It’s been quite the ride for Tony Ferguson this year, as he’s had opponents pull out left and right throughout the course of his 2015 season.

Ferguson was originally set to meet grappling phenom Khabib Nurmagomedov at The Ultimate Fighter Season 22 Finale (TUF 22 Finale), however, the Russian was forced to pull out of the contest due to an injury.

Michael Johnson was briefly scheduled to meet ‘El Cucuy’ at UFC 196, but Johnson was also forced to pull out due to injury and was replaced by Nurmagomedov at UFC on FOX 19. Unfortunately Ferguson suffered an injury of his own that forced him out of the Nurmagomedov contest, and would later be scheduled against Michael Chiesa at UFC Fight Night 91.

Alas the injury bug would strike again, as Chiesa injured his back during training camp and would be replaced by UFC newcomer Landon Vannata. Vannata and Ferguson put on quite the show at last night’s (July 13, 2016) UFC Fight Night 91, as Vannata almost got the better of the lightweight veteran with a thunderous head-kick in the first round.

USATSI_9382945_168382968_lowresFerguson would ultimately go on to submit Vannata after surviving the rookie’s striking clinic in the first round, and proceeded to call out the newly-crowned UFC lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez, as well as Nurmagomedov whom he has missed two previous set dates with.

Following the contest Ferguson joined FOX Sports, courtesy of MMA Fighting, to discuss his performance against Vannata as well as crediting the Jackson-Wink product for his impressive performance:

“We were preparing for Michael Chiesa,” Ferguson said. “So, I think if anything, I was just more prepared for a wrestler and I underestimated his [Vannata] standup, but after just getting hit a couple of times, it’s exactly what I wanted and that’s just the type of fighter I am, and I battled through it, and took some of his hardest shots, and put fear in his face.”

120415-ufc-Tony-Ferguson-pi-mp.vresize.1200.675.high.3With his victory over Vannata, ‘El Cucuy’ is ready for title contention and proceeded to call out 155-pound champ Alvarez and the No. 2-ranked Nurmagomedov to throw down with him next:

“All my performances are right there to put me on title contention,” said Ferguson. “This fight was a short-notice fight. I know he wasn’t ranked, but it was a very risky chance to come in there and take the short-notice fight.

Props to Lando Vannata and props to JacksonWink over in Albuquerque, but every single fight is there and I’m ready for it. If Eddie Alvarez wants to sign that dotted line, or if he wants an easy fight, go ahead and fight Conor [McGregor], but I’m a hard type fight.

I’m not someone to joke around with. And with [Rafael dos Anjos], you have Khabib Nurmagomedov. I’d love to get that fight against Khabib and maybe we’ll go on The Ultimate Fighter show and put on a show for the fans.”

Who do you think Ferguson should step into the Octagon next, has he done enough to earn a shot at the coveted UFC lightweight strap?

Faced with the toughest test of his UFC career when he met No. 6-ranked Michael McDonald in the main event of last night’s (Wed., July 13, 2016) UFC Fight Night 91 from the Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, surging bantamweight John Lineker delivered one of the most scintillating MMA knockouts of the year.

The previously No. 8-ranked ‘Hands Of Stone’ has been on an absolute tear, winning his last five bouts in the octagon, which includes a three-fight win streak with two finishes back at 135 pounds when he was forced to abandon his quest for the flyweight title after repeatedly missing weight.

But it could be argued that Lineker possesses even more power at bantamweight, and that’s a scary thing for the rest of the suddenly stacked division. After the win and in a post-fight interview with UFC on FOX, Lineker called out champion Dominick Cruz for the next title shot at 135 pounds:

While he’s certain to rise up the ranks after such an emphatic knockout over McDonald, the path to a title shot may not be so cut and dry for Lineker.

Former champion TJ Dillashaw just beat previous No. 4 Raphael Assuncao at last weekend’s UFC 200 and wants a rematch with Cruz after their ultra-close match at UFC Fight Night 81, Bryan Caraway is angling for a shot himself, and similiary surging contender Cody Garbrandt will take on Takeya Mizugaki at September’s UFC 203 and could be inching closer to a shot at the belt himself.

Taking that into consideration, do you believe Lineker already deserves a title shot, or does he need one (or more) high-profile wins before he summits that mountaintop? Cast your vote right here:

Eight consecutive wins.

Six finishes, including five submissions.

Taking out a former champion and an unbeaten prospect on short notice.

There is no denying that Tony Ferguson is the top contender to new UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez anymore.

Ferguson remained on the UFC Fight Night 91 card Wednesday night, taking everything that the unbeaten Lando Vannata threw at him through five minutes. Once Ferguson, a former Ultimate Fighter winner, was settled in, he turned it to another level.

Having not fought since late in 2015, “El Cucuy” admitted after that he “needed to get punched in the face” to get back in the rhythm of fighting. Vannata did just that, sparking an uprising when he floored Ferguson.

After sitting in his corner for a brief moment, the third-ranked lightweight came out and locked up a D’arce choke on Vannata in just over two minutes, forcing the youngster to tap out. He has also submitted Edson Barboza, Gleison Tibau, Abel Trujillo and Mike Rio since a 2012 decision loss to Michael Johnson.

Since making his Octagon debut in 2011 with a first round knockout of Ramsey Nijem that gave him the TUF title, the Johnson setback remains the lone blemish on Ferguson’s career.

Following his win, he called out Alvarez for a shot at the belt, mentioning an “easier” fight for the champion being Conor McGregor – which is what Alvarez said after his finish of Rafael dos Anjos last week.

And while that is the “money” fight to make for Alvarez, McGregor is tied up. Put him vs. Ferguson and give the fans another “Fight of the Year” to debate over.

John Lineker made a statement at UFC Fight Night 91 Wednesday night, knocking out former title challenger Michael McDonald with a first round flurry.

Lineker claimed his fifth consecutive win in the process and likely a title-eliminator bout for his next time inside the Octagon. He showed off that same power that caused many to believe he was a flyweight contender before weight-cutting issues forced his move to bantamweight.

Following the win, the Brazilian called out UFC champion Dominick Cruz.
