When former UFC champion Pat Miletich showed up to fulfill his duties as a Strikeforce commentator at last Friday’s Challengers event in Stockton, Calif., he became part of a mini-reunion that he hadn’t planned on when he first took the job, he told Ariel Helwani on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour.

The event marked the first time a Strikeforce show had been run under the Zuffa banner since the organization was purchased by the UFC’s parent company in March, and as a result Miletich was back in the same arena with his former employers, this time in a very different role.

Miletich said he had “conversations, but not meetings” with Zuffa officials before the event, and while he was pleased with how things went, he admitted that he was not without reservations when he first heard the news of the monumental sale.

Serious, thought-provoking journalist Ben Fowlkes has a new piece out on Thursday in his continuing “The Truth About …” series over at MMA Fighting.com. This time Old Dad turns his steely, deadpan gaze on the long-term physical cost professional fighters must pay in order to live their dreams. The consensus from the athletes interviewed here seems to be, “Yeah, we know we’ll all be crippled or crazy someday, but it’s worth it. Sort of.” While many of the lasting effects of MMA competition may not yet even fully be known (since it’s such a comparatively young sport), credit Fowlkes for also getting comment from high-profile fight doc Johnny Benjamin, who says some interesting things about the risks involved in fighting, the need for comprehensive health coverage and – gasp! – maybe even a fighter’s union.

First though, who better to ask about his own mortality than a fighter you know is going to give it to you straight, or at least pop-off in a fairly entertaining way? So, what do you think about your future, Jason “Mayhem” Miller

For 15 years, Frank Shamrock suffered through the bumps, bruises, and breaks that come along with being a pro fighter, and he never had to wonder whether it was worth it.

Not until one afternoon when he was on his living room floor, trying to help his baby daughter learn to walk. A sudden back spasm struck him – one of many in a career plagued with lower back problems – and briefly paralyzed him on the floor.

“My daughter was around one [year old] at the time, so she didn’t know what was going on,” Shamrock said. “But I was like, I can’t even get up to help her, so I’m not sure how much more of this I should be doing. That’s about when I decided to stop.”

In 1995 Pat Miletich had one long-term goal: getting into the UFC. His short-term goal? To make at least enough money so that he didn’t starve in the meantime. Something called the “Battle of the Masters” could help him achieve both, or so he hoped.

Battle of the Masters was a one-night, eight-man, no-holds-barred (with the exception of biting and eye-gouging) fighting tournament at St. Andrew’s Gym in Chicago.

It was also winner-take-all. The prize for second place was little more than a pat on the back and a free bag of ice for your swollen face.

“I needed the money worse than any of those guys,” Miletich says now. “I don’t think they knew what they were getting into.”

Pat Miletich is the best broadcaster in mixed martial arts at recognizing the action in the cage and explaining it in a way that’s accessible to fans. There’s no one as good as Miletich, a former UFC champ, at taking his experience as a fighter and applying it as a broadcaster.

That’s why it’s so disappointing that Miletich does so much to destroy his own credibility by shilling for the Strikeforce product, offering blatantly dishonest analysis designed to make Strikeforce fights and fighters sound better than they are.

Miletich’s technical analysis was on display Friday night on the Strikeforce Challengers broadcast on Showtime, at least when there was good action in the cage for Miletich to analyze. Unfortunately, the rest of the time, Miletich overstated the quality of the fights and the fighters.
