Earlier today (Sat. May 6, 2017) Canelo Alvarez downed Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in Las Vegas in what was dubbed as a Mexican Civil War inside the squared circle.

Through 12 rounds of boxing Alvarez completely out-classed his native adversary, taking home a lopsided unanimous decision win. It marked the Mexican star’s seventh consecutive win since being defeated by Floyd Mayweather Jr. back in 2013.

Throughout the bout Chavez seemed reluctant to engage and found it difficult to get into a solid rhythm. Alvarez laid back against the ropes multiple times in hopes of getting Chavez to engage, but continued to bludgeon Chavez with his superior accuracy.

Following the contest it was announced that Alvarez would challenge WBA, WBC, IBF, and IBO middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin next, finally answering the prayers of all hardcore boxing fans. The Kazakhstani is currently undefeated in his boxing career having amassed a record of 37-0.

The pair will throw down on September 16th of this year, with no further information being given.

Yair Rodriguez has some high expectations for his combat sports career.

‘El Pantera’ is approaching the biggest fight of his mixed martial arts (MMA) career, as he takes on former two-time featherweight title challenger Frankie Edgar at UFC 211 on pay-per-view (PPV) from Dallas, Texas. The Mexican comes off of a spectacular second round knockout win over returning UFC Hall Of Famer BJ Penn back in January.

Rodriguez is one of the most exciting fighters on the UFC’s roster today and could be on the verge of title contention with a win over Edgar. Currently the 24-year-old is working extremely hard to achieve his ultimate goal – becoming the best fighter in the world (quotes via MMA Junkie):

“What is happening to me, this is not luck,” Rodriguez said. “I work hard every day — like, really, really hard. My coach is here; he would slap me in the face if I lied. Every single aspect of my game, I work on every (expletive) day. I wake up thinking about it, I eat thinking of it, and I train thinking all my life is around just one thing, and that’s to become the best fighter in the world. That’s it.”

Currently the biggest combat sports star in the country of Mexico is none other than boxing’s Canelo Alvarez, but Rodriguez believes he can surpass his fellow Mexican’s level of superstardom:

“I can be bigger (than Alvarez),” Rodriguez said. “Mexican people, they already have a lot of boxing stars. But they don’t have an MMA star in Mexico. It’s just me. I’m going to be that star. I’m already a star in Mexico, but I’m going to be even bigger than that, because I have all the Latin American market behind me, and part of the United States market. I have all these advantages.

“A lot of people from Brazil and Russia and Europe, they follow me; they send me messages and follow me. I feel blessed.”

GGG Trashes Floyd Mayweather For Wanting To Fight Conor McGregor

Plenty of the biggest names in boxing are not happy with the rumored Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Conor McGregor boxing match talk going around, and Gennady Golovkin is one of them.

The WBC, IBF, and IBO Middleweight champion ‘GGG’ has made quite the name for himself since the departure of Mayweather from the boxing world, racking up a 36-0 record that includes 33 knockouts. Before he could challenge Mayweather in what would be a spectacle of an event, however, ‘Money’ walked away from the sport with an undefeated record of 49-0.

Golovkin recently joined ESPN’s First Take (quotes via MMA Mania) to discuss Mayweather’s plans to come out of retirement to fight McGregor, which the Kazakhstani believes is nothing more than a ‘commercial fight’ to save Mayweather’s record:

“It’s not too much interest for this fight because it’s a commercial fight, a businesses fight. It’s not boxing, it’s just very good for Floyd’s record,” said Golovkin.

‘GGG’ would love to get a crack at breaking Mayweather’s undefeated record, and is even willing to drop down to as low as 154 pounds in weight to make it happen:

“I’m not too big, I’m 65, after sparring I’m 64. For Floyd, I will go to 154 or 160 if he wants. This is a huge fight.”

While Mayweather chases down a huge payday against Conor McGregor, Golovkin is trying to make a big money fight of his own happen against Mexican star Canelo Alvarez. Alvarez is booked to take on Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. next on May 6th, while Golovkin is booked to square off against Daniel Jacobs on March 18th from Madison Square Garden.

If each man wins their respective upcoming fights it is likely they will finally meet inside the ring next.

WBO light middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez isn’t too pleased with the possibility that UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather could be throwing down inside the boxing ring soon.

TMZ Sports recently caught up with the Mexican boxing star, who’s only career loss comes at the hands of ‘Money’, who told them that the talk of a possible superfight between ‘The Notorious One’ and Mayweather is a ‘joke.’ Alvarez took it a step further by calling the potential match-up ‘disrespectful to boxing.’

This isn’t the first time McGregor and Alvarez have shared a headline, as McGregor once accused the Mexican champ of ‘cherry picking’ his opponents. Alvarez responded by poking at ‘Notorious” cardio history inside the Octagon, saying he ‘gasses out after two rounds.’

With UFC President Dana White now onboard for the potential boxing bout between Mayweather and McGregor, having offered Mayweather $25 million to make the fight happen, the bout has never been closer to a reality than it is today. McGregor and Mayweather continue to poke fun at one another through social media in attempt to hype the fight, only increasing the combat sports world’s interest in the feud.

McGregor has obtained his boxing license in the state of California and is attempting to do the same in Las Vegas, where Mayweather prefers to compete in all his bouts. If the Irish knockout artist is able to land a license to lace up the gloves in ‘Sin City’, things could get very interesting for the potential of this fight happening.

While neither McGregor or Mayweather are slated to fight anytime soon, Canelo has a date with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. live on pay-per-view (PPV) from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on May 6, 2017.

The fight boxing fans are dying to see is a bout between Mexican superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and reigning WBA, WBC, IBF and IBO middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin. The fight boxing fans are dying to see is a bout between Mexican superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and reigning WBA, WBC, IBF and IBO middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin. Apparently both sides have verbally agreed to fight in the fall of 2017, assuming both fighters are victorious in interim bouts.

Golovkin will meet Daniel Jacobs at Madison Square Garden on March 18, 2017, and it seems as if Alvarez has his next bout set as well.

“Canelo”, who holds the WBO light middleweight title, announced on his official Instagram account earlier today (Jan. 13, 2017) that he will be returning on Cinco de Mayo weekend (May 6, 2017) to face off with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on HBO pay-per-view (PPV) in a catchweight bout at 164.5 pounds.

Alvarez is coming off of a one-sided TKO victory over Liam Smith last September. “Canelo” has injured his hand in the bout, but he now appears to have returned to full health. Prior to that fight, he had scored stoppage victories over James Kirkland and Amir Khan as well as a decision victory over veteran Miguel Cotto.

Chavez Jr. fought at 168 pounds last month when he defeated Dominik Britsch via decision. Prior to that, he had fought three of his last four fights at the light heavyweight limit. Chavez Jr. has won four of his last five bouts.

While Chavez Jr. may not represent the biggest name in boxing, he is, like Alvarez, a well-known fighter amongst Mexican fans, and the two fighters should put on quite the show Cinco de Mayo weekend.

The location for the fight has yet to be determined, although the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, as well as the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas have been discusses as possibilities.

De La Hoya: Conor McGregor vs. Canelo Would Be Guaranteed Knockout

UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor raised the eyebrows of MMA fans and media last week when news arrived he had applied for and obtained a California boxing license.

Many thought it was merely a stunt used to draw publicity to ‘The Notorious’ while he takes a hiatus from actually fighting to welcome his first child into the world. The shadow of his long–rumored boxing match with lgendary champion Floyd Mayweather is still floating, but Mayeather’s camp and UFC President Dana White were both quick to squash that rumor by noting McGregor is under contract with the UFC.

However, there’s little doubt that any boxing match involving McGregor would be big business, and it looks like another boxing giant wants in on a piece of that pie. Speaking to FightHubTV (via Bloody Elbow) recently, fellow boxing great and current head man of Golden Boy Promotions Oscar De La Hoya teased a potential boxing bout involving McGregor and his current golden boy, Canelo Alvarez:

“If Conor is serious about fighting – first of all, would love to talk to him, and promote him. I mean, imagine Conor McGregor and Golden Boy coming together. But the only fight I would like to see, and this is the one that makes the most sense, it would be the most exciting, that would be a guaranteed knockout, is against Canelo Alvarez. And they’re in the same weight class. So it makes all the sense in the world. Imagine. 154. 160. It would be at 160 actually.”

Alvarez may be the outside name in boxing outside of Gennady Golovkin right now, and a bout between the two is often discussed but appears to have only a sliver of a chance of actually happening.

It’s probably more than McGregor vs. Mayweather regardless, and with MMA quickly eclipsing boxing as the most talked-about combat sport, it’s hardly a surprise to see De La Hoya getting in the mix with McGregor’s name on his list of targets.
