Monday’s live edition of The MMA Hour will be broadcast from San Diego, site of UFC on Versus 2.

We will first be joined by rising star light heavyweight Phil Davis, who is stepping in on short notice to face Rodney Wallace at UFC 117 this weekend.

We will also be joined by Strikeforce commentator Mauro Ranallo and MMA Fighting’s Ben Fowlkes to look back on Sunday’s card and other news and notes making headlines in the MMA world.

And finally, MC Hammer, yes, I said MC Hammer, will stop by to talk about getting involved in the MMA management world with Alchemist MMA.

Check out the show below live beginning at 1 PM ET.

Tim Boetsch Still the ‘Barbarian’

Often times, fighters talk up of a new version of themselves after time away. Here, light heavyweight Tim Boetsch says fans can still expect at UFC 117 the same fighter they’ve seen in the past.

“I made some changes, but I’m still the ‘Barbarian,'” Boetsch recently told MMAFighting.com. “I’m still looking to finish everyone in my fights. I’m still going to slam people every chance I can. The biggest change for me has been my mental focus and my determination. I’m much stronger in what I need to do.”

After a return to the UFC octagon officiating three bouts during the UFC on Versus 2 event this past weekend, popular veteran referee “Big” John McCarthy will not be a presence at the upcoming UFC 117.

A California state athletic commission representative confirmed to MMA Fighting that McCarthy has not been assigned to referee any fights for the upcoming pay-per-view, which takes place on Aug. 7 from Oracle Arena in Oakland.

The same commission assigned McCarthy to work on UFC on Versus 2, which emanated from San Diego.

Coming back from his upset decision loss against Chael Sonnen at UFC 109, Nate Marquardt will look to regain his fire at UFC 118 (August 28th, Boston) against Rousimar Palhares, the longtime asshole who most recently caught a 90-day suspension for not letting go of Tomasz Drwal’s ankle at UFC 111. Our buddy Sal Mora caught up to Nate this weekend to get his thoughts on the matchup, UFC 117‘s Sonnen vs. Silva headliner, and more. Some highlights:

On his loss to Sonnen: "I didn’t follow my gameplan, and I paid for it. I put on a good show, but mentally I wasn’t there…I fought a wrestler exactly how you’re not supposed to fight a wrestler — just stepping straight forward, trying to knock him out with every punch. So, I learned my lesson. I put on a good fight so I think that’s important as well, but I definitely plan on being a lot stronger mentally this next fight."

If you’ve been following the verbal warfare Chael Sonnen’s launched at Anderson Silva as they head into their tilt next weekend, then you know he’s got a teee-onne of sh-t ready to be dumped on his bed, if he gets bombed out on the 7th. We jumped all over Chael’s ‘what did he say now?’ trash talk when the bout was first made official, but over the last couple of weeks, the tough as nails wrestler has really been pouring it on huh? Sure its damn entertaining, but even some of Sonnen’s biggest supporters must be thinking about the massive humble pie their boys going to have to eat, if he in fact loses.

It seemed like for a few days there (at least from our always clouded perspective) Sonnen’s trash talk had simmered down just a tad, but more recently, things have apparently ‘perked up.’ For example, in the recent UFC teleconference, Sonnen was quoted saying (thanks to ESPN UK for the quotes):

“I’m the toughest guy in the company period, whether it’s Anderson or any other opponent,” stated Sonnen. “There’s never been a guy with earrings that could out-tough me and he’s not going to be the first.”….”You’ve got to understand; I could drag Anderson Silva outside the hotel and beat him up any time I want. I’ve made a commitment to wait until August 7th and I’m going to do everything I can to make sure millions of people watch me do it.”

Wow. A little enraging here, a few laughs there; now that’s how you hype a fight no? To bet on the bout head here.
