The UFC hype machine is crucial in the development and promotion of new superstars, something the promotion seems to be lacking in the early going of 2018.

While some of these uber-hyped fighters have gone on to big things in the sport of MMA, many more have fallen by the wayside, never living up to the lofty expectations the UFC and fight fans placed upon them.

Sometimes it’s the fighters who hype themselves up to almost unattainable levels, other times the fans or promoters. Still, the result is always the same, and almost never ends well.

We broke down the eight worst hype train derailments below, so check them out and let us know what you think.

8. Sage Northcutt

While Northcutt’s young age could eventually preclude him from this list, the amount of hype he garnered following his successful UFC debut ultimately made for a deflating hype train derailment.

Northcutt had and has the perfect appeal for a UFC hype job; blonde hair, ridiculously chiseled physique, a fan-friendly striking game, and a sort of charming naïveté made him easy to promote. He TKO’d his inaugural UFC opponent in a minute flat, but from there the wheels began falling off of this hype train.

The first sign that Northcutt might not be the world-beater we thought he was was in his third Octagon appearance, where the young Texas native submitted to an arm-triangle choke against the unheralded Bryan Barbarena in 2016. Then, in what amounted to a battle of hyped-up prospects, Mickey Gall submitted him with a rear-naked choke, prompting fans and pundits to question Northcutt’s submission defense and overall potential.

At just 22 years old with a 10-2 MMA record, Northcutt could absolutely turn it around and become a contender within the next few years. However, the UFC’s attempt to hype and push him into relevancy so quickly obviously worked against him.

Time will tell whether or not Northcutt will live up to the hype first placed upon him back in 2015.

Last month, Uriah Hall was forced to withdraw from a scheduled bout against Vitor Belfort at UFC Fight Night 124 after he collapsed on route to the weigh-ins. Hall then spent 48 hours in the hospital and he claims that he had suffered a ‘slight heart attack’ and a ‘mini seizure’.

After the initial fallout, however, UFC President Dana White said that Hall wasn’t taking his training serious and that he was out partying in clubs.

Hall has since denied those claims and his coach, Eric Nicksick, who was present during the situation, recently expressed his disappointment in White’s remarks:

“It’s tough, especially when your employer is the first one to bag on you,” Nicksick told MMAjunkie Radio. “I think what really hurt me was, this guy almost died for your organization.”

At the end of the day, Nicksick understands that White likely lost money due to Hall’s withdrawal, but everyone involved did, and the coach is simply content with the fact that his fighter is alive and well:

“Uriah was upset,” he said. “He’s like, ‘I thought me and Dana were friends.’ (I said), ‘Yeah, maybe, but you (expletive) with that dude’s money. So don’t get all upset about it thinking you guys were all chummy.

“At the end of the day, none of us get paid, (and) it was an eight-week camp. But my guy’s alive.”

And that’s the key part here given the fact that Nicksick also said that he wasn’t sure if Hall ‘was going to make it out’:

“Honest to god truth, I didn’t know if we was going to make it out,” Nicksick said. “(I said), ‘Don’t call the doctor – call the paramedics.”

“He did not feel like he even had a heartbeat,” Nicksick said. “His pulse was thready. He was unconscious and unresponsive. And all the while he was trying to make it down that (expletive) elevator to weigh in for (White). And all he kept saying was, ‘I’ve never missed weight. I’ve never missed weight.’

“And then for you to go on and bash your guy without all the facts, without hearing the story, without knowing what happened. Maybe he did (go to Los Angeles), maybe he caught wind of some things. But I was at the (Performance Institute) with him Tuesdays and Thursdays training.”

Should White have reserved his judgement until all of the facts were made known?

You have to be tough to fight in the UFC, but there are some limits that even these warriors are not expected to push beyond.

Nevertheless, no matter how dire the circumstances, some UFC stars appear to have an ingrained ‘never say die’ attitude that enables to push on through the pain barrier when even some of their most battle-hardened contemporaries would have called it quits.

In this article we’ll pay tribute to this rare breed as we recall 10 instances in which fighters suffered gruesome, agonizing injuries in the Octagon, yet still battled on regardless.

Rich Franklin

When former middleweight champion Rich Franklin stepped in to replace Tito Ortiz against hall of famer Chuck Liddell at UFC 115 in 2010 he knew that he was facing a wounded lion, with ‘The Iceman’ having been given an ultimatum by Dana White that if he didn’t win he would have to hang up his gloves.

With his career on the line, Liddell came out strong and started throwing powerful kicks instead of just relying on loading up with his often battle-tested right hand.

That proved to be bad news for Franklin, as just a minute into the fight had to block a thundering head kick attempt, which caused a clean break to the ulna bone in his left forearm.

This was a nightmare scenario for Franklin, but he did well to disguise his discomfort and kept fighting, even daring to continue to punch with his broken left arm at times while also posting on the damaged limb to get back to his feet after being taken down.

In the final minute of the round, Liddell thought he had Franklin in trouble and began upping the intensity, driving forward looking for a highlight-reel finish.

However, just then the wounded ‘Ace’ stood his ground, bit down on his mouthpiece and unleashed a short right hand that connected flush and knocked Liddell out cold for a classic against-all-odds victory.

Former The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 17 finalist Uriah Hall was scheduled to take on Vitor Belfort in the co-main event of last weekend’s (Jan. 14, 2018) UFC Fight Night 124, but the bout was scrapped just a day before the event after Hall was forced to withdraw due to health reasons.

Upon the news, many had speculated that Hall had failed to make weight, but that wasn’t the case.

In fact, he did make weight, but he recently revealed that he suffered a ‘mini-seizure’ and a ‘slight heart attack’:

“For the record, I did make weight, I just failed to make it to the scale, which sucked,” Hall said on Instagram Live (via MMA Junkie). “I think I had a mini-seizure and at the same time a slight heart attack. My kidneys were just not good. The doctor even said, even if I made weight, I probably would’ve died the next day because my body wasn’t having it.”

After the event. UFC President Dana White said that he’d hear rumors indicating that Hall simply wasn’t taking things seriously. Hall, however, laughed those claims off, labeling them as nothing more than ‘speculation’.

Prior to his scheduled fight with Belfort, Hall had lost three of his previous four bouts, dropping losses to Robert Whittaker, Derek Brunson and Gegard Mousasi before picking up a victory over Krzystof Jotko.
