19-year-old phenom “Super” Sage Northcutt has received a huge backing from the UFC since his debut just a few months back at UFC 192 in October, with the promotion obviously sensing a massive amount of potential in him.

After running through Francisco Trevino in just 57 seconds, Northcutt scored a second round submission over Cody Pfister at December 10’s UFC Fight Night 80 from Las Vegas.

After scoring two straight victories, “Super” Sage was ready for his third bout last night (January 30, 2016), as he took on late replacement Bryan Barberena on the main card of UFC on FOX 18.

Northcutt finally hit a road block, however, suffering a second round submission loss. In the aftermath of the setback, the Texas native has received quite a bit of criticism, even from some fellow fighters.

Surging lightweight contender Tony “El Cucuy” Ferguson took to his official twitter account to take a shot at a downed Northcutt:

While some took the chance to pepper “Super” Sage, others were there to defend him, specifically No. 2-ranked 155 pounder Khabib “The Eagle” Nurmagomedov, who just so happens to be scheduled to meet Ferguson at April’s UFC on FOX 19.

Nurmagomedov fired back at “El Cucuy”, calling him a “jealous bum”:

In the end, Ferguson would drop one more insult towards “The Eagle” and his notorious injury issues:

While Northcutt obviously has some holes to fill, he still has a long future ahead of him in the sport of mixed martial arts.

Do you see the young star bouncing back from the loss?

UFC 197 is set to go down live on pay per view (PPV) March 5, 2016 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, and it appears as if the UFC is stacking the deck.

Headlined by a super fight between Irish superstar and featherweight champion Conor McGregor and defending lightweight boss Rafael dos Anjos, the card will also play host to the first defense of Holly Holm’s newly captured bantamweight title as she takes on former Strikeforce queen Miesha Tate.

The main attraction won’t be the only pivotal lightweight bout taking place on the card, however, as Brian Martin of the Los Angeles Daily News has reported that surging contender and No. 5-ranked Tony “El Cucuy” Ferguson will meet No. 7-ranked Michael Johnson:

Ferguson has put together a super impressive seven fight win streak which includes five finishes. Coming off of an impressive submission victory over lethal striker Edson Barboza, “El Cucuy” will look to continue his journey towards a title shot.

Johnson on the other hand, was riding a four fight win streak of his own, but has recently hit some tough times. Dropping an extremely controversial split-decision loss to Beniel Dariush last August, “The Menace” was most recently seen dropping a more one sided decision loss to the returning Nate Diaz last month.

He will look to get back to his winning ways and look to take out one of the division’s hottest talents.

These two men have actually met once before as well, with Johnson scoring a unanimous decision victory back in 2012.

UFC 197 is shaping up to be one of the year’s most exciting cards. Stay tuned to LowKickMMA for all news surrounding the event as it nears closer.

The UFC lightweight division has been taken by storm as featherweight champion Conor McGregor will be moving up to meet 155-pound boss Rafael dos Anjos at March 5’s UFC 197 from Las Vegas, Nevada.

Top contenders Anthony “Showtime” Pettis and Eddie Alvarez also just recently did battle in a pivotal fight at last Sunday’s (January 17, 2016) UFC Fight Night 81.

In the midst of all of this madness, however, we cannot forget about undefeated top contender Khabib “The Eagle” Nurmagomedov.

The 22-0 Dagestani-born wrestler has been on the sidelines since April 2014 dealing with numerous injuries, but remains 6-0 inside of the Octagon, and is coming off of a win over dos Anjos.

Aiming to return to action in the coming months, Nurmagomedov recently texted UFC president Dana White, asking for a bout with Alvarez, who edged out a split-decision victory over Pettis last weekend.

Aside from a bout with “The Silent Assassin”, “The Eagle” would also be open to fighting surging No. 5-ranked Tony Ferguson (Via MMAMania):

“Yes, this is true. I watch the fight, Eddie Alvarez vs. Pettis, and I sent a message to (Dana White) that I want to fight this guy because this guy fought two big names, Gilbert Melendez and Pettis. He’s No. 1 contender, very close to me and a contender in lightweight division. I want Alvarez or Tony Ferguson. No problem if UFC gives me Tony or Alvarez because this is two contenders. I am a contender and I want to take one of these guys and after this fight, fight for the belt.”

Arguably already deserving of a title shot, who would you like to see Nurmagomedov square off with upon his hopeful return to the lightweight division?

You know, for a guy who transitioned into MMA from the much heralded bear wrestling circuit, Khabib Nurmagomedov doesn’t seem to hold up so well against members of his own species.

He may be undefeated in the octagon, but Nurmagomedov has spent the better part of the past year and a half injuring, then nursing, then re-injuring, then re-re-injuring himself and subsequently pulling out of every damn fight he’s been offered as a result. He’s the Russian, lightweight Dominick Cruz, if you will.

In fact, the closest thing Khabib’s even had to a legitimate fight since April of 2014 was that bench-clearing brawl he had with the Diaz brothers at WSOF 22. So it might not shock you to learn that, some six weeks out from his hotly-anticipated return bout against fellow top contender Tony Ferguson scheduled for the TUF 22 Finale, Nurmagomedov has gone down with a rib injury suffered in training. (via MMAFighting):

An injured rib has forced Nurmagomedov out of his highly-anticipated Dec. 11 fight against Tony Ferguson, sources confirmed with MMAFighting.com Thursday night.

This latest injury is particularly disheartening for the undefeated Russian because two serious knee injuries have sidelined him since his win over Rafael dos Anjos in April 2014. Despite his long layoff, the 22-0 lightweight, who by all accounts tried his best to fight through the injury but could not get cleared, is still considered one of the very best 155-pound fighters in the world.

With Nurmy now out, rumor has it the UFC is quickly rescheduling Ferguson against Edson Barboza, who has won three out of his past four fights. My guess is that Joe Silva had him on standby.

And now, there’s only one thing left for us to do: Wait and see what Showtime Pettis will have to say about this on Twitter. (#MMAJournalism)

Fight Night 71 Highlights/Results: Mir Sleeps Duffee, El Cucuy Carves Up Thomson, Holm Underwhelms Again + More

(“BY GAWD, HE KILLED HIM!”)

While Fight Night 71 may have been a bit of a comedown from the high that last weekend’s cards provided, with 9 of the 12 scheduled fights going the distance, it managed to deliver yet another “Knockout of the Year”-worthy finish in it’s main event, which was probably the craziest sub-one and a half minute fight since Cerrone vs. Guillard.

Both Frank Mir and Todd Duffee came out throwin’ them bungalows early, but it was evident from the start that Mir was enjoying a significant speed advantage over his much younger opponent. Duffee was quite literally lunging into his punches, leaving himself exposed for big counters, and found one just over a minute into the fight in the form of a VICIOUS left hand. Though Mir would declare that “his emotions got the best of him” in his post-fight interview, there’s no arguing with the results.

Mir is now 2-0 since dropping 4 straight between 2012 and 2014. Andrei Arlovski has won three straight in the UFC. Cro Cop just beat the sh*t out of Gabe Gonzaga. Fedor is returning, and oh yeah, Fabricio Werdum is the champ. I think it’s safe to declare 2015 as the year of, as one redditor put it, “The Old School Heavyweight.”

In the co-main event of the evening, Tony “El Cucuy” Ferguson did work on Josh Thom-son, son. The TUF 13 winner, who has now won six straight fights with 4 finishes, sliced and diced Thomson with elbows throughout the three round affair and nearly finished the former Strikeforce champ with a couple different submissions to boot. It’s a testament to Thomson’s grittiness that he was able to make it the distance, but this might have been the fight that signals his descent from the top of the pack.

Tough luck, Josh. At least there’s always that pizza place in Indiana to fall back on.

Holly Holm is not ready for Ronda Rousey, Nation, and I say that with all due respect. Matched up against Marion Reneau in her sophomore outing, Holm turned in yet another underwhelming performance, chock full of funky kicks that found mostly air and a lot of yelling. Holm is truly the Maria Sharapova of kicking and punching, but against an opponent who offered literally no offense outside of a couple guard pulls, she still couldn’t pull the trigger. I know the UFC wants to push this Holm vs. Rousey narrative like it’s the next big thing in WMMA, but the winner of Jessica Eye vs. Miesha Tate is a much more interesting matchup, which is saying something, because one of those people has already been beaten by Rousey twice.
