Yan Xiaonan betting favorite to fight Zhang Weili at UFC China card in December

Amid rumors of an expected return to China for the Octagon before the close of the year, the promotion have been backed to bring with it it’s two most standout talents in the form of two-time and current strawweight champion, Zhang Weili, as well as surging contender, Yan Xiaonan for a potential December 9. showcase.

Yet to return to ‘The Land of the Dragon’ since August 2019, on that occasion, then-championship challenger, Zhang Weili managed to turn in a stunning first round win over defending strawweight queen, Jessica Andrade – stopping the Brazilian with a blistering first round TKO, to become the first Chinese-born fighter in Octagon history to strike gold.

And according to reports over the course of the weekend, the Octagon is expected to land in China for the first time since that 2019 event later this year, for a blockbuster event on December 9.

Yan Xiaonan betting favorite to face Zhang Weili on potential December card in China

A host of bookies and markets, including new online betting sites are already offering odds on Weili’s next title challenger, with the likes of the aforenoted, Xiaonan, and surging grappling talent, Tatiana Suarez initially expected to emerge as likely candidates to face the dominant Hebei gold holder.

Naturally, Weili, who is fresh from a unanimous decision win over title challenger, Amanda Lemos earlier this summer, has been pegged to headline the homecoming card.

And given the above-mentioned, Xiaonan’s recent string of victories over both Mackenzie Dern and common-foe, former champion, Andrade, the Liaoning native is currently available as short as even money to stand opposite Weili for the strawweight crown if the Octagon returns to their native China before the close of the year.

And despite losing her first strawweight championship either side of fights with Rose Namajunas, Weili cemented her Octagon legacy with a pair of memorable fights with former champion, Joanna Jedrzejczyk – turning in a first Fight of the Year, before stopping the Pole with a thunderous spinning back-fist KO in a SIngapore rematch last year.

Scaling the throne once more with a stunningly-dominant submission win over inaugural champion, Carla Esparza last November, Weili kicked off her second title reign back in August in the co-main event of UFC 292 in Boston with a decision shutout win over Brazilian phenom, Lemos.

Avoiding a continued losing skid after back-to-back losses against Esparza and Brazilian striker, Marina Rodriguez, Xiaonan, the current number two ranked contender had racked up wins over both Dern, and the above-mentioned Andrade to likely earn her first title siege since beginning her Octagon stint back in November 2017.

With five fights remaining on her newly-inked UFC contract, Xiaonan, as mentioned earlier, is available as short as even money to draw Weili in a title affair in the pair’s native China on December 9. – with the Octagon gearing up for a return to Asia.

17-3 as a professional, technical striker, Xiaonan, who has racked up eight career knockout wins in the process, took home notable victories over the likes of Kailin Curran, Viviane Pereira, Angela Hill, as well as former title challenges, Karolina Kowalkiewicz, and Claudia Gadelha before faltering for the first time in the Octagon.

Who wins: Zhang Weili or Yan Xiaonan?

Jorge Masvidal details crazy bathroom brawl at UFC China: ‘I wasn’t going to take that chance’

Three men learned the hard way that you don’t mess with Jorge Masvidal or his ornamentation.

The recently retired two-time welterweight title challenger revealed that he was involved in a bathroom brawl while in China for a UFC event held inside the Shenzhen Universade Sports Centre Arena in 2019. Speaking with Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour, Masvidal discussed the incident in detail.

“I was actually in China…. three random European guys. I was in the bathroom. I had a nice chain on at the time and I was waiting in line to wash my hands,” Masvidal said. “These guys are behind me and somebody picks up my chain with their fingers and turns to his friend and starts saying something in a language that I’m not understanding, and I turn around very politely and I go, ‘Hey, relax, bro. It’s all good’. And I go forward to get away because he’s literally grabbing my chain. Like, I’ve never seen you in my life, you can’t do that.”

“Then I’m here, I’m looking in the reflection in the mirror, and the guy goes like this (jerks hand in the air) and lifts up my chain like an a**hole, and he says something to me in whatever language he was speaking. So I was like, I know what’s going to happen next. If these guys keep doing this, they’re going to take everything I’ve got, so when I turned around, the guy got in my face and then yeah, it was like a sleeping bomb went off in there” (h/t BJPenn.com).

It was at that point the three unidentified European men knew they’d f*cked up.

“Knocked the f*ck out – him and his two buddies,” he continued. “They rushed me. The one dude got in my face, I told him to get back, he didn’t understand me, he got closer, boom. Down. His friends come rushing at me, what am I going to do? All in a bathroom.”

Jorge Masvidal Bailed Before Police Arrived at the Scene

By the time it was all said and done, Jorge Masvidal had three bodies stacked up and still remembered to wash his hands before returning to his seat.

“I wash my hands still after I’m done with them. I go to the section where we’re hanging out, and the dude that was in charge of the group, he comes to me and he says, ‘Hey, check this out. Cops are on their way because they said somebody got beat up in the bathroom. In China, if you go to jail, you don’t see the judge, you don’t get bail for 10 days. So right or wrong, you’re going to be in there for 10 days if you do get arrested. I wasn’t going to take that chance, so I just took off.”

Afraid of being arrested in a foreign country, Masvidal immediately left the arena and returned to his hotel.

“I was about to have the time of my life, and then this happened. So after that, I just got into a cab and went back to my hotel and hung out in the lobby.”

It looks as if Anderson Silva and Kelvin Gastelum will end up fighting after all.

According to FloCombat’s Damon Martin, the UFC is targeting a middleweight bout between Silva and Gastelum to headline UFC Fight Night: Shanghai on Nov. 25, 2017 in Shanghai, China.

The duo was originally scheduled to square off last June at UFC 212 in Brazil, but Gastelum was forced to withdraw from the bout after testing positive for Marijuana metabolites.

Silva has been out of action since scoring a closely fought decision victory over Derek Brunson last February at UFC 208 in Brooklyn, New York. Prior to that, he had lost four of his previous five bouts, including losses to Chris Weidman, Michael Bisping and Daniel Cormier. The fifth fight in that stretch came against Nick Diaz, and while Silva technically won the bout, it was changed to a no-contest after both men failed drug tests.

Gastelum, on the other hand, is coming off of a submission loss to Weidman last month on Long Island. Prior to that, he had scored back-to-back stoppage victories over Tim Kennedy and Vitor Belfort, although the win over Belfort was changed to a no-contest due to Gastelum’s failed drug test.

UFC Booking Alert: Michael Bisping to Face Cung Le in August, Hector Lombard vs. Dong Hyun Kim Booked as Well

Michael Bisping has been booked to fight Cung Le on August 23rd, in the main event of a Fight Night card that takes place at the Cotai Arena in Macau. This booking was announced at the UFC 173 post-fight presser.

Le won his last match with a sudden, dramatic KO victory over Rich Franklin. Despite such a win, the 42-year-old isn’t exactly a threat to Bisping, who’s coming off a disappointing decision loss to Tim Kennedy. Looks like the UFC wants its British meal ticket back in the win column as soon as possible.

Get the details on the co-main event, and where the fight card will air after the jump.

The co-main event of this Fight Night card will feature a bout between Dong Hyun Kim and Hector Lombard. Kim is on  a four-fight winning streak. Most recently, he knocked out John Hathaway with a gorgeous spinning back elbow. Lombard is only on a two-fight win streak but has looked equally if not more impressive. Since dropping to welterweight, he’s smashed Nate Marquardt and sent Jake Shields out of the UFC.

It’s a shame these matches will only air on Fight Pass.
