In all honest, the real “People’s Main Event” for UFC Fight Night 91 was removed when Michael Chiesa bowed out with an injury.

Chiesa vs. Tony Ferguson in a meeting of former Ultimate Fighter winners and lightweight contenders was a sure-fire “Fight of the Year” candidate.

Now, we must look down the main card for another worthy contender for the “PME.”

And we got a good one, folks.

If you aren’t completely burnt out after International Fight Week, make sure you do not miss Wednesday night’s Tim Boetsch-Josh Samman contest.

This is your typical veteran vs. top prospect.

Boetsch (18-10) finds himself in a must-win situation after three consecutive losses to Ed Herman, Dan Henderson and Thales Leites. The two most recent ones have been knockouts, including a 28-second finish vs. Henderson.

But the 35-year-old is never in boring fights and is just a few years removed from a series of wins over the likes of Hector Lombard and Yushin Okami that had him talking about the title. In fact, Boetsch actually faced off against former champion Luke Rockhold in 2014.

Samman (12-3) had his four-fight win streak snapped by Tamdan McCrory last December when he was caught with a triangle choke in the third round. The former Ultimate Fighter competitor had scored back-to-back-to-back finishes vs. Caio Magalhaes, Eddie Gordon and Kevin Casey to begin his UFC run.

The 28-year-old Floridan is a finisher, as he owns 11 career knockout or submission wins to his credit, while two of his three defeats have also come early. Both wins over Gordon and Magalhaes earned him “Performance of the Night” honors.

The UFC has been forced to make several changes to the upcoming UFC Fight Night 91 card, but this is the first that involves a fight completely being removed.

Officials announced that a planned featherweight encounter between Ryan Hall and Alex White will not take place due to White suffering an injury. The card will not receive another bout, and Hall will not get a new opponent.

Hall (5-1) earned his lone win inside the Octagon when he defeated Artem Lobov to become a winner of The Ultimate Fighter 22. White (11-2) has split his four UFC appearances evenly.

UFC Fight Night 91 takes place July 13 from Sioux Falls, South Dakota and features Michael McDonald vs. John Lineker in the main event.

Red hot No. 3-ranked UFC lightweight contender Tony “El Cucuy” Ferguson has won an ultra-impressive seven straight and was slated to main event the upcoming UFC Fight Night 91 card on July 13, 2016 opposite No. 10-ranked Michael “Maverick” Chiesa. Yesterday (June 27, 2016), however, it was reported that Chiesa had suffered a back injury that would force him to withdraw from the bout.

According to a report from MMAJunkie, the UFC has called upon a new opponent for Ferguson, but it’s come at a price, as “El Cucuy” has lost his main event slot. Instead, he will now co-headline the card in a clash with UFC newcomer Landon Vannata.

Vannata, a member of the famed Jackson-Winklejohn Gym in New Mexico, boasts an impressive undefeated professional record of 8-0 with seven stoppages. He will undoubtedly be jumping up in competition and facing off with his toughest test to date when he meets Ferguson.

“El Cucuy” was most recently seen scoring a victory over deadly striker Edson Barboza. He was then slated to take on top contender and undefeated phenom Khabib “The Eagle” Nurmagomedov in April, but he was forced to withdraw from the bout with a lung injury.

Moving up into the main event spot will be an intriguing bantamweight bout between former title challenger Michael “Mayday” MacDonald and Brazilian slugger John “Hands of Stone” Lineker.

UFC Fight Night 91 will go down from the Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Bantamweights Michael McDonald and John Lineker have taken over the main event role for UFC Fight Night 91.

A planned headline fight pitting Tony Ferguson vs. Mike Chiesa was scrapped when Chiesa bowed out due to a back injury. Ferguson will remain on the card, taking on newcomer Landon Vannata.

McDonald (17-3) and Lineker (27-7) have a combined Octagon record of 14-4. They are both right on the edge of contention in the stacked bantamweight division.

Vannata (8-0) will try to spoil the run put together by Ferguson (20-3), who has gone 10-1 in his UFC career.

UFC Fight Night 91 takes place July 13 from the Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

After his second round submission victory of Beneil Dariush at UFC on FOX 19, former Ultimate Fighter Season 15 (TUF 15) winner Michael Chiesa proceeded to call out No. 3-ranked Tony Ferguson to a 155-pound clash.

Ferguson gladly accepted the contest and the two were set to square off in the main event of UFC Fight Night 91 in July.

Sadly Ferguson revealed on Twitter today that due to an unfortunate back injury suffered in training camp, he has been forced to pull out of the highly-anticipated lightweight bout:

“To my family, friends and fans. As reported below, a back injury has forced me out of my scheduled fight for July 13th against Tony Ferguson. During a routine training session, I felt a pop and shift in my lower back followed by very very sharp pains that left me on the floor.

I found out today I have a fully ruptured disk, I will undergo 8 weeks of physical therapy and rehab to hopefully avoid having to go under the knife and get back surgery. Thanks to everyone that supports me, my teammates and coaches, the city of Spokane and all my fans around the world. I’ll be back stronger. – Mav”

The UFC is currently in the process of finding Ferguson a new opponent.

UFC Fight Night 91 is set to go down live on FS1 from the Denny Stanford Primiere Center, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on July 13, 2016.
