Georges St-Pierre believes former Octagon rival Dan Hardy will have the edge in his upcoming boxing match with Diego Sanchez.

Hardy will make his return to combat sports on 2 July after an almost ten-year absence. During that time, the 39-year-old has carved out a career as one of MMA’s most respected commentators and analysts but often expressed his desire to strap the gloves back on.

Hardy’s last professional UFC outing was a decision victory over Amir Sadollah in September 2012. Less than a year later, he was forced to end his 35-fight MMA career after he was diagnosed with a heart condition known as Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome.

Beginning in 2008, Hardy’s UFC stint spanned 10 fights and saw him challenge all-time great Georges St-Pierre for the welterweight title in 2010. Hardy lost the bout via unanimous decision, and thereafter went on a three-fight skid that included losses to Carlos Condit and Anthony Johnson.

St-Pierre Says Hardy’s Striking Will Give Him An Edge Against Sanchez

Hardy is certainly facing a number of challenges as he prepares for his boxing match with UFC Hall of Famer and Eagle FC super lightweight Sanchez. Not only is the Englishman a decade removed from professional competition, but he’ll be making his return in a different combat sport, against a recently battle-tested opponent.

But the man who bested Hardy for the UFC welterweight title all those years ago, Georges St-Pierre, believes the Englishman will go into the bout with Sanchez the favorite. In an interview with MMA News, St-Pierre said that Hardy’s striking will prove to be the difference.

“In boxing Diego Sanchez, I think he’s gonna do very well. I think he’s gonna have an edge in that. He’s a great striker,” said St-Pierre.

Also in Hardy’s favor is that he’ll face Sanchez before a home crowd in Manchester, England. The eight-round exhibition bout will feature on the undercard of British boxing legend Ricky Hatton, who will face Marco Antonio Barrera.

Is Georges St-Pierre right? Will Dan Hardy’s striking give him the edge against Diego Sanchez?

Dan Hardy Reveals July Exhibition Match Will Earn Him More Than Entire UFC Tenure

Former UFC welterweight contender and title challenger, Dan Hardy, has claimed that with just a single exhibition boxing match against Diego Sanchez this summer – he will have eclipsed what he earned in his entire Octagon tenure in terms of fight purses.

Hardy, who recently agreed to meet with fellow UFC alum and one-time lightweight title chaser, Sanchez in a summer exhibition boxing match in Manchester, most recently competed in a professional capacity on home soil at UFC Fight Night Nottingham 10 years ago, defeating Amir Sadollah with a unanimous decision win.

The former promotional color commentator and analyst had been campaigning for fights with the likes of Donald Cerrone and Nick Diaz in the UFC before cutting ties with the organization, as well as a boxing match against former welterweight titleholder, Tyron Woodley – and a kickboxing fight under the ONE Championship banner against John Wayne Parr.

Dan Hardy meets Diego Sanchez in a July 2. exhibition outing in Manchester, England

Penning terms on a eight round boxing match against Sanchez in July on the undercard of another high-profile exhibition bout between former world champions, Ricky Hatton and Marco Antonio Barrera, Hardy has claimed that he will eclipse his entire earnings in a four-year tenure with the promotion, in just one outing against Sanchez this summer.

“The honest trust is this is a good middle ground financially, because what we were being offered for MMA was pitiful, and what was being offered for bare-knuckle was three times what we were being offered for exhibition boxing,” Dan Hardy told MMA Fighting during a recent interview. “I could either fight him (Diego Sanchez) in MMA, and we’d have a to fight four of five times to make the same money, or I could fight him in bare-knuckle and do lots of really serious damage to him.”

“I’m fighting him in 16-ounce gloves over two minute rounds,” Dan Hardy explained. “Most likely, I’m going to stop him with shots to the body, and he’s going to remember going down to the canvas. I’ve got no interest in brutalizing Diego Sanchez, but we’re going to have a hard sparring match, and I’m going to try and hurt him as much as I can without doing permanent damage, and we’re both going to walk away with a lot of money in our pockets.”

“We’re not going to have to worry about the sh*t we got paid by the UFC,” Dan Hardy said. “So this is a big turning point for both of us, and I think he’s just as grateful for this opportunity as I am… You could add all my paychecks together from the UFC and I’m still making more doing this.”

Slumping to his second straight defeat back in March, Sanchez made his first outing under the Khabib Nurmagomedov-led, Eagle FC banner – dropping a unanimous decision loss to one-time interim UFC lightweight title challenger, Kevin Lee in a headlining bout.

Dan Hardy Predicts KO Over Diego Sanchez on July 2: “I’m Still Confident I’m Gonna Be Able to Stop Him Inside the Distance”

Former UFC veterans Dan Hardy and Diego Sanchez are set to collide in a boxing bout on July 2.

Dan Hardy has well documented that he is eager to return to combat sports competition in some way, with his last mixed martial arts bout coming in 2012.

After being released from the UFC, Hardy was in deep negotiations with ONE Championship and toyed with the idea of having a caged Muay Thai contest with John Wayne Parr. Dan Hardy also expressed interest in boxing Tyron Woodley. Still, this week it was announced the 39-year-old would be settling for Diego Sanchez on Ricky Hatton’s undercard.

Many anticipated a return from Hardy after the Englishman continued to tease fans. However, it came as a surprise to many that Sanchez would be his opponent. There were no surprises from Hardy, as he always knew he’d meet Sanchez, with the two men having been linked with one another for several years.

As tough and as durable as Sanchez is, the Nottingham born is extremely confident that he will dismantle him within the distance:

Dan Hardy on Why the Diego Sanchez Fight Materialized

“Diego and I have been on a bit of a collision course for a long while. I think it was back in like 2006 when we got a faceoff when we were fighting in Holland,” Hardy said on his YouTube channel. “It’s always been on the cards. I mean, we’ve always been in the same weight class. He was slightly ahead of me in his UFC career. So, like, as I signed with the UFC, I was watching him fight the likes of Clay Guida at the Pearl at the Palms. I’ve got some good memories of Diego’s fights. You know what you’re going to get with him. He’s an animal. He comes to scrap every time.

“This is big gloves boxing, this is 16-ounce gloves over eight rounds so we can beat the hell out of each other and have a lot of fun with it,” Hardy continued. “I’m still confident I’m gonna be able to stop him inside the distance, but it’s gonna be a bit more difficult with the 16-ounce gloves and with just one skillset, but this is a good place for me to start, get myself back in proper condition, proper fight shape and then we’ll see where we’ll go from there.

“I think there are other options with Diego, assuming I don’t beat him up too badly in this boxing match. We might be able to do MMA, or bare-knuckle, or something afterward. This is the first step in the rung of the ladder if that makes sense.”

July 2 will mark Hardy’s debut between the ropes. Fans continue to question why he is returning to compete at this stage of his career after being forced to retire all those years ago due to health issues.

Hardy ended his MMA career with an imposing (25-10) record, accumulating 12 knockouts in the process. Over the years, Sanchez had proven to be one of the wildest and grittiest fighters on the UFC roster. So, finishing the American will be no easy task, but one Hardy believes he will accomplish.

According to reports this Thursday evening, an exhibition boxing match between former UFC welterweight contenders, Dan Hardy, and Diego Sanchez has been penned for a July 2. boxing event – which is slated to feature an eight round exhibition boxing match between the returning, Ricky Hatton, and Marco Antonio Barrera. The event is scheduled to take place at the AO Arena in Manchester, England.

Dan Hardy will feature in active competition for the first time in 10 year

Nottingham favorite, Dan Hardy, who has been out of action since a hometown UFC victory against Amir Sadollah all the way back in September 2012, has been campaigning majorly for a return to competition in the last couple of years, welcoming links to clashes against the likes of Donald Cerrone, Nick Diaz, a boxing match against Tyron Woodley, and a kickboxing pairing with John Wayne Parr to name a few.

For Sanchez, the one-time UFC lightweight title challenger recently returned to active competition under the Khabib Nurmagomedov-led Eagle FC banner, suffering a back-and-forth unanimous decision loss against fellow Octagon alum, Kevin Lee back in March in a 165lb super lightweight outing. Per an initial report by MMA Fighting, the bout between Dan Hardy and Diego Sanchez is scheduled to take place over the course of eight, two minute rounds – with the pair expected to appear at a press conference on Sunday.

43-year-old Stockport veteran, Hatton will make his first venture into the squared circle since his November 2012 knockout loss against subsequent retirement against Vyacheslav Senchenko.

45-3 as a professional, Hatton’s sole other two losses came against both former world champions, Manny Pacquiao, and Floyd Mayweather – himself scoring notable career wins against the likes of Giuseppe Lauri, Tony Pep, Kostya Tszyu, Carlos Muassa, Luis Collazo, Juan Urango, Jose Luis Castillo, and Paulie Malignaggi.

Mexico City veteran, Barrera, 48, will make his first outing in a boxing ring since his February 2011 knockout win over Jose Arias.

The 67-7 professional, Barrera began his professional career all the way back in 1989, and is a former WBC WBO, and IBF featherweight champion – landing career wins over Agapito Sanchez, Jesse Benavides, Orlando Fernandez, Jose Luis Valbuena, Jesus Salud, ‘Prince’ Naseem Hamed, Erik Morales, Johnny Tapia, Kevin Kelley, and Rocky Juarez.
