Jon Jones has routinely teased a move up to heavyweight, but now he’s upped the ante by aiming for one of the biggest fights possible.

Four days before his long overdue rematch with Daniel Cormier in the main event of this weekend’s (Sat., July 29, 2017) UFC 214, Jones admitted during a Facebook Live chat today that he would love to face former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar in the octagon:

“I would love to fight Brock Lesnar. He’s a massive dude, it would be a massive draw, really big for the sport. It would be a great challenge. That’s a big old boy. I doubt Brock Lesnar would take that fight, though. I definitely wouldn’t try to wrestle with him the whole time. I can’t tell you what I would do.”

The words come at a peculiar time for Jones, as Lesnar has been linked to a UFC comeback after rumor recently arose he had re-entered the USADA drug testing pool in anticipation of a possible octagon return. However, UFC officials soon confirmed that was not true, and Lesnar still remained under a frozen suspension with more than six months left on it after he failed, ironically enough, for the same banned substance that Jones did, and both in conjunction with their respective fights at last July’s UFC 200.

Most are picking Jones to get past his longtime rival Cormier this weekend, and if he does, it’s easy to see that not too many new or particularly difficult challenges would await “Bones” in the shallow UFC 205-pound talent pool outside of a rematch with Alexander Gustafsson, especially now that Anthony “Rumble” Johnson is retired.

Moving up to heavyweight would be a literally huge move for Jones and would provide him with a whole list of new and exciting bouts where he would be far from guaranteed to win considering the size and power edge he would be giving up. But he has to stay sober and out of trouble for long enough to make it to and win one fight, let alone move up a division to face one of the biggest draws MMA has ever seen.

Regardless, a Jones vs. Lesnar match-up would push the boundaries of pay-per-view (PPV) success in a time where UFC brass needs them most, so don’t be surprised to see it come up quite a bit more in the coming months.

It seemed the rematch was all but inevitable after Jones won their first match-up at UFC 182 in 2015, but there have perhaps never been more roadblocks to a bout happening, with a true cascade of strange and troubling circumstances leading to the fight just now happening in the second half of 2017 (and we still have all week to go).

Cormier was forced out of the first date for a second fight at April 2016’s UFC 197 with a leg injury, and the fight was re-booked for the main event of last July’s massive UFC 200, only to see Jones forced out three days prior with a failed USADA drug test. Add that to the litany of legal trouble “Bones” has been in over the past three years, and we’re just not sure to expect from the onetime dominant pound-for-pound king.

Yes, Jones deserves to be around the -250 favorite oddsmakers currently have him at. No, it would not be a surprise to see him come back and outlast Cormier once again to regain the belt he never lost in the cage, but rather had stripped from him due to terrible behavior.

However, there are also a few major signs Jones could be in for a fall, and those signs have been building up for years. Check out our five biggest reasons “DC” could destroy Jones at UFC 214.

5.) Drugs:

Let’s be honest here – if Jon Jones never got into drugs, we wouldn’t be talking about any of this. He’d most likely be well on his way to being the best mixed martial artist of all-time, something he arguably still is. He would have probably left no doubt by now if he didn’t do things like fail a drug test for cocaine prior to his first fight with Cormier or ruin a huge bout with Anthony Johnson by breaking a 25-year-old pregnant woman’s arm in a hit-and-run accident before returning to the rental vehicle to remove a fat stack of cash while leaving identifying paperwork, drug paraphernalia, and condoms in plain sight to police.

Yes, all of that happened, and you can stick up for him all you like, but Jones made his own bed here. He missed out on an absolutely massive payday at UFC 200 last summer, and all to supposedly use a sexual performance enhancement pill that got him another year on the sidelines.

Jones may be the best fighter in the history of MMA. The main thing that has even made that a discussion is his troubled history with drugs, and the undoubtedly huge bouts those associated troubles have ripped from him.

It’s difficult to predict just how much of a toll drugs have taken on Jones, and he’s been clean throughout what were surely many out-of-competition tests until now. But if he shows any sign of wear and tear due to any kind of drugs, Cormier could capitalize.

After their UFC 168 rematch six months later where Silva broke his leg, Weidman went on to defend the title twice against two former light heavyweight champs in Lyoto Machida at UFC 175 and Vitor “The Phenom” Belfort at UFC 187. Four straight wins over true UFC legends in tow, it looked as if Weidman was on his way to becoming a legend himself.

Fast-forward two years, though, and after a brutal beating from Luke Rockhold, a devastating flying knee from Yoel Romero, and a controversial TKO loss to Gegard Mousasi, and Weidman is suddenly fighting to merely be a top contender in the deeply talented 185-pound fray heading into his headlining bout against rising star Kelvin Gastelum in the main event of July 22’s UFC on FOX 25 from the Nassau Coliseum.

During an appearance on today’s episode of The MMA Hour, however, Weidman revealed he almost had another big fight lined up this year after the UFC offered him a trilogy match at June 3’s UFC 212 from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, after Gastelum of all foes was forced out for failing a drug test for marijuana. Weidman was still getting the injuries from his fight versus Mousasi checked out, and had to decline:

“The UFC was asking me if I would fight Anderson Silva. This was, I think three and a half weeks before that fight was going on. In Rio, and I’m just like ‘no’. I was still getting things checked out on my body, and going to different doctors.”

And even though he’s on by far the worst run of his career, Weidman still wasn’t desperate enough to fight a man he’s already beaten twice before in his volatile hometown on super-short notice:

“I had just gone to Vegas, got it all checked out. I already beat the guy twice, I’m going to take a fight on short notice and head to his hometown to fight him? I’m like ‘yeah, that’s not happening. If you want me to fight Anderson again, bump it up a couple of weeks, if you want to do it in Nassau Colosseum or some other time, but I’m not going to do it on short notice.”

Weidman was ultimately booked versus Gastelum in his present must-win fight, yet it’s at least somewhat legitimate to wonder if Weidman would be better off fighting an aging 41-year-old superstar with huge name value rather than a surging 25-year-old knockout striker who’s looked nothing less than lethal in recent outings.

If he does somehow get past Gastelum, perhaps a trilogy match with “The Spider” could be a possibility while the all-out mess of the middleweight division is sorted out when Yoel Romero meets Robert Whittaker for the interim belt at this weekend’s UFC 213 and then waits for injured champion Michael Bisping to finally return and defend the title against a real contender.

Having already faced off once at January 2015’s UFC 182 where Jones successfully defended his then held title, the two were scheduled to rematch at the upcoming UFC 197 on April 23, 2016.

Cormier, however, unfortunately suffered an injury and was forced off of the card, leading the UFC to call on No. 6-ranked Ovince St. Preux to face Jones on short notice for the interim 205 pound strap.

Speaking on the replacement bout, “DC” feels as if St. Preux could be in for a tough test.

Despite their obvious bad blood, Cormier did admit that, in his opinion, Jones is the greatest fighter of all-time:

“I never downplay what Jones is to this sport and what he’s been to this sport,” Cormier told Damon Martin of FOX Sports. “As a competitor I have to be honest with myself, this is a tough one for Ovince. He’s obviously a big, long guy that could cause some issues for most people, but Jon is who he is for a reason.

“He’s the greatest fighter to ever put on a pair of gloves.”

In the wake of his withdrawal from UFC 197, Cormier even was far as to offer his training camp to OSP, or in other words, he offered St. Preux a free trip to San Jose to train at the American Kickboxing Academy.

St. Preux would ultimately decline, but “DC” also admitted that he ‘doesn’t know how’ to beat Jones, given the fact that he lost the first bout, although he obviously would’ve helped OSP in any way he could’ve:

“Even if I don’t help Ovince Saint Preux and I can’t help him beat Jon because I don’t know how to beat Jon Jones, I didn’t do it,” Cormier said. “I don’t have some secret serum to give Ovince, but I would try to help him because even by me being there, it bugs him.”

Will “DC” find a way to beat Jones, or will the outcome of the inevitable rematch not differ from the first showdown?

Cormier recently expressed frustration at the booking because he felt that Dean allowed Jones to stall up against the cage in the later rounds of their first match-up at last year’s UFC 182, but Jones has a different take on the subject.

“Bones” took to Twitter to express a wholly different point of view, noting that it was Cormier’s inability to get himself off of the cage rather than anything Dean did. Check it out:

Dean did receive a decent amount of criticism from fans and UFC President Dana White for not restarting the title fight when a clinch forced the action to screech to a halt in the fifth round, but he has long been one of the most respected and utilized officials in terms of UFC bouts, refereeing many high-profile title fights over the years.

Cormier doesn’t agree with him once again reffing his fight, however, and Jones obviously thinks that it was on ‘DC’ to get himself out the predicament rather than the referee.
