Frankie Edgar: ‘You Can’t Write’ Better Story Than Me vs. McGregor At MSG

Surging featherweight contender and former lightweight champion Frankie “The Answer” Edgar will finally get his chance to avenge his loss to Jose Aldo at July 9’s UFC 200 from Las Vegas, Nevada. The two met back in 2013 for Aldo’s then-held 145-pound title in a close fought five round affair that Aldo came out of the victor.

This time, an interim title will be on the line, as Aldo surrendered the strap in brutal fashion to Conor McGregor last December. McGregor then decided to move up in weight and challenge Nate Diaz at UFC 196 in a bout where he was submitted in the second round.

McGregor will now look to avenge that loss at August 20’s UFC 202, putting the featherweight division on hold once again.

Edgar, however, is simply focused on the gold, and he plans to beat Aldo before hopefully facing off with McGregor for the undisputed title at November 12’s UFC 205 in New York:

“You can’t write something better than that,” Edgar said on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour. “Why wouldn’t Conor want to fight at MSG? There’s definitely a big Irish contingency in New York and it could be possibly biggest fight UFC history.”

Of course this potentially massive fight would require McGregor to drop back down to featherweight, something he has yet to do since capturing the title. Edgar for one isn’t sure if the Irishman will ever defend his crown:

“At ’45, he has everything to lose,” Edgar said. “At ’70 he has nothing to lose, even though Nate is a ’55 pounder and they decided not to cut weight, so they can market going up two weight classes which is ridiculous since he’s a 55 pounder … at ’45, if he loses, he has nothing. He has a hard time making the weight. If he goes to 55 he’s not going to be in the title talks for awhile.”

As far as how Aldo will rebound from his devastating loss to the “Notorious” one, Edgar says that we won’t know until “Scarface” shows up to the Octagon:

“To be so dominant for this long, and then to lose like that, Conor is worst guy to lose to in that fashion,” Edgar said. “He already let the world know before and he let the world know after. He digs better than anybody. Some guys get through it and some guys don’t. He may say this or say that in the leadup for the fight, but even he won’t know until he steps into the Octagon.”

Former UFC and WEC lightweight title contender Donald Cerrone made a smooth transition up to welterweight in Fenbruary, defeating fellow ‘Cowboy’ Alex Oliveira with a slick triangle choke. After a failed 155-pound title attempt against Rafael dos Anjos in December of last year, the nine-year UFC/WEC veteran decided he’d try his luck at 170 pounds. Now set to face Patrick Cote at this weekend’s UFC Fight Night 89, Cerrone recently teased a potential move to middleweight in the future.

Cerrone’s willingness to take short notice fights against anyone, anytime saw him compete 12 times in the UFC octagon between January 2013 and December 2015. Wins over Benson Henderson and Eddie Alvarez highlight ‘Cowboy’s’ 16-4 promotional record.

Cowboy Cerrone

Talking during a live Facebook Q&A this week, Donald Cerrone addressed a number of interesting questions from fans, and also some ‘keyboard warriors.’ First up he made a prediction for the welterweight main event in Ottawa between Rory MacDonald and Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson:

“I think Wonderboy is going to win (the main event vs. MacDonald). I think he’s going to take it, I really do, that’s a fight I’d be interested in facing the winner of. I don’t know if I’m going to stay at 170 or go back to 155, but I know I’m going to stay fighting, I love it, it’s what I enjoy doing; kicking ass.”

On Brock Lesnar vs. Mark Hunt at UFC 200 and GSP’s return:

“If Mark (Hunt) gets a hold of him, I think he’s going to put him to sleep. But if Brock (Lesnar) goes out there and wrestles him he’s going to take it to the ground…I also think GSP is going to make a comeback, I hear there’s works for him to come back at 185. Should be fun, I really like him.”

Cerrone also got asked a number of questions about UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor, which you can find on the next page.

It looks like Conor McGregor is starting to bring in some special training partners to prepare him for his upcoming 170-pound rematch with Nate Diaz.

Dillon Danis, a jiu-jitsu black belt under the highly regarded Marcelo Garcia, was apparently brought in by McGregor to help him work on his ground game ahead of his August rematch against Diaz, the first man to ever beat him inside the Octagon.

Danis told FloGrappling.com the following about working with McGregor for his rematch with Diaz:

“We’ve been in contact for a while and the time was just right. He’s one of my idols and you don’t pass up opportunities like this. He has one of the greatest minds and skill sets ever in the sport.”

It looks like the announcement of Conor McGregor vs. Nate Diaz 2 for UFC 202 in August won’t stop the talk of a potential boxing match between “The Notorious” one and Floyd Mayweather.

McGregor’s coach, John Kavanagh, recently spoke with MMA Underground’s Jonathan Shrager to promote his new book, “Win Or Learn,” and during the discussion, he spoke about what the Diaz announcement means for McGregor’s rumored boxing match with Mayweather.

“It puts it on hold. I think that contest will happen eventually but it’s on hold for now. I’d be very surprised if it doesn’t at some stage. I think it’s a bigger fight; I think there’s a lot of intrigue about it. I could be 100% wrong. Right now we’re focusing on August 20th. We have an important rematch – a mixed martial arts fight – but if in time that fight was to be announced it would not surprise me and I think it would be an interesting one.”

As the SBG Ireland head coach continued, he spoke specifically of the style breakdown between McGregor and Mayweather, joking that McGregor might need to utilize some of his MMA skills in such a match.

“It’s hard to beat Floyd with boxing because he seems to be almost perfect in terms of how defensive he is. I think if you’re a classically trained boxer you’re gonna lose to Floyd because he just seems to make everybody look quite ordinary. But maybe somebody who doesn’t strike like a boxer might be a new look for him. Maybe the odd sly knee and leg kick as well. [Laughs.] You get two warnings. [Laughs.]

“But seriously I think Conor’s style is very unusual and Floyd is – I’m personally a fan of his style. I love watching him. I love watching fighters who don’t get hit… I think it’s absolutely beautiful and that’s why I mean I think he is one of the older school trained fighters and the boxing approach most are using against him just won’t work because he’s been doing this for so long. He’s in fantastic shape for his age and he hasn’t taken much head trauma.

“So if you understand anything about skill development you’ll know that he’s got so many hours of that purposeful practice. Not only purposeful practice but actual competitive experience, so I don’t think that same approach will beat him. But I think the way we strike in mixed martial arts and some of the movements we use and some of the approaches we use, he won’t have the software ready ignition system to that way of moving and way of standing. It would be different to him. So that and a couple of sly elbows as well. [Laughs].”

While reigning UFC 145-pound champion “The Notorious” Conor McGregor prepares for his 170-pound rematch against Nate Diaz at UFC 202 in August, the 145-pound division will crown an interim champion, as former champion Jose Aldo takes on Frankie Edgar in a rematch at UFC 200 in July.

Ahead of both pairs of fights, McGregor’s SBG Ireland coach John Kavanagh spoke with Jonathan Shrager of MMA Underground (via Jonathan Bradley of FOX Sports) about whether or not he sees McGregor returning to the UFC’s 145-pound division after his fight with Diaz in August.

“The short answer is I don’t know,” Kavanagh said. “I’m very intrigued to see the Aldo and Edgar fight.”

Kavanagh continued, “I hope Aldo is fully recovered from the bad knockout. I thought (Chad) Mendes went back in there really quick after the knockout against Conor. People don’t realize the damage it does — it takes a long time to recover, and I think Mendes went down quicker in that fight because of that. Maybe if he’d let himself rest a bit more he might have had more fight for Edgar.”

As Kavanagh continued, he explained that he hopes to see the best of both Aldo and Edgar at UFC 200, before acknowledging that rising contender Max Holloway is also in the mix.

“I hope that’s not the case for Aldo, (I hope) we get to see a solid version of Aldo and a new kind of improved Edgar, and see what different from the first fight. So yea, let’s see that, and assess after the rematch. It’s kind of those two names and (Max) Holloway kind of in the mix, so it’s an interesting time.”
