my belt. My belt, I’m defending.”

Also at the press conference, UFC president Dana White didn’t say McGregor was stripped of the title but did provide a confusing bit of runaround by claiming Ferguson Vs. Nurmagomedov would be for the real lightweight title.

“I have no update. The winner of Khabib-Ferguson will be the champion.

“They’re going to fight for the real title. This is the real title. I said that Conor can’t hold up the title for two years.”

If what White says is true, the ‘real’ lightweight champion will be determined at UFC 223 in April, yet we’ve seen him say one thing and do the exact opposite or many more than one occasion. Ferguson won the interim belt after submitting Kevin Lee at UFC 216 while McGregor has remained MIA.

McGregor’s coach John Kavanagh has been doing his best to keep “The Notorious’” name in the mix; however, there has been no word or confirmation on McGregor’s next fight, or if he will fight again at all. McGregor notoriously made nearly $100 million in his boxing bout with Floyd Mayweather in August, and is financially set  for the foreseeable future.

Do you believe McGregor turned down a fight with Ferguson? If so, does he deserve to be stripped of the title?
