There’s been a ton of speculation on if Eddie Alvarez could be returning to Bellator MMA.

Bellator MMA President Scott Coker was asked about the matter by MMA Fighting at Bellator 206 media day. In regards to seeing Alvarez back in Bellator, Coker said it doesn’t seem likely at this point. He admitted Bellator personnel spoke to Alvarez, but nothing came out of it :

“It doesn’t seem likely at this point,” Coker said. “I think that they had a conversation with Eddie and I’m not sure where it’s at. But I don’t think it took a second, it wasn’t like it was something that was picking up any steam so I’m not sure.”

Alvarez was previously with Bellator and was essentially the face of the promotion. He even competed on Bellator 1 in 2009. “The Underground King” put on a pair of absolute classic 155-pound title fights with Michael Chandler.

Unfortunately, the Philadelphia native didn’t get along too well with former promotion President Bjorn Rebney. He was later released from his contract in 2014 before signing with the UFC. Alvarez defeated Rafael dos Anjos via first-round knockout to win the UFC lightweight title in July of 2016.

Later that year, Alvarez would be one-half of one of the biggest fights in UFC history. He headlined the UFC’s first card from Madison Square Garden in New York City. Unfortunately for him, he dropped the 155-pound title to Conor McGregor via second-round knockout.

Alvarez fought out the final bout on his UFC contract this past July. He put on a heavy-hitting affair with Dustin Poirier in Calgary, which he lost via TKO. It will be interesting to see where “The Underground King” winds up.

Prepare for the biggest fight week, arguably, in UFC history.

Next weekend (Sat. October 6, 2018) Conor McGregor will make his highly-anticipated return to the Octagon. The Irishman will challenge Khabib Nurmagomedov for the 155-pound title. Title aside, McGregor and Nurmagomedov have some deeply personal issues with one another.

Last week, McGregor and Khabib participated in a press conference to promote the fight. Despite the fact that the event was still outrageous, it was not open to the public as per usual. McGregor’s press conference appearances are usually elevated by his rowdy Irish fans egging him on in the crowd.

While we didn’t get to witness that last week, fear not, for the return of the Irish is upon us. The UFC has announced that a second press conference is scheduled for this Thursday (October 4, 2018). McGregor and Khabib will verbally joust once again, but this time, it will be open to the public.

New York City played host to the first presser between McGregor and Khabib. Thursday’s festivities will take place from the Park Theater in Las Vegas, Nevada. The conference will kick off at 3:00 PT. McGregor, Khabib, and UFC President Dana White will all be present for the event.

For those of you in the Las Vegas area wishing to attend, admission is free. McGregor and Khabib will settle their differences inside the cage two days later. UFC 229 goes down live on pay-per-view (PPV) from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on October 6th.

The biggest fight possible in the UFC women’s flyweight division is official. UFC Canada announced this evening (Thurs., September 20, 2018) that Valentina Shevchenko vs. Joanna Jedrzejczyk has been signed.

The fight will go down at December 8’s UFC 231 from the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario:

Shevchenko was scheduled to meet Nicco Montano at September 8’s UFC 228. The plans fell apart when Montano fell ill. The UFC soon decided to strip her and vacate the title. debuted at 125 pounds with a brutal showing versus Priscila Cachoeira in February after two losses to women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes.

“Bullet” is the sort of uncrowned champion at 125 pounds due to her performance against larger opponents.

She’ll have to get past Jedrzejczyk to become the official champion. The former “Joanna Champion” suffered two straight losses to current champion Rose Namajunas. She rebounded with a decision win over Tecia Torres at UFC on FOX 30 this July. The vicious weight cut down to 115 pounds has clearly affected her in her recent bouts. Jedrzejczyk’s move was an expected one.

Shevchenko and Jedrzejczyk have actually fought three times in Muay Thai. “Bullet” won all three of the fights, which certainly should make her a solid favorite. Shevchenko has been largely flawless outside of her two fight with Nunes. Her well-round skillset makes her one of the most feared fighters in women’s mixed martial arts because of it.

Will she take home the women’s 125-pound title as a result?

This weekend’s (September 22, 2018) UFC Fight Night 137 (UFC Sao Paulo) at Ginásio do Ibirapuera in São Paulo, Brazil, has simply been a mess from the opening bell.

The main event was originally a light heavyweight match-up between Glover Teixeira and Jimi Manuwa. Teixeira was forced and Brazilian middleweight Thiago Santos stepped in to fight in his home country. Manuwa then withdrew from the fight himself due to injury.

Manuwa issued a statement on his withdrawal earlier today.

Middleweight Eryk Anders replaced him to meet Santos at light heavyweight. It was a dizzying series of events that lost Teixeira, Manuwa, Neil Magny, Tonya Evinger, and Ketlen Vieira due to injury.

The news is a concerning series of events for the UFC and fans. So much so that the promotion has offered refunds for anyone who purchased a ticket due to never-ending switch-ups. The refunds will be available until September 21.

UFC Sao Paulo promises to bring next to no mainstream value because of not only the injuries but the overall lack of star power even before them. The UFC’s Fight Nights on FOX Sports 1 have been struggling mightily all through this year. Let’s hope their new TV deal with ESPN changes that in 2019.

Earlier this month (Sat., September 8, 2018), UFC 228 lost one of its most important bouts for the pay-per-view event from American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.

It all went down at weigh-ins the day before the card when former women’s flyweight champion Nicco Montano was forced out her first scheduled title defense in the co-main event. Montano had not yet set foot into the Octagon since capturing the title as an unlikely winner on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 27 last December.

Because of the repeated issues with getting her into the octagon, the UFC made the call to strip Montano of her belt relatively quickly after she missed weighing in before UFC 228. Not many have come to her side in the time since, and one former champion who has been in a similar circumstance is one of them.

Former UFC women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk recently likened Montano’s miss at this weekend’s (Sat., September 15, 2018) UFC Moscow (via MMA Mania) to her own bad weight cut prior to her losing the title against Rose Namajunas at UFC 217 last year. It isn’t easy, but the former ‘Joanna Champion’ said the UFC was right to strip Montano because of what she did:

”Man, I paid the ultimate price, but I was on weight in November 2017,” she told media at UFC Fight Night Moscow. “I would do this the same because for me it’s a shame, us as fighters, athletes and champions to not be on weight.

”We need real and dedicated fighters and champions in the UFC. The UFC is the best organization in the world. There’s no space and time for bullsh**t like this. It was a very hard decision, very tough decision. I believe she is not happy but you must take this job very serious and you must be 100 percent in. Weight cuts are not easy, are not nice. But it’s part of our job and you shouldn’t complain and you must be on weight when you have to be.”

Now that women’s flyweight no longer has a champion, top-ranked Shevchenko is thought of as the uncrowned champion – something she was often called even before Montano missed weight.

It’s recently been rumored that Shevchenko will meet Jedrzejczyk, whom she’s already beaten in Muay Thai three times, for the flyweight title when the former women’s 115-pound champion ditches the draining weight cut to strawweight.

Jedrzejczyk cautioned that fans and media members pump the brakes a little, because while she does have an offer out it’s not set in stone:

”This fight is not on,” she said. “So of course I’ve got an offer, but we’ll see. I’m very open to fight Valentina Shevchenko. I always want to fight the best fighters, and definitely she is one of the top female fighters in the world.”

With a scene that can only be described as a mess at women’s flyweight, Shevchenko vs. Jedrzejczyk can only be described as by far the best fight the UFC has to offer in the weight class.

Shevchenko has seen two champions back out of fighting her at the last minute in just over a year, so they’d be best served to get it signed as soon as possible.

Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov will finally come face-to-face.

The Irishman and Russian will headline UFC 229 on pay-per-view (PPV) from the T-Mobile Arena next month (Sat. October 6, 2018). This will be McGregor’s first UFC fight in almost two years. He and Nurmagomedov have some very personal issues with one another.

Back in April, Nurmagomedov tried to intimidate McGregor’s close friend and training partner, Artem Lobov. This didn’t sit well with McGregor, who flew to New York himself and sought out “The Eagle.” McGregor threw a dolly through a window of a fighter bus that Nurmagomedov was on – injuring several other fighters in the process.

Now, McGregor and Nurmagomedov will get to settle their differences inside the cage with the 155-pound title on the line. Many have noticed, however, with the fight just weeks away not much press has been done for it.

Today (Wed. September 12, 2018) it was announced that McGregor and Nurmagomedov will finally meet at a press conference in New York next week. The press conference goes down live next Thursday (September 20, 2018) from the Radio City Music Hall in New York City at 5 P.M. ET.

McGregor, Nurmagomedov, and UFC President Dana White will be present for the event. The press conference will not be open to the public, as only credentialed media will be allowed to attend. It will, however, be streaming live on the UFC’s official YouTube channel.
