From a quiet news week in the mixed martial arts community, to three days of madness. The headline news has come out of nowhere on this non-event week, as the promotion announced a number of huge fights, the biggest being the UFC 200 main event. Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz will rematch their UFC 196 welterweight showdown, staying at 170 pounds, in the main event of the July 9 milestone pay-per-view card. Also announced, and at first thought to be the co-main event, was the interim featherweight title bout.

Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar will duke it out for the junior strap, but UFC president Dana White later said this was not the co-main for UFC 200, and that exact fight is yet to be announced. So the speculation on the (likely) title fight that will fill the second place spot at the landmark PPV will continue, and overnight we’ve seen many social media reactions to the announcements so far for July 9. UFC 200 got it’s main event verified and announced last night (Wednesday March 30, 2016) as we learned tht Conor McGregor would be granted his rematch request with Nate Diaz. Of course we’d all known this for at least a week thanks to Ariel Helwani of MMAFighting.com, but you know how the promotion likes to break their own news, especially when it comes to huge PPV cards like UFC 200.

So the not surprising main event announcement was met with the revelation that Frankie Edgar and Jose Aldo would face off in a rematch of their UFC 156 featherweight title fight. Once again the bout will be a five round championship fight, but this time around it’s for the interim strap. As the news of their fight was announced just moments before the UFC 200 main event, many of us assumed it would be the co-main event of the evening.

Well, according to UFC president Dana White via The Star Phoenix, the second fiddle slot for the July 9 PPV is yet to be revealed:


Wow, it looks like this huge week of breaking news for the UFC is by no means over yet. Following the tradition of pay-per-view cards, aside from the fact a non-title welterweight bout is the main event, you can guess that a title fight will be targeted for the co-main event slot. UFC superstar Nate Diaz is currently all the rage in the mixed martial arts world. After defeating Conor McGregor at UFC 196, the Stockton bad boy is finally seeing the benefits of nine years hard work in the UFC’s lightweight and welterweight ranks. He stepped in to face McGregor on just 11 days notice, but made the most of his opportunity by battering ‘The Notorious’ on the fee and sinking in a tight rear naked choke for the tap in round two.

While talking with FOX Sports immediately after the fight, Diaz said he believed the UFC was ‘never going to give him a full camp’ against McGregor. Diaz also indicated they were trying to do the same with Frankie Edgar (who was injured when the call came in to replace Rafael dos Anjos), stating ‘They are trying to bring him to the top.’ Much like his older brother Nick, Nate Diaz does not buy in to the ‘BS’ as he’d put it.

The striking of Nate Diaz was severely overlooked in the lead up to his UFC 196 bout with Conor McGregor. It was widely predicted that the only way he’d get a win against a creative stand up fighter like the Irish superstar would be to go to the mat ASAP. As it turned out, Diaz’s prediction came true, and it was McGregor who initiated a ground fight when the punches started to sting.

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor has made an impact like very few before him, bringing waves of fans from his home nation of Ireland and also the much coveted casual market. Aside from Ronda Rousey, there are very few fighters in modern mixed martial arts whose fights are talked about by people who don’t even follow the sport. But one thing that’s clear about ‘The Notorious’ is that he has a very divided following. There are those that love to watch him talk trash outside the octagon and batter his opponents on fight night, and then there are legions that watch in the hopes he’ll catch a whooping himself.

As is the case with many heroes of the sport, McGregor is no stranger to hate, but his outspoken style, again almost identical to ‘Rowdy’ before UFC 193, has garnered the 145-pound champ an almost unprecedented amount of haters. So what are the reasons, and are they even justified? At the core of all this media frenzy is a man who fights for money, and at the same time provides entertainment, isn’t that the exact reason we follow combat sports?

Real life

So let’s look at this objectively, and we’ll provide evidence for both sides of the argument. So what do we know about Conor McGregor?

Well, first off let’s take a look at some of his activities outside the octagon. Here’s a brief snippet from an interview with ‘The Notorious,’ where he’s clearly choked up by talking about one of his fans who was terminally ill:


The young Irish boy by the name of Brendan Mcglone tragically passed away before being able to meet McGregor, whom he was a huge fan of. This shows a very human and empathetic side to the normally somewhat crude showman we see in the UFC. What’s not to admire about a man who’s charitable and caring side is so obviously more real than his antics on camera?

The truth on McGregor is that he grew up in a poor part of Ireland, and since making fame has bought his entire family new BMW’s and a house for his mother and father. He’s campaigned for numerous human rights groups, shown love to sick children, BUT…

There was a whole bunch of questions being asked in the lead up to UFC 196, as UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor prepared to take on Rafael dos Anjos, in an attempt to make UFC history. The lightweight belt was on the line, and the Irish superstar was all set to duke it out with his Brazilian rival, until the injury bug struck again. With ‘RDA’ out, Nate Diaz was drafted in and the welterweight main event was made official on just 11 days notice.

The consensus opinion was that Diaz would be out of shape, and essentially feature as the bitter half of a pay-per-view squash match. How wrong the consensus was, as the Stockton native battered and submitted McGregor in the second round of a thrilling affair. We asked the question before UFC 196, what happens if Nate Diaz beats Conor McGregor? The obvious answer was that ‘The Notorious’ would be sent packing back to featherweight, to finally defend his belt, once again we were very wrong.

Less than two weeks after their first fight had transpired was the shocking news that the two fierce rivals had agreed to fight again, this time at the milestone UFC 200 card. Again at 170 pounds, the announcement came as both confusing and frustrating to many hardcore fans of mixed martial arts and the UFC. With the featherweight division put on hold yet again, it was clear that the McGregor effect was still a massively controlling factor for the promotion. And yet again, we ask the question, what happens if Nate Diaz destroys Conor McGregor (again)?

Here’s our highly speculative outcomes:

A. McGregor 1

Back to featherweight

So the first and perhaps most obvious outcome of another loss to Nate Diaz would be that Conor McGregor would head back to the 145-pound division to defend his belt. The championship he won from Jose Aldo at UFC 194 is begging to be once again legitimized, but let’s not overlook how rarely it was defended back when ‘Scarface’ was on top. Of course with Aldo now a contender, and also Frankie Edgar screaming for a crack at the whip, it’s no wonder some fans are in disarray at the current booking of Diaz vs. McGregor 2.

So things could be a lot worse, and McGregor has not pulled out of a UFC fight yet.
