Former UFC featherweight kingpin Jose Aldo is feeling disrespected after being side-stepped for a shot at ‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor to unify the featherweight titles, as McGregor instead will chase the 155-pound title at UFC 205 in hopes of becoming the first dual-weight champion in UFC history.

Shortly after the UFC 205 press conference to present the massive card to mixed martial arts (MMA) fans, Aldo would then request his release from his UFC contract as he claimed he no longer trusted UFC President Dana White and wished to pursue another sport.

Aldo recently spoke to Brazil’s SporTV earlier today (courtesy of MMA Fightingand was asked if a match-up with the Irishman would be enough to get him back inside the Octagon:

“No. Not even that because that would be the right thing to happen,” Aldo said. “This fight is the fight that should happen next in the featherweight division. I conquered that [right] ever since I entered the UFC. I saw other champions losing and fighting right away for the belt. That was the right thing.

“I didn’t fight for the belt. They made me fight for the interim title, I went there and won, and still have no definition whatsoever. To me, not even a fight with McGregor… It’s not about him being fighting now or not. I don’t care where he’s going. I want to follow my path. Today, the right is me getting released from the contract.”

Aldo claims that he not only wants to be done with the UFC but the sport of MMA altogether, and would not be signing with any other promotion if he is released:

“It’s hard for me. If there’s something good [the UFC can do] is release me,” he said. “I don’t want to fight for other promotion. I’m at the level above. There’s no reason why leave the first division to fight at the second division when I’m well appreciated in the first division, it would mean taking a step back.

“I don’t want to fight for other promotion. I want to follow my way in a different sport, do new things. I’m a young guy, and I want to enjoy that side, too.

“A good thing would be if they release me without a fight. I’m not mad at the UFC or no one else. I like Dana, I have a special love for Lorenzo [Fertitta], a guy that always treated me well since I got to the UFC. If there’s something good from this, I hope they release me so I can follow my way and the UFC follows its way.”

With McGregor’s choice to jump to 155-pounds and pursue that title rather than defend the featherweight strap that the Irishman carries so proudly around his shoulder, ‘Scarface’ believes McGregor is scared to face him after seeing his performance against Frankie Edgar at UFC 200 for the interim title:

“Everybody knows he’s scared to fight [me],” Aldo said. “He knows how dangerous I am for him for the fact that my last fight, everybody said that I had a safe performance and if I fight this way I don’t lose to anyone. I’ve seen him in press conferences saying that he would fight with Frankie Edgar but not against me. I think he’s scared.”

While Aldo is looking to make his way out of the UFC, McGregor has a date in the main event of UFC 205 against Eddie Alvarez for the UFC lightweight title live on pay-per-view (PPV), from the Madison Square Garden arena in New York City on November 12, 2016.

As the biggest mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion of all time, the UFC has whipped up some huge fights in its history with some of the baddest men on the planet going head-to-head against one another.

Some fights between two top competitors don’t quite live up to the hype, however, as the bout ends up putting fight fans to sleep rather than keeping them on the edge of their seat for 25 minutes or less.

Then, once in a blue moon, we get a fight that not only lives up to the hype, but exceeds it tremendously. That, my friends, is what we have compiled for you today, the top 10 biggest fights in UFC history that have ended with historic finishes. Let’s begin……

fabricio-werdum-submission10. Cain Velasquez vs. Fabricio Werdum UFC – 188

We kick off our list in the big boys’ division, where two of the most dangerous heavyweights of all time clashed for the biggest prize in MMA.

Coming off of nearly a two-year layoff from the sport, Cain Velasquez would attempt to unify his title with the then-interim heavyweight champ Fabricio Werdum who was on a five-fight win streak.

The opening rounds were a bit back-and-forth and the arena in Mexico City was hot for their native Velasquez, however, the altitude proved to be too much for ‘Cardio Cain’ to handle as he gassed out in the third round.

Velasquez then shot in for a takedown on the Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist and was immediately wrapped up in a nasty guillotine choke. Velasquez had no other choice but to tap out and make Werdum the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world.

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor and his interim counterpart Joe Aldo have a very colorful history. ‘The Notorious’ first mentioned Aldo’s name back in 2013 after destroying Marcus Brimage in his UFC debut. Th duo were eventually paired in a pivotal title bout at UFC 189 that would never transpire. Eventually McGregor fought Chad Mendes for the junior strap in the main event on July 11, 2015. The resulting second round TKO win for the Irishman set up a unification bout for the recovering Brazilian’s belt.

When McGregor and Aldo finally met i the octagon at UFC 194, they’d been embroiled in a year-long rivalry. The world tour for UFC 189 had seen countless confrontations and trash talking wars, and it all came to a head in 13 seconds. ‘Mystic Mac’ fulfilled his prophecy, laying Aldo down with a single well-timed left hand to the chin. As ‘Scarface’ came around from his flash slumber on the canvas, he awoke to a completely different world.

Rise and Fall

The fall of arguably the greatest 145-pound fighter of all-time was truly a historic moment. The time since has proved to be a wild ride, and has signalled the potential end of the rankings. ‘Money fights’ are he future, ushered in by that one-punch knockout that changed the way the cogs turned. While ‘The Notorious’ wondered up in weight to fight Nate Diaz twice, Aldo defeated Frankie Edgar at UFC 200 for the interim belt.

Continuing the trend of cash over rankings, the Irish superstar now has sights on the lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez. The fierce rivalry with ‘Scarface’ must go on if Mcgregor plans to fight at featherweight again, but that’s yet to be revealed. According to a report on Bloody Elbow, the beef is not as serious as you’d think.

Jose Aldo Conor McGregor

Friends?

“It’s a friendly relationship. I don’t have a problem with him trying to promote himself. If we take a look at it money-wise, it was pretty good. I think there should be more fighters like him at featherweight. I’m not his friend, though. He can go his way and I can go mine.”

“I’ve seen him staring at a wall, looking at nothing with everyone around him trying to taunt him and he would just stand there, gazing. He’s a regular, mellow guy, but if he sees a camera or some Irish people, he transforms in a such way that makes you say to yourself ‘son of a bitch’”.

Drinking with the enemy

“One day we were hanging out and he said he was going to get the coffee and I said I wanted mine with sugar and he said something like ‘nice’. Most of the times we met, there was always someone recording us, though, so he had to keep his persona up. With no cameras, he changes completely.”

Jose Aldo vs. Conor McGregor 2 is by no means a certainty, but one thing is–there’ll be no talk of friendship if/when they are booked to rematch.

Despite being shockingly knocked out by Conor McGregor at last December’s UFC 194, former champion Jose Aldo will be always be remembered for putting together one of the very best title runs in not only promotional history, but sport history as well.

Despite his illustrious reign, however, Aldo has been criticized for his performances inside of the Octagon, as some feel as if he had repeatedly coasted to decision victories rather than shooting for the finish like he had done so many times prior to joining the UFC.

Back in his WEC days, for example, “Scarface” was a killer inside of the cage. Now looking to bounce back after a disappointing loss, Aldo claims that he has once again found that fire:

“That hunger, everything I felt in the WEC days, is all back, and I want to do it again,” Aldo told MMAjunkie.

Aldo will get his chance to rebound in the co-main event of July 9’s blockbuster UFC 200 card from Las Vegas, Nevada. The former champion will rematch ex-lightweight boss Frankie “The Answer” Edgar with the interim 145-pound strap hanging in the balance.

When the two previously met at UFC 156, Aldo walked away with a decision victory, although Edgar did have some success. Since then, “The Answer” has gone on a tear, winning five-straight bouts with three of those victories coming by way of finish.

Aldo then gave his assessment on the upcoming bout, praising Edgar’s wrestling skills, but warning the New Jersey native not to stand with him:

“(Wrestling is) his strongpoint,” Aldo said. “That’s his strength, and it’s what he’s going to try to do. There’s no way. If he stands with me, he’s going to go down.

“In my mind, I still haven’t lost the belt. Obviously, this is another step, and by beating Frankie Edgar I’ll get the belt back.”

Will the Brazilian be able to get back to his winning ways this summer, or have we seen the last of Aldo’s dominance?

Jose Aldo Would Take Street Fight Against Conor McGregor

Former UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo will get another shot at gold when UFC 200 comes around, but it’s not what he’d hoped for. Former UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo will get another shot at gold when UFC 200 comes around, but it’s not what he’d hoped for. The junior belt will be on the line as the head of the division remains shrouded in a controversial stand off between Conor McGregor and the promotion. Many have argued that McGregor’s protest against his contractual obligations could go on to serve fighters of the next generation, but that probably doesn’t make the pill of an interim title any sweeter for Aldo or his July 9 opponent Frankie Edgar.

As ‘The Notorious’ continues to be heavily linked to a welterweight rematch with Nate Diaz, who had stopped Conor McGregor inside two rounds at UFC 196, the truth is that nobody knows when the 145-pound strap will be defended next. There’s even the chance that the undisputed title could in fact be on the line at UFC 200, if the rumours of McGregor not wanting to fight at featherweight again are true. With all these variables in play, a bet on either scenario would be a punt at best.

Aldo vs Edgar

‘Scarface’ was the original UFC featherweight champion, and before colliding with Conor McGregor at UFC 194 last year, was widely considered a top three pound-for-pound staple. Once the octagon door shut on Aldo and the interim champ of the time McGregor, it would only be 13 seconds and one well timed punch before all those accolades became a thing of the past. As much as you’d imagine Aldo to be humble in defeat, truth be told he really hasn’t been, but can you blame him?

At the time of the fight last December, the promotion appeared to be carving the path for McGregor’s title shot with opponent’s like Dennis Siver who, let’s be frank, had no place in the octagon with ‘The Notorious,’ let alone in a title contender fight. Perhaps that statement is slightly opinion driven, and the Irish star would later go on to defeat the wrestler Chad Mendes when Aldo was injured and pulled out of UFC 189.

McGregorWillDefendFeatherweightBelt

Then there was the issues of Reebok, poor fighter pay and mistreatment by the UFC, problems that Jose Aldo faced head on, publicly making his stance against the promotion’s practices. Unfortunately for the Brazilian MMA legend, these opinions came back to haunt him when the UFC released harrowing scenes of his post KO loss to McGregor.

So now booked in against Frankie Edgar for the second fight in their illustrious careers, what’s driving the former champion? Yep, you guessed it, it’s a little Irish guy…
