Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a very unforgiving game. Very few make it to the pinnacle, and even the brightest of stars don’t typically shine for too long.

Time and time again in this crazy sport, we’ve seen the cream of the crop, and even legends, suddenly fall from grace, essentially being smacked in the face by the harsh realities embodied by the fight game.

This isn’t to say that we haven’t seen excellent fighters reign supreme for years and end up on top or on a high note, because we most certainly have. But we have also unfortunately seen our fair share of fighters who weren’t lucky enough to experience a storybook ending. Fortunately for some, however, their careers aren’t over, and some have even bounced back already.

Let’s take a look at eight of the steepest downfalls in UFC history.

Of all the ways to lose in the UFC Octagon, one of the rarest and indeed most embarrassing is when a fighter somehow manages to knock themselves out.

Given all the preparation that goes into getting ready for a fight, from the grueling grind of cardio workouts, the endless rounds of sparring, the hours spent carefully crafting a gameplan for an opponent, and the sleepless nights spent envisioning all the possible ways the fight could play out, it must be a particularly bitter pill to swallow to know that, in the end, they themselves inadvertently proved to be their own worst enemies.

In this article we’ll take a look back at several classic examples of these freak occurrences in the UFC over the years, including instances where the fighter didn’t even make it to the octagon before delivering the knockout blow that would take them out of the fight.

Maynard will meet Fernando Bruno this July at The Ultimate Fighter 23 Finale. The bout was first reported by The Las Vegas Review-Journal.

After almost winning the UFC title in 2011, Maynard (11-5-1) has fallen on hard times. He has dropped each of his last four and is just 1-5-1 over his last seven.

Bruno (15-3) had his four-fight win streak snapped by Glaico Franca at UFC 190. The bout was his Octagon debut.

The sport of mixed martial arts (MMA) is dictated by skill, athleticism, experience, and the willingness to put it all on the line.

Throughout the years, countless combat crusaders have forged greatness inside of the cage by channeling these specific attributes. In turn, they’ve created unforgettable magic.

But as good as some of these contests have been, there are those that produce polar opposite results. There are fights that seem to shrink the creativity of the sport itself, offering little to cheer and even less to be impressed with.

In many cases, both fighters are to blame. Whether due to cancelling fighting styles or hesitant trigger pulling, their matchups have failed miserably. As for the other group of terrible performances, those manifest from the actions (or lack thereof) of one, and only one, party involved.

Either way, these atrocious MMA contests should be swept under the rug until the end of time. Because no one is going to miss the worst of the worst.

Here are the 10 poorest fights in the history of the sport.

Just Because, Here’s Nate Diaz Beating the Brakes Off Gray Maynard [VIDEO]

(Despite Gray’s best efforts to convince him, Nate Diaz simply wasn’t having any of his “I’m just looking for where I parked my car” defense. via Getty)

Having dropped 3 out of his last 4 fights and not competed in over a year, Nate Diaz will return to the octagon this Saturday to take on rising contender Michael Johnson in the co-co main event of UFC on FOX 17. If the photos circulating the web are any indication, it looks like Diaz is finally starting to take this sh*t seriously, which is a good thing, because when he does, you get results like the ones above.

It may not have been the trilogy fight that any of us were asking for, but Diaz’s performance against Gray Maynard at the TUF 18 Finale in November of 2013 was easily one of his greatest to date — an absolutely savage display of the Diaz’s “punches in bunches” style of boxing and his quickest UFC finish to boot. So to celebrate the arrival of UberDiaz to the UFC’s graces, let’s relive the night he turned a former title challenger in a mumbling, stumbling monster from an Abbott & Costello movie.
