UFC bantamweight Francisco Rivera has been dealt an almost-damning blow to his mixed martial arts career.

‘Cisco’ was given a four-year suspension by USADA following a failed drug test leading into 2016’s UFC 201.

Rivera tested positive for clenbuterol, and initially blamed its detection on tainted meat eaten while vacationing in Mexico. However, Rivera could not prove he was there prior to the failed test, and USADA ultimately decided upon a four-year suspension.

The decision was made official this week following an evidentiary hearing last month.

USASA released a statement on Rivera’s suspension and failed test;

“(USADA) concluded that the clenbuterol levels detected in [Rivera’s] sample were inconsistent with what could be expected from meat contamination,” and that Rivera was “unable to provide independently verifiable evidence to support his claim that he had traveled to Northern Mexico and ingested meat in the days leading up to the relevant sample collection.”

To make matters worse for Rivera, USADA claims that the UFC bantamweight falsified evidence in an attempt to prove his innocence:

“(USADA’s investigation) revealed that several pieces of evidence presented by Rivera to USADA and the arbitrator had been falsified to support the athlete’s claims that the substance had originated from contaminated meat in Mexico.”

Rivera’s failed test combined with his attempts to deceive USADA led to his harsh four-year suspension. He won’t be eligible to fight again until August 2020, when Rivera will be nearly 40 years old.

Do you agree with USADA’s ruling on Rivera’s suspension?

Pat Barry Blames His Drug Addiction For Rose Namajunas’ Failures

Following a highlight reel finish of Michelle Waterson in her last fight this past April, top-ranked UFC women’s strawweight contender Rose Namajunas is reportedly heading for a rumored title shot against dominant champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk at November’s UFC 217 from Madison Square Garden.

But that victory showed just how fickle the fight game can be, as Namajunas returned from nine months out of fighting to defeat “The Karate Hottie” after dropping a disappointing hard-fought decision to No. 2 strawweight Karolina Kowalkiewicz at UFC 201.

Namajunas didn’t get stopped or even demolished in that fight, so to say, but one of the things – probably the most major thing – missing from her camp was her longtime boyfriend and cornerman Pat Barry, the UFC and kickboxing veteran who had quietly been out of combat sports since early 2015. While “HD’s” absence from “Thug” Rose’s corner elicited a significant amount of speculation as drama like that tends to do on social media, Barry appeared on this week’s edition of The MMA Hour to detail the reasons why he was gone in an emotional interview.

The touted knockout artist detailed a scene where he had been jailed for driving under the influence following a scene where he had nearly become involved in a fistfight with a patron at a local pizza joint while in Alexandria, Minn., helping Brock Lesnar prepare for his then-upcoming UFC return against Mark Hunt. Barry described that he had called Namajunas to say good night, but then never answered her texts or calls because he was incarcerated. That was when he knew he couldn’t get out, and now the woman who had supported him for so long had begun to give up on him, too:

“That was the moment, I realized, I can’t get out of this cell if they don’t let me out, I can’t get out. Me, ‘Gorilla Pat,’ I can’t physically break out. I can’t talk my way out. The one person I called hung the phone up, and didn’t answer, Rose. [She was] disappointed. I figured out this doesn’t need to go any further. I realized, s–t needs to change and s–t needs to change now.”

Barry then detailed his addictive tendencies to Ariel Helwani, noting that he became hooked on prescription pain meds, an epidemic all too common today:

“Pills and stuff, it’s not for me because I want all of them,” he said. “They don’t have enough for me. It’s like, ‘If one makes you feel like this, what does 17 make you feel like?’”

Namajunas believed it was time for her to move on from Barry, at least how he was in his current state, so she left him, and that was when he said he realized things had to change. He blamed himself, putting any of Namajunas’ failures as a fighter on his poor decision making:

“Go back to any of Rose’s performances that didn’t seem quite right. It was me,” he said. “I was the outside distraction. This guy. Any performance. I’m not talking about just fighting. Any interview that seemed off and weird, any post on social media, it was my f—king fault. So I said, I’m not doing that no more. She should’ve been world champ two years ago. It was me. I didn’t know it was me, but it was me.”

The failures of a top-ranked UFC competitor headed for a title shot are certainly a huge – and most likely, unnecessary burden -for one man to shoulder, and it could also be said that the 25-year-old Namajunas just isn’t as good as Jedrzejczyk is right now, and may not ever be.

But for their relationship, which Barry and Namajunas showed incredible courage in revealing the intimate details of to an audience of MMA faithful that can be notoriously harsh, he quit using prescription pills and alcohol ‘cold turkey’ to mend their bond. Barry is now headed for his first fight in almost three years when he meets former Bellator title contender Eric Pringle in a kickboxing match using MMA gloves on November 18. He’s got Namajunas and his drive to compete back, and in doing so, his life.

After proving he could stay sober for a year now, Namajunas voiced her own love and support for her longtime partner during the interview:

“I just love this guy. We’ve been bouncing around a lot, I never had a place to call home. I have a home now, not just an actual house, but my coaches and this guy. If I can’t do it with them, I don’t want to do it. It’s more about the journey and the experiences with each other, and that makes it the best rollercoaster ever.”

Finally, Barry offered a positive path moving forward due to his diligent commitment to rising above addiction:

“We found a different lifestyle, a path we like a lot better,” he said. “Not only do we like it a lot better, I think everybody likes it a lot better. It’s more fun. It’s more healthy for everyone. It’s not dark anymore. It’s light now.”

UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley really rocked the boat on July 30. Taking less than three minutes to finish Robbie Lawler in the UFC 201 main event, ‘The Chosen One’ literally punched his ticket to the top spot. Just moments after knocking out Lawler, Stephen Thompson challenged Woodley on live TV. ‘Wonderboy’ was shot down though. The newly minted 170-pound boss claimed he had other plans, joining the current trend of money fights at championship level.

Following his devastation of ‘Ruthless,’ Woodley mentioned two huge but unranked names. Former welterweight king and MMA legend Georges St-Pierre was on the list, as was fan favorite Nick Diaz. The decision to seek out two of the biggest names in the divisions history was bold, but also met with criticism. Angry fans took to social media to voice their outrage. Thompson seemed upset, but remained professional. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for some of Woodley’s critics on social media.

Woodley Reveals Racist Comments Online

Tyron Woodley spoke about the backlash he’s faced since deciding to call out ‘GSP’ and Diaz on his podcast ‘Morning Wood.’ He says far from simply disagreeing with his choice of next opponent, certain social media users have been racially abusing him. The disturbing statement comes via BJ Penn:

“I can tell you from experience, as a champion, the last three weeks of my life have been completely the opposite of what you’d think it’d be,” Woodley said on his show. “I’ve had so many people say, ‘you p*ssy, you’re scared of this person,’ and I’m like, I just fought an hour ago. I just got the belt! I’ve had people say ‘you should be stripped of the belt’ and actually it’s a month today that I won the belt.”

Negativity

“I’ve had people call me n**ger, and monkey, and all this racist stuff, and I delete these people, then they’ll create another page and just go back out. People are willing to take so many hours of their day to be so negative. Some people, I look at their page and all they do all day is go against African-American athletes and try to racially slur them.”

The power that social media gives certain people is somewhat troubling. The ability to sit behind a keyboard and remain anonymous means bullies get to voice their innermost thoughts and ideas without repercussion. This behaviour is as disgusting as it is unacceptable, but sadly is also nothing new. We can rest easy in the fact Woodley will likely disregard these comments clearly made by unintelligent pond life on social media. Al the same, it begs the question as to whether or not the human race is beginning to devolve at a steady rate.

UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley is pumping the breaks on a Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson matchup for his first title defense.

Earlier today UFC President Dana White revealed in an interview with UFC.com that the No. 2-ranked ‘Wonderboy’ will get the first shot at the new 170-pound champ, and Thompson was ecstatic to hear the news.

Thompson took to his official Facebook page to thank White for the opportunity, and promises he will take the welterweight strap home:

“BOOYAH!!!!! Thank you Dana White! Thank you UFC! Extreme Thank you to all the fans that supported me and this title shot! Time to get to work and bring that belt home!!!!!”

This is apparently news to Woodley, who claims he has yet to agree to fight anyone for his first title defense, and has yet to hear from the UFC on a bout with Thompson:

Woodley (16-3) is coming off of a thunderous first round knockout of former champion Robbie Lawler in the main event of UFC 201, in which he secured the first UFC title in his seven-year mixed martial arts (MMA) career.

Following the bout ‘The Chosen One’ began to heavily campaign for ‘super-fights’ against proven commodities such as former 170-pound kingpin Georges St-Pierre and the trash-talking Stockton Native Nick Diaz.

No official confirmation of a contest between Woodley and Thompson has yet been made, but keep in locked with LowKick and we’ll keep you updated as we learn more…

It’s not even been two weeks since Tyron Woodley rose to the top of the crop at 170 pounds, but the new champion has made waves. After knocking out Robbie Lawler in the first round at UFC 201, ‘The Chosen One’ went against the grain in terms of his next potential fight. Overcoming ‘Ruthless’ in such dominant fashion was certainly impressive. Lawler’s recent wars had fans believing he may stay on top for a while, but Woodley’s overhand right had different ideas.

Perhaps more shocking than his monstrous KO over Lawler was Woodley’s post-fight call-outs. Mere moments after receiving the belt ‘The Chosen One’ sent the MMA media in to a frenzy. Challenges to Nick Diaz and Georges St-Pierre dominated headlines after the July 30 main event, leaving one particular welterweight contender in dismay.

Wonderboy, or not

The consensus opinion was that Stephen Thompson would get the next shot at the title after UFC 201. ‘Wonderboy’ recently starched Jake Ellenberger and Johny Hendricks, and als won a dominant decision over Rory MacDonald. Woodley’s search for ‘money fights’ has left the kickboxing ace Thompson in a tough spot.

The ironic similarities to Woodley’s run at the title and Thompson’s are not lost on fans. Tirades from angry followers over social media have led to ‘T-Wood’ putting his foot down a few times now. In a protest on Instagram, none other than ‘Wonderboy’s’ Dad Ray Thompson put the new welterweight champion on blast.

Agree?

The line between entertainment and sport has never been so blurred. Is it up to the UFC or the tile holders in terms of the next fight? If recent history is anything to go by, you’d have to say it’s been the latter. Conor McGregor, Michael Bisping, Dominick Cruz and others have been calling a lot of the shots to an extent.

Should ‘Wonderboy’ get the next shot? You might have to ask the Benjamins about that one.

UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley hasn’t been in the hot seat for long, but already is making some noise about huge fights. Mere minutes after starching Robbie Lawler at UFC 201, ‘The Chosen One’ was interviewed by top contender Stephen Thompson. ‘Wonderboy’ called for his shot at the belt, but was snubbed by Woodley in short order. The newly crowned boss of the division laid two names on the table–Georges St-Pierre and Nick Diaz.

Former 170-pound champion and UFC legend GSP has been inactive since a 2013 split decision over Johny Hendricks. ‘Rush’ took an extended leave of absence, referencing the lack of drug testing and personal issues as his reasons. In time we’d come to learn that St-Pierre still had the urge to fight, and just yesterday he announced he had joined the USADA testing pool. The obvious connotation from that statement is that GSP is coming back.

Money fights are the future

Former Strikeforce welterweight champ and cult UFC icon Nick Diaz had his suspension from the Nevada Commission end earlier this month. Once Woodley spoke his name, the 209 native gave a number of colourful interviews regarding the recently minted champion. In a hilarious moment, Diaz claimed Woodley ‘needed a few more fights’ before he could be considered as a worthy foe.

These comments did not go down well with ‘The Chosen One,’ who later responded by saying Diaz had ‘talked himself out of the money fight.’ The welterweight revival continued though, as St-Pierre doubled up the headlines by calling out Diaz for a rematch. Not one to miss out on all the fun, Woodley sat down with The Buzzer’s Andy Nesbitt to talk about his next fight.

“Georges St-Pierre and Nick Diaz are stepping-stones to me making the UFC hall of fame. I like the St-Pierre fight at UFC 205, he has a big following in New York and I think it would make a great fight. The Diaz call out was because he was one of the guys who fought when there wasn’t a lot of money in fighting. Out of all the guys I thought he really deserved a big money fight.”

“This is the biggest opportunity for the UFC to blow this out of the water. The former champion, a legend, and (me) the future of the sport. I have to go out there and prove to myself I’m the best in the world.”

Respect for CM Punk

“Fighters get enough flack from the fans. Fighters should not be giving someone else who competes that kind of flack.”

There’s a lot of potential for Tyron Woodley’s future as UFC champion. Do you think e can beat Nick Diaz or Georges St-Pierre? If so, there’s no denying he’ll be well up there with the best welterweight champs of all-time.
