Seven Reasons Why UFC Ratings Are Worse Than Ever

The action in the Octagon has been solid, but ratings are not. Here’s why.

If you are a mixed martial arts fan, and I assume you are if you’re reading this list, it’s obvious the landscape of MMA has drastically changed in the last several years. So much so, in some instances, the sport is nearly unrecognizable.

It’s fair to point out that all major sports are suffering from a “new era” of content consumption and MMA is no different. But why has MMA, and in particular, the UFC suffered such a drastic decline in viewership these last few years, with cards on FOX Sports 1 and FOX bringing some of the lowest numbers ever and even a superfight-headlined card like UFC 226 earning only a reported 400,000 buys?

We here at Lowkick have compiled a list of the seven reasons why the UFC ratings are worse than ever. Check them out:

Too Many Shows

We could have worded this many different ways, but the fact remains the same, the MMA industry is simply way too oversaturated. There may be only a handful of high-level promotions operation in today’s combat sports climate; the UFC, Bellator, and the PFL come to mind. But rest assured, there are dozens of regional promotions that contribute to the weekly blitz of mixed martial arts.

In 2017 the UFC hosted a total of 39 events (including 12 PPVs, 4 UFC on FOX, 2 TUF Finales). The UFC is scheduled to hit that very same mark this year, once again reaching 39 events in a 12-month span. Compare that to 41, which was the number of events the Endeavor-owned promotion promoted in 2016.

It’s not necessarily that the UFC is solely responsible for the oversaturation of MMA; the numbers just don’t support that claim. But there was a time, not too long ago, that the only MMA on TV was the UFC, and even that was challenging to find the proper channel at times.

The sheer number of events makes each week’s card less special, and both the PPV buys and TV ratings show that.

Chad Mendes Calls UFC Boise ‘Biggest Fight Of His Life’ After USADA Suspension

With his two-year USADA suspension complete, Chad Mendes looks to smash Myles Jury

The post Chad Mendes Calls UFC Boise ‘Biggest Fight Of His Life’ After USADA Suspension appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

Two years is a long time – 730 days to be exact.

That was the sentence imposed on Chad “Money” Mendes by USADA for failing an out of competition drug test on June 10th, 2016, for GHRP-6 – a growth hormone-releasing Hexapeptide.

UFC Boise will mark the return of the Team Alpha Male standout when he takes on dangerous featherweight Myles Jury in a FOX Sports 1-televised main card bout.

Speaking with MMA Junkie, Mendes detailed how the time off was almost a blessing in disguise.

“I’m feeling great, and I’m feeling excited,” said Mendes. “I’ve got that hunger back. I feel almost rejuvenated. My body feels good – the bumps and bruises.”

“Probably about the past four years, getting up in the morning, my feet were just so bruised and beat up from kicking and getting stepped on and stubbing your toes during practice. It’s just nice. Everything feels back to normal, I’m ready to go.”

Mendes denied knowing taking any kind of banned substance or performance-enhancing drugs but later postulated the positive test may have been the result of a cream he used to treat psoriasis.

“It was my own damn fault,” Mendes said. “I should have paid attention. I did the time. I’m not going to sit there and make up a bunch of excuses and try to get out of it. …”

The former two-time title contender has taken responsibly for the failed test, however, Mendes stands by his assertion of unknowingly consuming a banned substance. Be that as it may, hindsight is 20/20 and “Money” wishes he would’ve contested USADA’s final ruling.

“When they told me two years, at that time, honestly I was frustrated. I was embarrassed. I was just like, ‘Screw it. I’ll do my time. I just want to step away from all this.’ About halfway through it, I was like, ‘I wish I would have tried to fight it a little bit.’”

USADA, like anything else, isn’t always going to get it right. Take the recent Josh Barnett situation for example. Barnett harbors such negative feelings for the organization that he elected to be released from the UFC in order to pursue other options. Mendes may not be on the best of terms with USADA, but he fully understands their place in the MMA landscape.

“I think it’s great, just keeping blatant cheating stuff out of the sport,” Mendes said. “A lot of that stuff was getting overlooked and getting through. I think there are some petty stuff that we can probably fine-tuned. In my opinion, the tainted supplements even. There’s no way for us to know that. If I go to the store and buy amino acids, I’m planning on taking amino acids, which are 100 percent legal.”

“There’s no way for me to know there’s something illegal in there, and if there’s something the company tries to sneak in there to make their product sell better, by people saying, ‘I feel great when I take this, and I’m looking good,’ how is that our fault?”

The matchmakers didn’t do Mendes any favors in his return to the octagon, offering up a talented “Fury” to the Team Alpha Male star.

“For me to get back there and fight a guy like Myles, who is a guy that is all right going into my world,” Mendes said. “He’s OK wrestling. He trains with (Dominick) Cruz and those guys, so I’m sure they wrestle a lot. He’s OK being on his back.”

“I’m treating this like it’s the biggest fight of my life – and it is,” Mendes said. “This is a fight that I need to go out there and prove to people (that) I’m back. I didn’t leave. I took a little bit of time off, but I’m still an animal. I’m still going to go out there and try to knock your head off. I can take you down when I want and put that pressure on you.”

“Money” is hoping he will not miss a beat in his return to the cage at UFC Boise, but more importantly, Mendes want people to remember what kind of fighter he was – and still is.

“That’s the type of Chad that I want people to remember and see back in the octagon now and be like, ‘(Expletive), this guy never left.’ That’s the plan. I’m going to go out there and try to do that and if I get that win, which hopefully I do, I would like to fight someone in the top five right off the bat.”

JDS Destroys UFC Rankings For Brock Lesnar Title Shot

JDS slams UFC rankings and voices his concern for “cheat” Brock Lesnar title shot

The post JDS Destroys UFC Rankings For Brock Lesnar Title Shot appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

The pushback against Brock Lesnar’s upcoming UFC heavyweight title shot rolls on.

Dana White and the UFC had to know that Lesnar’s return to the octagon at last Saturday night’s (July, 7th, 2018) UFC 226 was going to ruffle some feathers, and indeed it has, with many top fighters and media members expressing disdain at the UFC granting Lesnar a title shot without a real win in eight years.

The latest fighter to voice his displeasure is former heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos, who will meet Blagoy Ivanov in the main event of this weekend’s UFC Boise. “Cigano,” who was scheduled to face Lesnar back in 2011, isn’t excited at how the situation has transpired.

Speaking to the Brazilian media (via MMA Fighting) on Wednesday, the No. 8-ranked dos Santos was a bit befuddled at the way the entire post-fight circus played out, if only because it tainted Daniel Cormier’s win of his second UFC title.

”The return of Brock Lesnar didn’t surprise me,” dos Santos said. “What surprised me was Cormier, a two-division champion living the moment he was living, the most special moment of his career, calling out Brock Lesnar inside the Octagon. I didn’t understand it, actually. I was shocked with the situation, it became theatrical. It was kind of ridiculous.”

However, after hearing the newly crowned double champ explain his actions in the octagon post-fight, Cormier’s actions become much more clear to dos Santos.

”I was watching the press conference later and he was explaining that Brock Lesnar is a guy that sells a lot of pay-per-view,” dos Santos said, “So it will be a fight that involves a lot of money for him as well, and he’s getting an easy fight… Not that it’s easy, but it’s an easier fight with a lot to gain financially.”

The concerns the Brazilin heavyweight has voiced are perhaps a moot point if he doesn’t take care of business in the main event of this weekend’s UFC Boise.

The more pressing issue, perhaps, is that dos Santos feels slighted by the UFC, and to be specific, the ranking system that has the Brazilian in an uproar.

”That’s completely unfair, but we know that rankings don’t work in the UFC,” dos Santos said. “Rankings are based on a weird policy, but it’s not cool to see Brock Lesnar skipping the line especially because he didn’t stop fighting because he chose to, he failed a drug test for s”

He was cut by USADA and now he returns like it’s something positive, but it’s not. He adds nothing to the sport. He’s a guy that cheats. The only benefit he brings is that people really like watching him, that big guy.”omething he has always used, you can clearly see it.”

“The Beast” has officially re-entered the USADA testing pool but he will need to serve the remaining six months on his suspension if the Cormier vs. Lesnar megafight is to take place. Dos Santos, like many fans and fighters alike, believes Lesnar cant stay off of PEDs long enough for one of the biggest heavyweight fights in UFC history to happen.

“I’ve learned that those who use those types of performance drugs can’t stay without them because they don’t produce testosterone the way they did, they don’t produce HGH they way they should, and many other hormones,” dos Santos said. “To compete at high level, these guys can’t do without it. I don’t know what will be his strategy, but it’s almost certain that he won’t be clean.”
