Canelo Alvarez and ‘GGG’ will face off for the third time of their respective careers on September 17th, in Las Vegas.

DAZN announced the much anticipated fight on Twitter. Reports were floating around that Alvarez was most likely leaning towards the third fight between the two all week.

Alvarez had said that the fight between the two is still personal and he doesn’t take the trash talk from ‘GGG’ lightly. The two have been in two very close fights back in 2017 and 2018. The first match saw the two fight to a draw and was such a close fight that could have gone either way.

Since the first fight was so close, it made the two have to run it back in a second fight. Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin faced off almost a year to the date after they went to war in September of 2017. The second time around, Alvarez was able to squeak out a majority decision win over Golovkin. Many fans disputed the outcome of both fights and claim that ‘GGG’ may have won both. Close fights always have people on both sides claiming their fighter nearly won the fight.

‘GGG’ out struck Alvarez in eight out of the twelve rounds in their second time facing off in the ring.

Canelo Alvarez is coming off His First loss in nine years

Alvarez lost to Dmitry Bivol, when he decided to try and go up in weightless and challenger for the (Super) Light Heavyweight Championship. Alvarez lost the fight by unanimous decision and didn’t look like the usual Alvarez fans have grown accustomed too in that bout.

The offer for a rematch with Bivol was on the table for Alvarez, but he decided to close the door on his trilogy with ‘GGG’.

Canelo Alvarez has been dealt his punishment for two failed drug tests for clenbuterol.

After his anticipated rematch with rival Gennady Golovkin was called off earlier this month, Alvarez received a six-month suspension from the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) at a hearing today.

Alvarez first tested positive for clenbuterol on February 17, and his six-month suspension is retroactive to that date, meaning he can fight again on August 17 at the earliest. The suspension was handed down as part of an adjudication agreement between executive director Bob Bennett, Alvarez and Alvarez’s team of lawyers according to MMA Fighting.

Alvarez’ team had previously claimed contaminated meat, which has been proven to be a source of trace amounts of clenbuterol in fighters in his native Mexico, was the source of his failed tests, but the commission deemed it a performance-enhancing drug failure nonetheless.

The low levels for which he tested for were consistent with prior contamination, Daniel Eichner, the director of SMRTL lab, which analyzed the samples, backed up that claim.

Now that Alvarez is suspended, Golovkin will now face Vanes Martirosyan on May 5 from the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

Boxing’s biggest fight just got called off.

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez was temporarily suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) on March 23 for testing positive for banned substance clenbuterol twice this February, and an official anti-doping complaint was filed against him by NSAC executive director Bob Bennett on March 29.

That put his May 5 rematch with Gennady Golvkin from Las Vegas in jeopardy, and now boxing fans have been forced to swallow the worst possible news.

Word arrived this afternoon (Tues., April 3, 2018) that the fight has been called off when Eric Gomez, CEO of Alvarez’ promotion company Golden Boy Productions, confirmed the news during a media conference call via Brian Campbell of CBS:

Alvarez’ team has denied any wrongdoing on their fighters’ behalf, instead citing trace amounts of clenbuterol in contaminated meat in his native Mexico where he’s been training. Clenbuterol has been found in tainted meats in Mexico and China, so much so that VADA has had a warning about the scenario for years.

However, it didn’t get Alvarez off of an anti-doping violation, and the boxing superstar will have his chance to plead his case in front of the NSAC on April 18. He faces a potential one-year suspension for a first-time offender, but that could be cut in half in the commission sides with him.

Then, and only then, will fight fans find out if the awaited rematch with Golovkin will happen anytime soon.

The latest development from the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) would suggest Canelo Alvarez’ anticipated May 5 rematch with Gennady Golovkin is in serious jeopardy.

News arrived today (Thurs., March 29, 2018) that NSAC executive director Bob Bennett filed an official anti-doping complaint against Alvarez after he tested positive for banned substance clenbuterol in two pre-fight drug screens.

The complaint revealed that Alvarez will face a suspension of nine to 24 months, although according to NAC regulation 467, section 34, paragraph 1(a), that could be reduced by up to 50 percent (via Yahoo’s Kevin Iole).

Alvarez is set to appear before the commission during their April 18 meeting, where he will be allowed to give a defense for his failures.

Alvarez was in Guadalajara, Mexico, at the time of his failed tests, and cited contaminated meat for the failure. Clenbuterol has been found in trace amounts in meat in several places including Mexico, and VADA has issued a warning about that exact scenario for years.

But the NSAC apparently wasn’t buying that story, at least for now, so Alvarez will most likely face a one-year suspension for his first-time offense, which is consistent with first-time offenders in Nevada. If he were to receive the 50 percent reduction, his suspension would potentially be reduced to six months, putting his earliest eligibility to return at August 18, 181 days after he failed the first test on February 17.

So the May 5 rematch – one of boxing’s most awaited current bouts – is now in serious jeopardy as the complaint against Alvarez detailed that, “Alvarez’s utilization, ingestion and/or consumption of Clenbuterol, whether intentional or not, constitutes an anti-doping violation.”

The complaint also listed that it is an athlete’s responsibility “to ensure that no prohibited substance enters his or her body…”

Golovkin’s team has insisted that they will take another fight at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on May 5 if Alvarez is unable to compete.

The highly anticipated rematch between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin is in some incredibly hot water.

News arrived this evening (Fri., March 23, 2018) that Alvarez had been temporarily suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) for two drug test failures for banned substance clenbuterol. NSAC executive director Bob Bennett confirmed the news to MMA Fighting after an initial report by the LA Times.

Alvarez will appear before the commission on April 10 to face potential punishment, putting his highly anticipated May 5 rematch with Golovkin from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas in serious jeopardy. In an odd scenario, Alvarez was not initially suspended when it was announced he had failed the first test for clenbuterol on March 5. The NSAC was investigating the case since then, however, and Bennett revealed that Alvarez had failed two tests on February 17 and February 20.

The Mexican superstar’s Golden Boy promoter said that the test was failed due to a trace amount that was, ‘consistent with meat contamination that has impacted dozens of athletes in Mexico over the last few years.’

It may sound far-fetched, but meat has consistently been tainted with clenbuterol in Mexico and China, to the point where the World Anti-Doping Agency has an official warning about it. Mexican UFC athletes Brandon Moreno and Augusto Montaño were cleared of possible USADA sanctions following positive tests for trace amounts of clenbuterol in their system that were aligned with the aforementioned meat contamination.

It is of note that the NSAC has suspended athletes for the substance in the past.

Alvarez has vehemently denied that he knowingly ingested any performance-enhancing drugs, even going as far as to offer to move his camp from his home of Mexico to the United States and take any tests required. Alvarez and Golovkin fought to an incredibly controversial draw in Las Vegas last year, pushing their rematch to the point of being one of the sweet science’s most anticipated match-ups.

Last night’s (Sat., March 3, 2018) UFC 222 from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, was the first time controversial combat sports judge Adelaide Byrd had judged since her laughable score at last September’s Gennady Golovkin vs. Canelo Alvarez boxing match, so it was hardly a surprise that the event featured some questionable split decisions in fights she was judging.

Three bouts she judged in total ended in split decisions, including a questionable 29-28 nod for women’s strawweight Ashley Yoder over Mackenzie Dern, and a 29-28 nod to Cody Stamann in his bantamweight match with Bryan Caraway, a score that was echoed by judge Sal D’Amato to give Stamann a win most media outlets had scored for Caraway.

The fact Byrd presided over the card was announced by Octagon commentator Jon Anik at the beginning of the Stamann vs. Caraway bout (where Anik said Canelo vs. Golvkin was in August 2016, for some reason), and it led to a hilarious exchange between Joe Rogan, Daniel Cormier, and Anik where they made fun of Byrd’s questionable past based on the Canelo vs. GGG decision. Anik: I can tell you boys, that one of the three judges for this fight is one Adalaide Byrd. First time judging since that controversial August 2016 decision in GGG vs. ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, so don’t shoot the messenger.

Rogan: We just both had a heart attack. Oh God, she was driving a Ferrari for that fight.

Daniel Cormier: (laughs) Oh my goodness.

Rogan: She’s a nice lady though.

Cormier: She’s a great lady. The other day I saw her at The Ultimate Fighter… (laughs) She’s a very nice lady, let’s just leave it at that.

Rogan: She’s a very nice person. So is my mom, but I wouldn’t want her judging any fights.

Cormier: (Laughs) Oh my goodness, somebody get Joe Rogan! (Laughs) Somebody get Joe Rogan!

Rogan: My mom would be like, “Oh Canelo is handsome! I’ll give him the round.”

(They all laugh)

Then the conversation continued on later in the bout when ‘DC’ hinted that leaving this particular bout in the hands of the judges may not be a good idea:

Cormier: Leaving an impression in the judges’ minds is especially important. Especially… with…

(They all laugh)

Rogan: Don’t say it! Don’t say it! (laughs) We’ve given that lady enough problems.

Rogan caught himself in the second exchange, but the cat was out of the bag after he suggested Byrd was ‘driving a Ferrari’ for her score in the Canelo-Golovkin bout, a statement implying some nefarious connections to her heavily criticized scorecard.

She’s still back judging high-level fights, however, and based on last night’s results, no fighter who lets a contest go to the scorecards is safe.
