Fighters handle losses in different ways. Some come back better than ever as they learned from a loss or they come back with doubts.

A UFC commentator is questioning former UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo who has now lost two of his last three bouts. Aldo had an unprecedented run of dominance that saw him remain undefeated for a decade and defend the title nine times. Some people are questioning if he is done or if his heart not in it anymore.

Aldo does have his next fight lined up as he will have a rematch with Ricardo Lamas at UFC Winnipeg on December 16. If you recall, Aldo won their first fight by unanimous decision.

This will also mark the first time that Aldo has fought on free TV since 2010 and his first three-round fight since 2009. He is coming off a loss to Max Holloway, and now, Kenny Florian is wondering what Aldo will look like in the upcoming fight.

Florian responded to a question from Jon Anik about “what version of Aldo” they would see at UFC Winnipeg during the most recent edition of The Anik & Florian Podcast.

“That’s the big question for me because although he was winning the majority of that fight against Max Holloway, early on especially, as the fight went on it seemed like it was the Jose Aldo that kind of loses interest in the fight,” Florian said (transcript courtesy of MMA Fighting). “It seemed like maybe he was a little bit bored or didn’t want to work as hard as he normally does during the fight. He didn’t have that same kind of pep in his step and Holloway just took it to him, kept pressuring him backwards and Holloway just broke him mentally and then took him out with skill. It was a beautiful thing to watch.”

Holloway stopped Aldo in the third with a barrage of strikes. This marked Aldo’s third career loss and only his second in the UFC, the other being his embarrassing 13 second knockout to UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor.

It should be noted that Aldo rebounded from that loss by beating Frankie Edgar in one of the best performances of his career. However, Florian says that this one is a different animal and the way Aldo looks against Lamas will inform fans if Aldo’s best days are behind him or not.

“For Aldo, this is an interesting fight to see, are you still motivated to fight? Are you still out there to win and put out your best performance? Especially against a guy he already beat, we’re gonna find out pretty quickly what Jose Aldo is all about and if he truly wants to get back to the top of this division.”

Former UFC middleweight champion Luke Rockhold returned to action at Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 116 in the main event against David Branch. Rockhold had to overcome a challenge as he was rocked in the first round. He pushed through it and was able to finish Branch by TKO in the second round with strikes from the mount.

This marked Rockhold’s first fight since losing the middleweight title over a year ago when Michael Bisping knocked him out in the first round. The former UFC champion failed to impress the fans with his technique.

Although Rockhold was the favorite in the eyes of oddsmakers going into the fight, Rockhold was hurt by Branch’s strikes several times in the first round.

Former UFC fighter and now analyst Kenny Florian talked about Rockhold’s striking struggles on the most recent edition of his Anik and Florian podcast. He stated that Bisping has “set a blueprint” on how to beat Rockhold.

“If you lost that fight to Michael Bisping, you have to be looking at not the fact that you took him lightly, but the technical errors you made in that fight,” said Florian (transcript courtesy of MMA Fighting). “He’s done this throughout his career and now people are onto it. Michael Bisping has set a blueprint on how to beat Luke Rockhold and he didn’t address the issue.

“[If I’m Rockhold], I’ve got to keep my hands up. If I am hitting that right hook, I’ve got to pivot or do something to make sure I don’t get hit again because he’s moving straight back and he’s a little bit lazy with that lead right hand which is something I used to do so I know all about that. I think he will address it eventually and it will make him a much better fighter.”

As seen in his latest fight, Rockhold didn’t end up needing to address his defensive liabilities because he was able to secure a takedown in the second round and demolished Branch quickly from there. Florian was critical of the former UFC champion’s strikes, but also praised him for his grappling.

“I think that Rockhold is tremendous on the ground; the way he places his body distribution, his knowledge of position is phenomenal. David Branch is a Renzo Gracie black belt . . . David Branch is very good, and Rockhold made it look pretty easy on the mat and I think a lot of was from Branch being mentally broken but also a great deal of it was the skill on the ground from Luke Rockhold.”

“I think a fight against Yoel Romero. If everything plays out the way it should, let’s say Michael Bisping goes on to defend the belt, he gets that next shot against Whittaker, then [Rockhold] fights someone like Romero. I think that’s something that might make sense.”

Deciding the right time to retire is always tough for a professional MMA fighter, but some don’t even get to make that choice, with serious injuries and ailments leaving them with no option but to hang up their gloves for good.

In this article, we’ll look at 10 stars whose time in the sport ended prematurely while they were still in the prime years of their career, and find out what became of them afterward.

Genki Sudo

Genki Sudo is fondly remembered for his remarkable fight entrances while fighting in Japan that were akin to mini-concerts with elaborate costumes, carefully choreographed dance routines and pyrotechnics.

He was also one of Japan’s best fighters, competing for the likes of the UFC, K-1, Pancrase, Rings and Heroes, and claiming victories over the likes of Nate Marquardt, ‘Kid’ Yamamoto, Mike Brown, Ramon Dekkers, Hiroyuki Takaya and Royler Gracie over the course of his 16-4-1 career.

However, in 2006 after a first-round triangle choke submission win over Damacio Page at the K-1 Premium Dynamite!! Event, Sudo delivered the shock news that he was retiring from the sport with immediate effect.

It transpired that Sudo had been suffering from a serious recurring neck injury that had left doctors fearing that he might suffer paralysis if he continued fighting.

After retiring, Sudo accepted a job as the manager of the Takushoku University’s wrestling team, while he’d also go on to appear in several movies and has written dozens of books.

Sudo also formed the music and dance band World Order, who have released several albums, performed around the world, been featured on numerous TV shows and have a YouTube channel with close to 100 million views.

Sudo retired from being the lead singer in the band back in 2015 but has remained involved as the director and producer for the group.

Former UFC title challenger and longtime color commentator Kenny Florian may have retired from MMA back in 2011, but the Ultimate Fighter season one veteran has continued to compete at jiu-jitsu tournaments ever since.

Florian took on Vitor Ribeiro at the Abu Dhabi World Championship over the weekend, and the result was not in the former UFC fighters’ favor.

“Shaolin” Ribeiro managed to choke the 40-year-old with a clock choke after a spirited effort by Florian. The Brazilian used his right hip to control the former UFC contender, and ultimately used his forearm to choke Florian’s throat after nearly five minutes of action.

The choke was so slick and quickly applied that many in attendance and those watching  via stream were unaware that Florian had been choked unconscious. Prior to the choke, Florian managed to stifle the Brazilian with an effective De La Riva guard and the match was indeed a close one up until the finish.

Ribeiro himself competed in MMA as well, and has not fought professionally since a 2010 loss to Justin Wilcox under the Strikeforce banner. The Brazilian compiled a 20-5 record in mixed martial arts, with 14 of those victories coming by way of submission or (technical) knockout.

K-Flo retired from the sport after a tough decision loss to then-undisputed featherweight champion Jose Aldo back at UFC 136. Florian has remained a popular figure within the promotion and frequently acts as color commentator during UFC events on FOX and FS1.

“Shaolin” has also retired from active competition in mixed martial arts, and runs his own Jiu-Jitsu school in New York City.
