Fedor Emelianenko

One of MMA’s all-time greats will make his return in October, when Fedor Emelianenko will compete at an unnamed Bellator event.

Ariel Helwani has reported that ‘The Last Emperor’s return will be made official by the promotion on Friday. An opponent and venue for the event have yet to be named. It will be Emelianenko’s first time competing since he claimed a victory over Rampage Jackson at Bellator 237 in December 2019.

Emelianenko will be 45 by the time he steps into the cage again. At this point in his career, he is no longer considered a true title contender, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t a number of interesting fights that await him in the cage. Most notably, recently released former UFC heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos has been rumored to be joining the Bellator ranks, and a fight between the two superstars would be one of the biggest the organization could put together. There were even reports earlier this year that the two were set to meet at an event in Russia.

Dos Santos fell on hard times to end his run in the UFC. He has lost his last 4 fights, dropping all of them by way of TKO. Still, his name holds value and he was in the UFC title picture as recently as June 2019. It’s not out of the realm of possibility that a change of scenery and a little luck could find him with a belt around his waist once more.

Whoever Emelianenko ends up fighting, it is sure to draw the attention of the entire MMA community. The former Pride heavyweight champion has still proven to be a draw, and has amassed a respectable 5-2 record since coming out of retirement in December 2015. His return means he obviously believes he still has something left in the tank, so let’s hope that his return will see him look in recent form.

Bellator MMA has a full weekend of mixed martial arts action ahead. The bouts will kick off with tomorrow’s Bellator 207 from Uncasville, Connecticut, and conclude with Saturday night’s Bellator 208 from Uniondale, New York. Yet at today’s Bellator 207 & 208 pre-fight press conference, the UFC 229 brawl was still the topic of discussion.

Many of the fighters including Russians Fedor Emelianenko and Alexander Shlemenko were asked about the brawl between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor’s camps. Fedor declined to comment on the matter. The Pride legend said he hadn’t watched the fight (via MMAJunkie) because he was preparing for Bellator 208:

“I cannot give you any comments, because I didn’t watch this fight,” Emelianenko said. “During my camp, I don’t watch any fights. I have heard about the brawl. But at the moment, I’m not going into details.”

Shlemenko voiced his support for his fellow countryman.

However, Bellator President Scott Coker was far from as forgiving in his response. He vehemently blasted the post-fight melee by calling it a ‘black eye’ and ’embarrassment for the sport’:

“To me, it’s a black eye for the industry. It’s up to all of us to pick it up and make sure something like that never happens again.

“But that was embarrassing moment for the sport, as far as I’m concerned.”

Its tough to argue with Coker’s point of view on this. Of course, he’s no stranger to in-cage post-fight brawls on high-profile shows. The infamous Jason ‘Mayhem’ Miller vs. Diaz brothers brawl at Strikeforce: Nashville back in the day gave him firsthand experience.

UFC President Dana White made light of the situation then. Perhaps he’s not laughing as much today. Or perhaps he’s simply laughing much more as the prospect of a rematch of the already record-breaking Khabib vs. McGregor looms overhead.

[ARCHIVES] Chael Sonnen Walks Back Fedor “Fixed” Fight Accusations

On This Day Three Years Ago…

[ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED OCTOBER 10, 2018, 9:57 PM]

Chael Sonnen has always been one of the most vocal figures in all of MMA. He has tended to be most vocal whenever the topic at hand was a future foe. Fedor Emelianenko was no different.

Soon after it materialized that Chael Sonnen would be facing Fedor in the Bellator Heavyweight Grand Prix semi-finals, Sonnen got a head start on trash talking Fedor, stating that Fedor participated in fixed fights.

However, Chael Sonnen also says that Fedor is the greatest heavyweight of all time. When asked to clarify what seems to be a mutually exclusive proposition: being the greatest of all time while participating in fixed fights, Sonnen was happy to clarify:

“I’ll clarify it: PRIDE was fixed,” Sonnen told MMAjunkie at the Bellator 208 open workouts “That’s not to say his fights were fixed. PRIDE was so long ago I can’t believe people are still talking about it. PRIDE had fixed fights, and that’s the way it goes. If you fix one fight your whole organization is ruined. I think it’s one of the reasons that they’re off TV and they’re out of business and they’re not doing it anymore.

“If Fedor had fixed fights – I’d have to go back and look. I don’t remember thinking Fedor was in fixed fights, I don’t remember thinking a number of those guys were in fixed fights. But they fixed fights. Period.”

One thing is for certain: Chael Sonnen has no plans to participate in any fixed fight Saturday night at Bellator 208. Sonnen has no plans of lying down for anyone in his battle with Fedor, quite the opposite:

“As soon as they say, ‘Go’ I’m going to come across the ring and I’m going to get in a fight,” Sonnen said. “I’m looking forward to it. I don’t know if I’ve ever looked forward to a fight before. I look forward to opportunities and matches and strategizing and planning and training, but the actual competitions, I am looking forward to grabbing a hold of him and seeing what happens.

“I want to see what this power is all about, this explosiveness is all about. I’ve been impressed by him watching him through my television set, but I want to be able to tell you first hand.”

Bellator 208 takes place this Saturday from the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, N.Y and will air on both the Paramount Network and DAZN.

What are your thoughts on these Chael Sonnen’s clarified comments?
