Cub Swanson explains the reason why the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) helped lead him to re-signing with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). There was a time when Swanson contemplated his fighting future. The fifth ranked UFC featherweight decided to fight out of his contract ahead of his bout with Brian Ortega. Longtime MMA great Anderson Silva was recently cleared to return to the Octagon soon.
It appeared “The Spider’s” otherwise decorated career had been tarnished and was possibly over when he failed a second drug test prior to his scheduled main event with Kelvin Gastelum at last fall’s UFC Singapore, yet he was able to fight the case with USADA and prove his failed test was the result of a contaminated supplement prescribed to him by a Brazilian pharmacy.
Able to return on November 10, 2018, Silva has been back in the headlines for a variety of topics, including his callout of UFC double champ Daniel Cormier when “DC” claimed failed tests disqualified he and Jon Jones from being in the conversation for the greatest fighter of all-time. Silva took a different road on a recent appearance on “Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show,” however, detailing that he lost sponsors due to the perceived violation (transcribed by MMA Mania).
He’s now moving on, of course, but did lose money and more importantly, credibility in the ordeal:
“I was working with USADA on the case, and now I move on, it’s over for me. In my personal opinion, it’s very difficult to be put in that situation, for everybody, when you don’t have solution for the case,” he added. “In that situation, I lose my sponsors, I lose my credibility. So yeah, it is very terrible. But, now that is finished. Now I am just waiting on the future. But, I did lose money, my credibility. It’s tough. The situation tried to destroy my mind, destroy my legacy … my emotional is very terrible.”
Silva is far from the only UFC combatant to have failed a test due to contaminated supplements, with heavyweight veterans Josh Barnett and Junior dos Santos both avoiding lengthy suspensions from similar situations.
Barnett ultimately requested his release in order to not have to deal with USADA, suing the supplement company who caused him to fail the test in the process. Silva said he wouldn’t be doing that, instead switching to a team of doctors in the United States:
“Definitely not. I moved all my team, my doctors for U.S. All my team I change. I’m working hard for the future now.”
With the disgrace of USADA behind him for now,”The Spider” will now move on to focus on his next match-up, which has been rumored to potentially be with rising prospect Israel Adesanya – a man many have compared to a young Silva.
Should he be tasked with such a dangerous opponent after going through so much just to be able to fight again?

The UFC got some good news this week when word came that longtime former middleweight champion Anderson Silva had been exonerated by USADA.
True, at 43 years old, “The Spider” isn’t quite what he once was.
However, it was probably been more important to his legacy to have a potential second failed drug test reversed. Silva was still suspended for one year, yet the fact that he was found to have tested positive last fall due to a contaminated supplement rather than a second banned substance certainly helps his rapidly tarnishing reputation.
So Silva can return to action on November 10th, and not surprisingly, a lot of top middleweights would like the fight.
Perhaps one of the most interesting match-ups – although it would be extremely dangerous for “The Spider” – is a striker’s dream match-up with surging No. 9 Israel Adesanya, who recently bulldozed onto the rankings with a five-round domination of previous No. 8 contender Brad Tavares this month.
“The Last Stylebender” recently called out his apparent onetime idol on social media this week, saying that while Silva was the GOAT, he still wanted to face him in a fight with ‘no takedowns’:
…or you guys want this fight instead?! Yo for real…no bullshit, if not for @spiderandersonsilva I wouldn’t have looked at fighting from a different perspective. I was under the impression you gotta look like Paula to be a fighter. The Spider been ******* up muscled up beefcakes since ages ago as an lean aerodynamic man. He is still the g.o.a.t imo… With that being said…I want #alldashmoke. Just cuz I’m a fan don’t mean you can’t catch these hands…and feets. So yes I am down…will do it fih di culture of fighting! #babygoat#workuntilyouridolsbecomeyourrivals#enterthematrix #iwillattack#notakedownsipromise
Silva has been out of action since a close and controversial decision win over Derek Brunson in early 2017, his first official win since a 2012 knockout of Stephan Bonnar.
Adesanya, meanwhile, has become arguably the hottest young prospect in the UFC, drawing comparisons to both “the Spider” and Jon Jones for his lean, rangy physique and fluid striking.
Considering how easy he made it look for Tavares, this may be too much for Silva at his age. What do you think? Is it a good match-up for the MMA great to return to?
The United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) formed Oct., 1, 2000, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Just a few months later, Congress recognized USADA as the official anti-doping agency of the Pan American Games, the Paralympics, and the Olympics.
USADA has been at the forefront of anti-doping in athletics for nearly two decades, helping catch cheaters and level the playing field in sports such as boxing, cycling, and swimming, just to name a few. On July, 1, 2015, mixed martial arts became the latest sport to work hand in hand with the non-profit organization, specifically the UFC.
The USADA-UFC experiment is just over three years old now, and at times it would appear they have been doing exactly what they were brought in to do. That is, help mitigate the doping going on in the UFC. But other times, the fight game has been left scratching its head in disbelieve at the inconsistency of it all.
It’s lead to several high-profile suspensions nonetheless, some with suspicious circumstances and some that were more clear-cut.
We took a look back at the eight biggest suspensions of the USADA-UFC era right here:
Chad Mendes
Chad “Money” Mendes returned to action at UFC Boise last weekend (July 14, 2018) after serving a two-year suspension for testing positive for a growth hormone releasing hexapeptide (GHRP-6).
The Team Alpha Male fighter denied knowingly taking any banned substance but did offer up a possible explanation for the failed test. Mendes said he has a condition known as plaque psoriasis and perhaps some of the cream he used to treat his ailment was tainted with the substance in question.
Whether you believe Mendes or not, it makes no difference. “Money” received a two-year suspension for his failed out-of-competition sample that was collected on May 17, 2016.
Oddly enough Mendes chose not to appeal the failed test and thus is perhaps culpable at some level.
