Jose Aldo has called out for a rematch against former UFC lightweight and featherweight champion Conor McGregor.

Their first fight went down at the UFC 194 pay-per-view event on December 12, 2015, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. In that fight, McGregor moved backward and connected with a left hook that landed on Aldo’s chin. As a result, McGregor won the fight by KO and was crowned the UFC featherweight champion.

This comes off the fact that Aldo is looking to wrap up his MMA career at the end of this year and wants all three fights to take place in Brazil. Following his latest win, Aldo pitched the idea of the rematch.

“If I have that opportunity at the division above, that way I won’t have to suffer through the weight cut. I think it would be a great fight,” Aldo said through an interpreter (H/T to Bloody Elbow). “I think in the first fight, we weren’t even (able to) show my work, and he connected a great punch. But if we have another opportunity, I think the story’s gonna be different.”

Aldo TKO’d Renato Moicano in the second-round of their co-headlining bout. This fight went down at the UFC on ESPN+ 2 show in Fortaleza, Brazil at Centro de Formação Olímpica do Nordeste.

Conor McGregor vs. Jose Aldo rematch would be booked by the UFC if it was up to the coach of the ex-UFC featherweight champion as he has called for the second bout in a recent interview.

This was the crowning of McGregor as the top star for the Las Vegas-based promotion. Up to this fight, McGregor was considered a rising contender as he was picking off top fighters in the featherweight division. Once this fight went down, McGregor put his name on top of not only the division but the promotion.

The First Fight

Their first fight went down at the UFC 194 pay-per-view event on December 12, 2015 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. In that fight, McGregor moved backward and connected with a left hook that landed on Aldo’s chin.

As a result, McGregor won the fight by KO and was crowned the UFC featherweight champion.

Conor McGregor vs. Jose Aldo Rematch

Aldo’s coach Andre Pederneiras stated that his fighter is looking for a big fight at lightweight and thinks it would be a perfect bout.

“We can try to angle for a rematch, because I really did think it was unfair and I think most people thought it was unfair that there wasn’t a rematch,” Pederneiras told MMAjunkie. “But, as far as Conor goes, he isn’t to blame. He may have turned it down. But the UFC had the power to tell him to fight. And they didn’t.”

McGregor is slated to challenge Khabib Nurmagomedov for the lightweight title at the UFC 229 pay-per-view event that takes place on October 6, 2018 at T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada.

“I think the first fight didn’t really represent what the fight could have been. Unfortunately for all of those who wanted to see it. So I’d choose Conor. Even though I don’t have anything against him.”

Over the course of just a few years, reigning UFC featherweight champion the “Notorious” Conor McGregor transcended the sport of mixed martial arts like none other (MMA), rising to the top of the fight game in rapid fashion.

It’s clear that McGregor is the UFC’s biggest star, but how did he get there?

Some would say his fighting skills, others would note his patented mic skills, as well as the promotional push he’s received.

As a fighter, the Irishman is often criticized. He’s coming off of a disappointing loss to Nate Diaz at last March’s UFC 196, and his ground game is constantly questioned, but the fact of the matter is that McGregor has indeed established himself as a legitimate fighter.

The “Notorious” one possesses a 7-1 Octagon record with six knockouts as well as a 20-3 overall professional record including 18 knockouts.

With that being said, however, McGregor’s mic skills are indeed second to none, and it could be argued that he wouldn’t be where he is without his gifted trash talk.

Let’s take a look back at some of his most memorable lines with eight of the best Conor McGregor quotes to date:

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor is in unfamiliar territory in terms of weight at UFC 196, but he has his eyes on Robbie Lawler’s prize….

From salads to steaks has been the story of Conor McGregor’s trip to 170 pounds, where he finds himself facing a new opponent in the form of Nate Diaz at UFC 196. The original headline bout was set between ‘The Notorious’ and Rafael dos Anjos for the Brazilian’s lightweight championship, but the fight got scrapped when RDA suffered a broken foot in training. Diaz was sewn in to the card on 12 days notice, in a situation that echoes the run up to UFC 189 featuring Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes.

So the pairing of the Stockton bad boy and the Irish fan favorite seems to be a match made in heaven, but the fight carries some serious risks for both men. For starters, Diaz being in on short notice had raised questions about his fitness, but the recent images of the younger Diaz bro training for a marathon brought back the legitimacy of this fight to an agreeable level.

Obviously it will take a lot more than being in shape for a fight against ‘The Notorious’ to be a successful one, but a performance like Diaz pulled off against top contender Michael Johnson would be a good starting point. We know the gameplan in the striking with Diaz, it’s stay on the outside but not give enough opportunity for McGregor to get a rhythm. Whether Diaz is able to implement that is another story. As far as the ground game goes, getting this one to the mat ASAP might be a better road to victory for Nate.

We’ve talked a lot about what’s next for McGregor after this fight, and he was asked that very question after his UFC 196 open workout last night (Wednesday March 2, 2016) in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Jose Aldo said he hasn’t seen his cut of the UFC PPV sales, but that wouldn’t make up for his devastating loss to Conor McGregor anyway…

Fighter pay has understandably been one of the hottest topics of discussion in MMA throughout 2015 and heading into 2016.

The debate was in no small part amplified by the UFC’s heavily criticized uniform sponsorship deal with Reebok, and many well known fighters have let their not-so-positive feelings about it be known. The most high-profile of those names has undoubtedly been former featherweight champion Jose Aldo, who’s criticized everything from the supposedly low pay for his training partners to the Reebok fight kits, to which he hilariously compared to those of children’s TV show ‘Power Rangers’.

Yet even though he was knocked out by archrival Conor McGregor in 13 seconds at December 12’s UFC 194, Aldo was expected to be headed for a huge payday apart from his $400,000 base salary thanks to his perceived pay-per-view (PPV) cut from the massively awaited event, which is expected to have drawn well north of 1 million buys.

But Aldo curiously hasn’t seen a dime of that money.

Speaking at the opening of his new hamburger restaurant in Brazil (via MMA Fighting), Aldo said that the thought of that money doesn’t make him feel better about the loss, partly because he hasn’t seen it anyway.

And as usual, he didn’t seem too happy with his employers. Jump to the next page to find out what the seemingly disgruntled champ had to say about his UFC 194 backend profits….
