After last night’s revelation that Dana White had worked out Conor McGregor’s side of the deal and the follow-up news that McGregor had applied for a boxing license in Nevada, the mixed martial arts (MMA) universe is awash in the distinct possibility that the the infamous “Notorious” could actually be boxing Floyd Mayweather Jr.

If it actually does – and it’s far from being anything closely resembling a done deal – the majority of those familiar with combat sports still believe that Mayweather, a boxer whom many consider one of if not the best to ever compete, is going to wipe the floor with the UFC’s biggest star, who has no professional boxing experience.

One high-profile subscriber of the theory is UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier, who pulled no “Bones” about McGregor’s chances against the legendary pugilist in addition to any of the other rumored UFC vs. boxing bouts during today’s episode of UFC Tonight:

“He can actually go and fight Mayweather. He will lose. But the rest of these guys, they will get no money, and they will get slept.

“Look, James Toney fought in the UFC, and we had no problem showing the footage over and over again of James Toney getting beat by Randy Couture. These boxing promoters will constantly video of the heavyweight champion of the world getting slept by Anthony Joshua, or Jimi Manuwa, c’mon Jimi! Getting slept by David Haye.

These dudes will get slept, it’s going to be embarrassing, so no, it is not good for the UFC. Conor, hat’s off to you, make your money, but don’t get slept! Which might happen to ’em”

Cormier is currently set for his oft-scheduled (and oft-canceled) grudge match with former champion Jon Jones at July 29’s UFC 214, and as we’ve seen in the past, that fight is anything but a certainty to happen despite its high-profile nature. The current champion seems to be the heel in the eye of the fans, and perhaps that’s because he tells the facts how they are in a blunt manner, as he has with his recent back-and-forth with the embattled all-time legend.

And while he may be a public persona for the UFC as a co-host of UFC Tonight, Cormier told it like it is here with the cold truth that most if not all professional MMA fighters would stand little chance in the boxing ring against the sport’s top athletes, just like the top boxers would have no chance in the cage.

McGregor most likely isn’t concerned with that, however, as the possibility of an absolutely unparalleled payday is much more than enough to get past the probability that he may lose. That’s the current mindset of MMA’s biggest star, and he could be headed for a bout that does anything but make the UFC look good in any way.

But with big-money bouts few and far between in 2017, the promotion is looking for the biggest payday it can get. Is this one worth it?

On a weekend devoid of fights from the UFC, perhaps the biggest news in the MMA world was Conor McGregor welcoming son Conor Jr. into the world with longtime girlfriend Dee Devlin.

News broke yesterday that Conor Jr. came into the world at 8 pounds, 14 ounces according to his grandfather Tony McGregor.

And today, we’ve got some pictures of the new baby and parents. McGregor, who has not fought since his UFC 205 win over Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight crown because of Devlin’s pregnancy, posted one of his sleeping son and Devlin on his official Instagram account first:

Dee and Junior are doing great everyone! Thank you for all the kind words, I am one proud and blessed Daddy ??

McGregor then posted one of himself holding his new son:

We can land the left paw from anywhere. Who wants it.

With his son now happily welcomed, McGregor can supposedly get back into the cage (or boxing ring) after taking the time off to not put stress on Devlin during her pregnancy.

But even with that major milestone now in the rearview, McGregor’s fighting future is anything but certain as he continues to seek a boxing megafight with Floyd Mayweather Jr., even if Dana White said they just lost their date last night and talks have significantly died down in recent days.

With Conor Jr. safe in his mother’s arms, maybe they’ll start to pick back up gain. Or maybe, just maybe, McGregor could finally just decide to defend a UFC title.

UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor announced he planned to take the beginning of 2017 off to welcome his first child into the world after winning the 155-pound title from Eddie Alvarez at November 2016’s UFC 205, and that has now become a reality.

McGregor and longtime girlfriend Dee Devlin reportedly welcomed baby boy Conor Jack McGregor Jr. to the world according to McGregor’s father father Tony in a report to The Irish Mirror:

“There’s great news for the McGregors and the Devlins. Baby Conor Jack McGregor was delivered last night at 8pm in the Coombe Hospital.

“He came in at 8 pounds 14 ounces. The whole family are absolutely delighted.”

It’s great news for the two respective families involved, but it could cause some headaches for future generations of the fight game if Conor Jr. is anything like his brash trash-talking father.

Now that “The Notorious” has become a father for the first time, the fight world may finally find out what his next move is as he continues to chase a lucrative boing match with Floyd Mayweather, a bout which talks about have cooled in recent weeks.

He’ll always have a trilogy bout with Nate Diaz, and basically the collective whole of three UFC divisions are angling to get a fight with the UFC’s biggest golden ticket. For now, however, McGregor will sit back and welcome his first born into the world.

MMA may be moving along at a snail’s pace during a ho-hum start to 2017, and a lot of that has to do with lightweight champion Conor McGregor’s absence from the octagon as he chases a lucrative boxing match with Floyd Mayweather, a bout that is reportedly at a standstill itself.

Rumors recently arose from a Showtime Sports exec that talks of the bout had stalled because the UFC was worried their golden goose would promptly retire after securing a potential nine-figure payday against “Money,” but UFC President Dana White told TMZ that simply isn’t true in an interview this week:

“I saw a quote the other day from a guy from Showtime who said that I’m stalling the thing [Mayweather vs. McGregor] because I’m worried that McGregor will retire after this fight, which is completely false and not even close to being true.”

White suggested the combat sports world simply pump their brakes a bit and be patient, as a once-in-a-lifetime bout is difficult to navigate and will take a long time to make a reality:

“To get a deal like this done, this doesn’t happen in a couple months. It’s gonna be a tough deal to get done, if it gets done at all.”

Indeed a deal like that doesn’t get done in a couple months, as McGregor vs. Mayweather went from what seemed like a a laughing matter to something that looked like a near certainty just a couple months ago before talks died down.

But the UFC’s biggest star by far remains on the sidelines in a time where they need him the most, so it would serve White and his new bosses at WME-IIMG to figure something out before 2017 goes down as the worst year in promotional history. Do you have faith they’ll be able to turn things around?

Yesterday (Wed., May 3, 2017) Nate Diaz set the MMA world afire with his lengthy interview on a special episode of “The MMA Hour” with Ariel Helwani.

Diaz had much to say about a litany of topics from the new UFC owners to Conor McGregor’s long-rumored boxing match with Floyd Mayweather, but the most disappointing part of the entertaining segment, at least for his legions of fans, was when Diaz revealed he would be taking the rest of the year off to participate in his beloved triathlons, as the UFC hadn’t made him an offer high enough to come back.

He also detailed how he had initially accepted but ultimately turned down a bout with Tony Ferguson at July 8’s UFC 213, citing a number of reactions from fans online. Diaz understandably wants his rubber match with McGregor and the highly lucrative purse that comes with it, and it’s plain to see why from his point of view. He’s the only man to defeat McGregor in the octagon and did so by submission, and his one loss to “The Notorious” came in a close majority decision.

So it doesn’t make much sense for him to fight the surging Ferguson, who is a dangerous opponent who brings only a small piece of the hype and attention that a potentially record-setting bout with McGregor would. No matter what, the UFC needs stars for its big summer run, and it could make sense for them to just pay the piper and get Diaz in the octagon.

That doesn’t look like it’s happening, however. Should he have agreed to fight Ferguson?

UFC fan favorite Nate Diaz was spitting seething venom on a variety of topics during a special episode of “The MMA Hour” earlier today.

Diaz predictably aimed much of his attack at arch rival Conor McGregor, whose rumored boxing match with Diaz believes he should be involved in. And with no suitable fight on the table in his opinion, Diaz has no problem taking the rest of the year off as he awaits the most lucrative fight possible.

The Stockton superstar said he hasn’t talked to Dana White much, but apparently he has at least enough to receive a fight offer he originally accepted but turned down after some time to think it out:

“Yeah, I have — for July 8th. I wasn’t supposed to say that. And I gladly accepted it, and then it was gladly rejected because of circumstances. Sure, I will fight him, but under these circumstances, you know what I’m sayin’? Then I was ignored and the rumors went on. So I said, ‘why are the rumors still going if it’s not popping?’ And then I thought about it. Why am I going to do Conor McGregor’s fuckin’ work for him? No, fight each other motherfucker, and then you get a shot at the golden child right here, motherfucker. What are you going to do? You’re going to take time off to make $100 million to fight Mayweather and I’m going to do your dirty work for you?”

According to Diaz, he shouldn’t be made to fight “El Cucuy,” as that sending the surging contender down the ranks should be up to the lightweight champion whom Diaz submitted at March 2016’s UFC 196. So Diaz proclaimed that while he has no hard feelings towards Ferguson, he cited the most likely true dynamic that fans would be tuning in to watch him compete rather than Ferguson:

“They’re not stepping on my shoes without getting a bitch slap. I’m not mad at you Tony, but at the same time, you’re not motivating me. In this game it’s all about the money motherfucker. If it’s not about the money then what the fuck are you doing it for? I want my piece. They’re tuning in to watch me, not you, and that’s your fault.”

The proposition of Diaz vs. Ferguson arose when Audie Attar, McGregor and Ferguson’s shared manager, suggested Diaz should ‘earn’ a third fight with McGregor by defeating Ferguson. Diaz thinks this is a bit of playing one of his fighters against the other, something he doesn’t trust and does not enlist a manager because of:

“I ain’t got no manager. I represent myself. I got my homeboys around me. I don’t need no phony fucks around. Tony, Conor, Khabib and their manager, they’re all on the same team. How can you trust somebody that work with the enemy? I’m about this war lifestyle. I’m taking a year off with my brother.”

Diaz also said he wouldn’t engage in the current trend of ‘money fights,’ because he is his own ‘money fight’ by himself:

“I ain’t asking for no money fights because I am the money fight.”
