Vitor Belfort is one of a few mixed martial artists to have professional boxing experience. Although he only competed once in the ring, Belfort is well known as one of the most dangerous strikers in the UFC.

Naturally, ‘The Phenom’ was asked about how boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr. would fare in MMA following his boxing bout with Conor McGregor in August.

Belfort was quite dismissive of Mayweather’s chances:

“I think he doesn’t have a chance even against the young kids, 15, 14-year-olds. I don’t think he has a chance, no. He has a lot to learn on the ground, kicks. I think it’s an illusion (to say) that happens, unless it’s different rules or a fight in his world.

“With his arms, on his weight, he’s a phenom. Now, involving legs and other things, no chance.”

“There are many (promotions). We have the Russian billionaires, millions of places. The UFC itself. The UFC has a lot of money, they only need to do cards that sell. A fight between me and Chuck Liddell, Tito Ortiz, bring Randy Couture back. How wouldn’t that sell, the league of legends?”

Mayweather defeated McGregor by TKO in the tenth round after a spirited display from the UFC superstar. The two have bantered back and forth ever since, with talks of a rematch under MMA rules exciting combat fans of both sports.

Belfort, however, clearly doesn’t share that enthusiasm.

Do you agree with Belfort’s assumption about Mayweather’s chances in MMA?

Vitor Belfort is calling it a career after his next fight.

Belfort is expected to face former UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida at the upcoming UFC 224 pay-per-view event. This will serve as his retirement fight.

If you recall, just back in January, he was slated to fight middleweight star Uriah Hall in a middleweight bout at UFC St. Louis, which would’ve marked Belfort’s retirement fight. However, that wasn’t the case.

It’s been well documented that Hall had a seizure as a result of a bad weight cut that ultimately led to him being hospitalized.

Belfort addressed his decision to retire from the sport in a recent interview with MMAJunkie.

“What have we learned from this? So many things,” Belfort said. “Now all that’s left is looking forward. The fight is here. It’s a great opponent. In a way, things were even better. God was so good to me that they gave me a better opponent. A better location. That’s what life is made of: using the stones in our way to help shape our way.”

“It’s what I said: in reality, it will be my final fight and my journey is ending,” Belfort said. “But nothing that a good contract – what, seven digits? – can’t do in terms of helping us return. I’ll keep training. I love doing this. But there needs to be a meaning. There needs to be a purpose and it needs to be something that makes sense.”

“In reality, I never stop,” Belfort said. “I’m always sticking to my routine. I train, I have Belfort Lifestyle Fitness now. I’m always active – always on the move.”

“I have many ideas, but I’m focused on what I have to do and on my work,” Belfort said. “That’s what I need to focus on, executing my work. I’m not worried about what’s coming from over there.”

UFC 224 is set to take place on Saturday, May 12, 2018, at the Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET while the preliminary card will air on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass.

Vitor Belfort

In October 1996, a 19-year-old Vitor Belfort took a plunge straight into the deep end of the MMA pool by agreeing to make his debut against Jon Hess at SuperBrawl 2 in Hawaii.

The teenager had to travel all the way from Brazil for the event despite the fact that he had nothing more than a verbal agreement and would only be paid if he won. Furthermore, the rookie was going up against a giant, as Hess stood 6′ 7” tall, weighed 300 pounds and was coming off an 83-second TKO victory at UFC 5.

As if that wasn’t enough, Hess was demanding that there be no rules, including things like groin strikes being legal.

”Tell him he can also go get a knife,” Belfort says his coach Carlson Gracie defiantly told SuperBrawl. “He can go get a gun. We’ll still fight him.”

Gracie’s confidence in his young protégé proved to be well-founded as ‘The Phenom’ would knock out Hess in just 12 seconds to instantly put himself on the MMA map.

UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes will defend her belt against Raquel Pennington at UFC 224, Combate reported on Friday.

Nunes (15-4) will be defending her belt for the first time on her home soil in Rio de Janeiro on May 12. The Brazilian is on a six-fight win streak, having violently taken the title from Miesha Tate before TKOing former champion Ronda Rousey in less than a minute, and will look to secure her third title defense against Pennington, who herself is on an impressive four-fight win streak.

Pennington (9-5) is coming off of a nasty leg injury due to a hunting accident following her dominant victory over Tate at UFC 205 in 2016. While talks of a super fight with UFC women’s featherweight champion Cris Cyborg gained steam recently, it appears as though both women will be defending their belts separately before fighting each other.

Brazilian legends Lyoto Machida and Vitor Belfort will throw down elsewhere on the card, as well as Jacare Souza vs. Kelvin Gastelum.

Part of the reason mixed martial arts is so exciting is that when you lock two trained fighters in the cage, anything can happen and fights end in all kinds of different ways, from thrilling knockouts to slick submissions.

However, sometimes those finishes come in bizarre ways that absolutely no one saw coming, and in this article, we’ll shine a light on those freakish, unfathomable fight conclusions from the earliest days of the UFC through to the present day.

Galore Bofando vs. Charlie Ward

Over the years in the UFC we’ve occasionally seen fighters knocked out by slams, but never quite in the way it went down at UFC Fight Night 113 last year when Galore Bofando fought Charlie Ward.

The two fighters were engaged in the clinch midway through the first round when Ward suddenly attempted to take his opponent to the mat.

However, Bofando responded by attempting a reversal and then in mid-air just roughly shoved Ward to the mat like a sack of potatoes.

As a result, the already off-balance Ward was sent flying face-first into the canvas at high speed and was instantly rendered unconscious, handing Bofando a highlight-reel KO in his Octagon debut.
