For those wondering if Conor McGregor will ever fight in the octagon again after his lucrative boxing match with Floyd Mayweather Jr. on August 26, Dana White wants you to know he’s got a big one planned.

The UFC President, who’s become more well-known for telling the press statements that are soon proven false – or denying something that soon comes true – than anything else, recently discussed McGregor’s pending return with MMA Junkie’s John Morgan:

In the interview, White insisted that top-ranked lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson, who have seen a scheduled match-up fall apart three times now, will still have to fight at some point.

And apparently they’re picking Khabib to win despite his horrific track record of showing up to fight as of late, as White revealed McGregor wants Nurmagomedov in his native Russia in his next fight after Mayweather:

“You know what Conor told me? He said, ‘I want Khabib in Russia,’” White told MMAjunkie on Wednesday at UFC headquarters. “Isn’t he (expletive) awesome? He’s like, ‘I want Khabib, in Russia.’ He’s awesome. Conor McGregor is a (expletive) unicorn. There’s nothing like him. He’s working on boxing Floyd Mayweather and then he’s talking about fighting Khabib in Russia right after.”

There’s no set timeline for the two to fight, but White put a positive twist on the fact that Nurmagomedov was unable to show up to their scheduled UFC 209 meeting in March due to a failed weight cut, noting that keeping the lightweight division on standby would have been messier than it is now:

“Those guys (have) got to fight,” White said. “It would have seemed a lot worse if those two guys fought (at UFC 209), and they were all sitting around waiting. It didn’t happen. That fight still needs to happen. So this thing could time out perfectly.”

Perfectly’s a rather optimistic point of view, as Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson would have to go off without a hitch, probably sometime in the late fall due to Khabib’s religious obligations, and McGregor would then have to decide he’s willing to fight in Russia for his first-ever UFC title defense.

While it would no doubt be a huge bout that MMA fans would clamor to see, it’s far from set in stone that McGregor is even going to fight in the octagon again, and he’s often called the touted but inconsistent Dagestani grappler a “pullout merchant” for his constant struggle with injuries. There’s also the issue of Nate Diaz, who could certainly make a case for a lucrative third fight with “The Notorious” – this time for the belt.

But that’s predictably not going to stop White from gushing about his biggest star even though he seems to look for the biggest payday rather than ever defending his titles. White thinks his top draw is absolutely amazing, and that’s a problem that much of the UFC roster has claimed plagues the UFC in a major way as mid-to-lower-level fighters get thrown by the wayside with little promotion and low pay.

Clearly, that doesn’t matter as long as he has his beloved McGregor, however:

“Those are the kind of things that make that kid a (expletive) superstar,” White said. “I’ve got guys telling me, ‘I don’t want to (expletive) – I don’t want to fight this guy, and I don’t want to do this.’ (Conor says), ‘I want Floyd Mayweather then I want (expletive) Khabib in Russia.’ How do you not love him? How do you not love Conor McGregor? Amazing.”

With the combat sports world awaiting August 26’s massive Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather boxing fight, several questions remain as to just what will happen in the two-division UFC champ “Notorious’” professional boxing debut.

One of them, which might be somewhat ridiculous, is whether or not McGregor will resort to MMA maneuvers, which he’s already been banned from, after “Money” frustrates him with his elusive, stifling style of the sweet science. Dana White recently reassured fans and media this wouldn’t be the case because of the potential lawsuit Mayweather would level at him:

“There is no way that will happen. That is absolutely in the contract, No.1. No. 2, this is a boxing match under the rules of the Nevada State Athletic Commission. When you talk about a guy like Floyd Mayweather – the lawsuit if that ever happened … you all know how much Conor likes money. Conor would depart with a whole lot of money if that ever happened.”

But there’s a person close to the situation who believes the unfortunate scene could still unfold, and that’s Mayweather’s assistant trainer Nate Jones. He told Submission Radio (via MMA Junkie) that McGregor could get frustrated and break the rules:

“One way I can see the fight ending is Floyd outboxing him, beating the crap out of him,” Jones said. “Another way I’m going to be concerned about is when Floyd gets to a point where he frustrates him too much, McGregor’s going to do something crazy. That’s the only thing I’m worried about.”

Mayweather will be 40 years old come fight night, and Jones indeed acknowledged this, along with McGregor’s touted knockout power, could be a factor in the outcome. But he still stuck to the notion that the UFC superstar could be disqualified for using a move not allowed under the agreed-upon stipulations:

“I would be more concerned about this fight because Floyd’s a little older now. He’s 40 years old. McGregor has crazy weird power, and he’s got weird shots from weird angles. I’m worried about that. But for my prediction in the fight, is Floyd either confusing him and frustrating him and stopping him in the later rounds, or Floyd outboxing him, or (McGregor) doing something stupid and losing the fight. That’s my prediction.”

Some do agree that Mayweather’s age coupled with the fact that McGregor is in his physical prime could cause the most shocking upset in boxing history, something the early betting odds currently reflect compared to Mayweather’s recent match-ups. The undefeated legend has infinitely more experience in the squared circle, however, making this a fight that is justifiably skewed in Mayweather’s favor in a big way.

To suggest that Mayweather’s precise, surgical strategy, which has been described by boring by many a knockout-hungry onlooker, will coerce McGregor to abandon the rules of boxing to harm Mayweather with an MMA technique like a takedown or a kick is somewhat speculative at best, accusatory at worst.

It’s hard to trust White most of the time, because he’s said one thing and the opposite soon came true shortly after he did more times than we could count. Yet this time, he’s right about one thing, that McGregor loves money and most likely won’t want to risk the massively expensive and unnecessary suit that Mayweather’s team would levy at him.

Do you believe McGregor will be so frustrated by Mayweather that he’ll break the rules?

UFC president Dana White may be slightly biased, but he believes his lightweight champion will become the biggest sports star in history if he can pull off the unthinkable and knock Floyd Mayweather out.

While speaking at Cannes Lions over the weekend, White explained his thoughts on a possible McGregor victory now that the 12-round boxing match with Mayweather has been set in stone.

“Listen, if McGregor knocks him out he’ll be the biggest star in sports ever,” White said. “If Mayweather turns this thing into a track meet and runs away from him, whatever happens, I don’t know.

“I don’t know what the outcome or the answer is when this thing’s over, but what the hell, we’re going to give it a shot and see what happens.”

McGregor and Mayweather will finally step into the ring together under the Marquess of Queensberry Rules on August 26 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

The bout is expected to break numerous records, including live gate, pay per view, merchandise, and sponsorships.

While McGregor has never fought a professional boxing match in his fighting career, Mayweather will look to extend his unbeaten streak to 50-0 with a win over the brash Irishman.

White has been in an extremely small minority of people who are giving McGregor a chance.

Do you agree with White on this?

Boxing champ Andre Ward is one of the very few boxers claiming the recently-announced Mayweather vs. McGregor boxing bout is good for the time-honored sweet science.

Ward is currently the top pound-for-pound boxer in the world right now since Floyd Mayweather retired and is slated to rematch P4P No. 2 Sergey Kovalev tomorrow. Heading into the pivotal match-up, Ward discussed his thoughts on the hybrid boxer vs. mixed martial artist showdown with Fight Hub TV (via MMA Fighting):

“I think it’s good for boxing. I like it. I’m gonna watch it. I don’t really have an opinion about it in terms of a negative sense. It’s cool. It’s all good.

“I think if you don’t want to watch it, you don’t have to tune in. You don’t have to follow the build up. You can turn the channel or not read it. I’m not here to promote their fight but I think that the attention that all us fighters are getting – you know, we’re asked about it every time we do an interview from mainstream media – I don’t think that’s a bad thing. I think it can be good, just understand what you’re signing up for. Understand what it is.”

“I think it’s kind of cool that he’s going for 50 in a unique, different way like this instead of just fighting an average guy. And he’s getting paid to do it so you can’t knock that.”

So far, those in the boxing world have regarded the bout in a fairly negative light. Teddy Atlas, Kathy Duva and others have brushed off the significance of it, with some like Oscar De La Hoya going so far as to say it will hurt boxing’ stature.

Ward takes on Sergey Kovalev in a rematch of their first fight on Saturday June 17.

The hype train for August 26’s anticipated Conor MCGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather boxing match is understandably in full swing, and with that comes the sure-to-be-endless speculation and predictions from combat sports media members far and wide.

One such prediction came from longtime ESPN boxing analyst and TV show host Max Kellerman, who not surprisingly stated, as many have, that McGregor has no chance whatsoever during a recent edition of ESPN’s ‘First Take’:

“Let me tell you what’s going to happen. Conor McGregor will not land a single punch against Floyd Mayweather. Not one punch.”

While cGregor has obviously never competed in a professional boxing match, hasn’t looked the best in sparring, and is facing one of the best of all-time, it’s a bold prognostication to say he won’t land a single strike on the aging Mayweather. Former UFC heavyweight and “Fighter and The Kid” podcast co-host Brendan Schaub took umbrage to the statement, posting to his Instagram that he would bet Kellerman $100,000 that not only will McGregor land punches, but will also win multiple rounds versus “Money”:

It seems like a bold assessment from both sides, something that is no surprise considering Kellerman is a longtime boxing media member and Schaub is obviously biased towards the UFC and MMA.

The actual outcome is more likely to be in the middle of the two, if we’re to believe the early odds for the historic fight. McGregor will most likely a few shots early but get outlasted by the defensive counter-striking style of Mayweather, especially in the later rounds with both fighters wearing much bigger 10-ounce gloves.

This is still a fight, however, and anything can happen. Are you leaning towards believing Kellerman or Schaub more?

Now that the Mayweather vs. McGregor deal is done, there are hundreds of questions that won’t be answered until August 26.

One question that stands out regards what many fight fans see as an inevitability: what will happen to McGregor and the UFC if and their top draw loses?

Well, UFC President Dana White is confident that even a loss to one of the greatest boxers in history won’t tarnish MMA and the man at the top of its mountain.

“At the end of the day, these two guys wanted this fight, the fans wanted this fight, and Conor is a mixed martial artist going into a boxing match with arguably the greatest boxer of all time,” White said during a conference call following the fight announcement. “I don’t think it damages the brand or Conor McGregor at all, I think it actually elevates Conor McGregor. The fact that this kid who has so much to lose is willing to step in and is absolutely confident that he will win this fight, I think is one of the many reasons that people love Conor McGregor and win, lose or draw it will be one of the reasons that people continue to love Conor McGregor.”

Ever the promoter, White was realistic about the disparity in boxing skills and experience between Mayweather and McGregor, but stopped short of not giving the UFC’s first ever two-division champion a chance at pulling off the improbable upset.

“Listen, is he at the level of a Floyd Mayweather as far as boxing standards go?” White said. “No, but the kid, first of all, is a southpaw and people can argue one way or the other but Floyd, traditionally, if you want to say there’s ever been a kink in the armor with that kid, it’s with southpaws. And Conor McGregor is an absolute knockout artist. When he hits you, you go. So it’s part of the fun of this fight, is Conor McGregor, in a 12-round fight, gonna be able to touch Floyd Mayweather?”

While MMA and boxing pundits alike seem confident that Mayweather will win, the president of the UFC doesn’t necessarily see a loss for McGregor as a loss at all.

Of course, Dana White wouldn’t have helped to put the bout together if he felt the most likely outcome would destroy his sport and it’s biggest star.
