UFC Champ: Only Conor McGregor Can Throw The Lead Uppercut

One UFC champion has some high praise for Conor McGregor.

It’s no secret that Conor McGregor is one of the best strikers in the UFC.

“The Notorious One” has become well-known for his powerful left hand, which has been the downfall of many who challenge him inside the Octagon. The Irishman has shown brilliant technique and poise inside the cage over the past several years.

So much so, in fact, that one UFC champion believes that McGregor is the only man that can get away with throwing a lead uppercut combination. UFC heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier recently admitted he hates the combo.

This was shortly after Darren Till’s defeat to Tyron Woodley at UFC 228. Till only threw one shot the entire fight – a lead uppercut combination. Despite his dislike for the strike, Cormier said McGregor is the only combatant that can get away with throwing it (via Bloody Elbow):

“Darren Till threw one shot,” Cormier said. “When he finally decided to go — I’ve always hated this combination.

“The only person that should ever throw a lead uppercut, punch down the middle is Conor McGregor. He’s the only person that has successfully done that time and time again.

“Conor goes uppercut, straight left hand. Everybody else: stop! No I’m serious. Everybody else, stop! Chuck Liddell almost got killed against Rashad Evans because [he did] that. And now look at Darren Till.

“You can not throw that. It’s a flawed technique. Because when you do this, and you’re loading that counter-hand, when you’re loading that second punch… You are so exposed [to the counter].”

McGregor will get the chance to show off that combination very soon.

He’ll be returning at UFC 229 to challenge Khabib Nurmagomedov for the lightweight championship. It all goes down from the T-Mobile Arena on October 6th.

Cormier currently awaits the return of Brock Lesnar, who he’s believed to be making his first career heavyweight title defense against in early 2019.

Last night (Sun. September 16, 2018) Lesnar made his return to the professional wrestling juggernaut at its Hell In A Cell (HIAC) pay-per-view (PPV). He interrupted the main event for the Universal Championship between Roman Reigns and Braun Strowman.

Lesnar tore down the steel door of the structure and hit both men with his signature F5 finisher. Hours before the show several professional wrestling sites had reported spotting Lesnar in the same city as the show. It was speculated he’d be getting involved in some way, shape, or form.

This is an interesting move by Lesnar, who was believed to be finished with WWE for the time being last month. He dropped the WWE’s World Title to Reigns at the SummerSlam PPV. This was because “The Beast” is believed to be gearing up for a big UFC return.

He will likely challenge Daniel Cormier for the UFC heavyweight championship in early 2019. According to a report from Dave Meltzer of MMA Fighting, this plan remains the same. The only reason Lesnar appeared at the HIAC PPV last night was that he is setting up another major WWE program for an upcoming show in Saudi Arabia.

WWE and Saudi Arabia have a lucrative deal in place that will provide the country with regular shows over the course of 10 years. Lesnar will be making a return to Saudi Arabia on November 2nd to perform on the card, after appearing on the WWE’s first show this past April.

He is believed to be making “well into the seven figures” for his matches in Saudi Arabia.

Legendary but troubled former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones is awaiting the resolution of his failed USADA drug test in connection with his UFC 214 knockout victory over rival Daniel Cormier.

Jones has teased a pending return on social media quite often lately, making fans believe that a pending “Bones” fight could be on the horizon much sooner than his sordid history with performance-enhancing drugs would suggest.

That’s all speculation at this point, however, as Jones’ punishment could absolutely reach as high as four years because it’s his second offense. He’s also had repeated trouble with both cocaine and drinking and driving, making any return for “Bones” tentative speculation at the very best.

It won’t stop Jones from hoping for the best, of course, and in anticipation of his umpteenth comeback, he’s seemingly making more public appearances. Such was the case at this weekend’s Gatt Supplements expo in Las Vegas this weekend. There, Jones came face-to-face with an opponent he missed out on fighting when he was champion in two-time title contender Anthony “Rumble” Johnson:

Johnson retired from mixed martial arts after his second loss to Cormier at April 2017’s UFC 210. He’s since been seen becoming more focused on bodybuilding, and the results are not only jaw-dropping but also enough to prompt many to speculate that ‘Rumble’s’ been on some “supplements” of his own.

He isn’t being tested by USADA like Jones is, even if they haven’t exactly been knocking his door down this year. Regardless, the controversial great has an uncanny knack to come back from peril that would seemingly damn most other fighters. There was even a rumor that USADA had accepted a bribe to resolve “Bones’” case.

Let’s just hope we find out what will happen to Jones before a lengthy suspension period ends.

Rising UFC bantamweight “Sugar” Sean O’Malley is currently set to return from injury to face Jose Quinonez at October 6’s UFC 229.

He’s been out of action since March’s UFC 22, where he outlasted Andre Soukhamthath despite a badly injured foot. O’Malley has been one of the UFC’s most touted rising stars since his highly-publicized knockout on Dana White’s ‘Tuesday Night Contender Series’ in summer 2017.

Since then, the *********-focused O’Malley has made quite the name for himself. He’s carved out his own niche in the sport utilizing a very cannabis-friendly persona, evident by his full-on pimp getup on last night’s ‘UFC Tonight.’ O’Malley showed up with his trademark afro, shades, scarf, skinny jeans, and boots – but don’t let that fool you.

The kid can straight-up throw hands, and that became evident when he took to the show’s power-punching machine. There, O’Malley uncorked a shot so powerful that it surpassed UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley’s score and put him behind only heavyweights Derrick Lewis, Daniel Cormier, and Pat Barry.

Jon Jones Blasts ‘Unfixable’ Cobly Covington, Calls Him Extraordinary Liar

Jon Jones blasts interim welterweight champion, Colby Covington. Calls him extraordinary ‘unfixable’ liar.

Jones, 31, was in a talkative mood in a recent interview with RT Sport. The former two-time light heavyweight champ dished on everyone from Chael Sonnen to his greatest rival Daniel Cormier. But it was “Bones” take on his former college roommate Covington that that turned the most heads.

“Man, he is such an interesting character,” Jones said. “One thing I’ll say about him [is] that I wish people realized is how severe of a liar he is. He is an extraordinary liar. He reminds me a lot of Chael Sonnen, how he could just say one thing and tell the fans a bold-faced lie.”

These two have exchanged verbal jabs in the past. “Chaos” going so far as to call Jones out on alleged infidelity and steroid use.

“He lies about things that aren’t even really important. I can see you lying if it’s life or death, or if it’s really going to be a detriment to your career or something, but he just makes up lies. I really feel sorry for him to be that type of person. I really feel sorry for him. I don’t know if that is fixable. That’s what I think of him,” Jones added.

Despite their accusations, Jones wishes no ill will toward Covington. However, he doesn’t think they will be talking anytime soon.

“I don’t think I’d say something to him, he really isn’t… I don’t want to say that, I was going to say he’s not worth my time, but that could be a little arrogant,” Jones said.

Although Jones doesn’t dismiss Covington’s accomplishments, it’s going to take more than winning an interim championship and an endorsement from the president to earn a seat at the table with “Bones”.

“I have nothing to say to him. He has a lot more to prove in this sport. He’s got a lot more work to do to sit at the table with me. In the game right now – he is a child and I am a man, when you really think about it. Just when it comes to the things I’ve proven. He is not close to be on my level.”
