Mixed martial arts is an ever growing sport, and has evolved massively since the early days circa the 1990’s. With the introduction of the internet and social media, promotions like the UFC have learnt to harness the power of the web to help expand their product to never before seen levels of success. But with this widespread use of the internet comes a freedom of speech, a freedom that some abuse to often criminal extents. With their identity safely hidden behind a generic username, the keyboard warriors can be extremely spiteful, especially in MMA.

Two prime examples of when the internet was used to bash UFC fighters recently? Ronda Rousey and Conor McGregor. After experiencing their first UFC losses, the two top level stars were also served with a barrage of insulting memes and comments from internet tough guys. It seems that in mixed martial arts, more so than in any other genre, the fans can be extremely unforgiving. Of course you can argue that the UFC itself put these hard feelings in the back of the fan’s minds with their relentless promotion of ‘Rowdy’ and ‘The Notorious,’ but it still doesn’t justify the hate they received.

Two legends of the sport in Mauricio Shogun Rua and Anderson Silva have heard enough, and they blasted the keyboard warriors in recent interviews. Here was Rua’s take on the trolls, as per Combate and translated by BloodyElbow:

“It’s the price you pay when the sport starts to grow. There’s more criticism, more people bugging you. I’m going to give you a pornographic example. I don’t want to generalize, because only a few fans do that.  Some people feel good when they go on the internet to criticize. They are like a virgin guy who watches porn all his life and thinks he knows everything about boning, but never had sex. It’s the same thing. Most fans support me. When someone is your fan, they like you as a person and an athlete. Brazilian are fans of results, though. This example goes to that small amount of fans.  The virgin who thinks he knows how to bone.  They are keyboard warriors.”

So what did former UFC middleweight Anderson Silva make of the criticism he’s received lately?

Shogun Rua vs. Corey Anderson Scheduled For UFC 198 In Brazil

Fan favorite MMA legend ‘Shogun’ Rua may have withdrawn from his anticipated light heavyweight showdown with Rashad Evans at April 16’s UFC on FOX 19 due to a lingering knee injury from wars past, but it appears that the former UFC and Pride champ will return to the Octagon sooner than expected.

This evening a report surfaced from MMA Fighting stating that Rua would take on rising 26-year-old prospect Corey Anderson at May 14’s UFC 198 from his hometown of Curitiba, Brazil. The bout has since been confirmed, and will join an already stacked main card featuring the awaited heavyweight title bout between Fabricio Werdum and Stipe Miocic.

‘Shogun’ is understandably regarded as one of the finest 205-pound fighters in MMA history, but has fallen on mixed results lately following endless slugfests against the elite fighters in the world. Rua most recently got back into the win column with a decision victory over Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in UFC 190’s “Fight of the Night” last August, but before that win he had dropped four out of five contests with three stoppage losses.

Rua returns to his hometown, where he won his two first MMA contests several years ago.

He’s still ranked in the Top 10 of the extremely shallow UFC light heavyweight division, however, and he’ll look to regain momentum against a very tough challenge in one of the division’s few young prospects in Anderson. ‘Beastin’ 25/8′ has won three straight fights after getting knocked out by Gian Villante in April 2015, most recently outlasting veteran Tom Lawlor by unanimous decision at UFC 196 after doing the same to Fabio Maldonado and Jan Blachowicz.

The TUF 19 light heavyweight winner will seek what would rank as by far his highest profile win over ‘Shogun.’

In other action, at UFC 198, top Brazilian fighters Ronaldo Souza and Vitor Belfort will face off in the co-main event, top-ranked Brazilian welterweight Demian Maia will face the gritty Matt Brown, and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira will meet Patrick Cummins.

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua will make his return about a month after originally planned, taking on Corey Anderson at UFC 198.

The light heavyweight contest has been added to the May 14 event that features heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum vs. Stipe Miocic.

Rua (23-10) was expected to face Rashad Evans in April, but a knee injury caused his removal. He was replaced by Glover Teixeira in the contest.

The Brazilian is coming off a much-needed victory over Antonio Rogerio Nogueira last August, his first win since 2013. Rua is 2-4 over his last six.

Anderson (8-1) was a heavyweight winner on The Ultimate Fighter and pushed his win streak to three in a row with a controversial decision vs. Tom Lawlor earlier this month. He is 5-1 over his UFC career, losing only to Gian Villante.

Shogun Rua Planned To Fight Until UFC Cancelled The Bout

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua was still going to push through and compete next month against Rashad Evans before the promotion pulled him out.

Rua injured his knee, according to long-time coach Rafael Cordeiro in an interview with MMAFighting.com, but the plan was to still face Evans at UFC on FOX 19. The UFC went ahead and replaced Rua with Glover Teixeira for the co-main event fight.

“Shogun had a knee injury for a while, and felt it again training jiu-jitsu,” Cordeiro said. “He went to the UFC doctor to check and continued training, but the UFC contacted him and cancelled the fight. Shogun said he would still fight despite the injury, but the UFC called and decided to cancel.

“That came directly from Lorenzo (Fertitta). Lorenzo saw the exams, saw it was an old injury, and the UFC decided to remove him from the fight. He’s out of this one.”

Rua (23-10) was hoping to build upon his August victory over Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in a meeting with Evans five-years in the making. When he held the title, the Brazilian was to defend it vs. “Suga,” but an injury knocked the challenger out.

At that time, Jon Jones stepped in for Evans and finished Rua in the third round. Since, the former PRIDE middleweight champion has gone just 4-6, including knockout losses to Ovince Saint Preux and Dan Henderson.

In regards to a potential Rua fight on the upcoming UFC 198 card also slated for Brazil, Cordeiro said that will be up to the UFC to “determine Shogun’s return.”

“He’s physically prepared for a fight,” he said, “excluding this old knee injury.”

The bout’s referee stopped some of these fights mercifully, a participant’s corner stopped some, and some went to a decision, but ultimately they all featured one-sided results

To be clear, we aren’t talking about one-punch or kick knockouts; those are a defined subset of a different sort. These bouts are just the most devastatingly one-sided contests in MMA history regardless of if they ended with a single knockout blow or not, and the magnitude of the fight was taken into account for judging.

They also not surprisingly feature some of the greatest fighters who’ve truly helped shape thee polished MMA picture we enjoy today.

Without further ado, let’s take a look at the 10 worst beatdowns in MMA history.
